Regulation of Class II Bacteriocin Production by Cell-Cell Signaling

  • Production of ribosomally synthesized antimicrobial peptides usually referred to as bacteriocins is an inducible trait in several gram positive bacteria, particularly in those belonging to the group of lactic acid bacteria. In many of these organisms, production of bacteriocins is inducible and induction requires secretion and extracellular accumulation of peptides that act as chemical messengers and trigger bacteriocin production. These inducer peptides are often referred to as autoinducers and are believed to permit a quorum sensing-based regulation of bacteriocin production. Notably, the peptides acting as autoinducers are dedicated peptides with or without antimicrobial activity or the bacteriocins themselves. The autoinducer-dependent induction of bacteriocin production requires histidine protein kinases and response regulator proteins of two-component signal transduction systems. The current working model for the regulation of class II bacteriocin production in lactic acid bacteria and the most relevant direct and indirect pieces of evidence supporting the model are discussed in this minireview.

  • Tyrosinase transcript In the blood Is known as the marker of malignant melanoma and it has been often determined by using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCA) . However, after the PCR process, the quantification of amplified CDMA by the gel electrophoresis is not reliable and time-consuming. for this reason, we tried to quantify the PCR product using a cuvette-type biosensor, where the oligonucleotide probe was immobilized on the cuvette surface and the single strand CDMA, the denatured PCH product, was then hybridized onto the immobilized probe to give a response signal. The response was Immediate and takes 15 min to obtain a stable signal. The biosensor was much more sensitive comparing to the gel electrophoresis method. The quantification of PCR product using a cuvette-type biosensor was feasible and rapid.

  • Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) has been chosen as a model species for the study of hotomorphogenesis. The aurea (au) and yellow-green-2 (yg-2) mutants which are severely photochrome deficient appear to be phytochrome chromophore mutants. Mutants modified with respect to specific members of the phytochrome gene family: the far-red light-insensitive mutant (fri, for phytochrome A) and the temporarily red light-insensitive mutant (tri, for phytochrome B1) have been identified. Mutants that exhibit an exaggerated phytochrome response are putative transduction-chain mutants affecting an amplification step in phytochrome signal transduction. These mutants are being used to understand the complexities of juvenile anthocyanin in the hypocotyl during seedling de-etiolation.

Non-contact damage monitoring technique for FRP laminates using guided waves

  • A non-contact, in-situ and non-invasive technique for health monitoring of submerged fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) laminates has been developed using ultrasonic guided waves. A pair of mobile transducers at specific angles of incidence to the submerged FRP specimen was used to excite Lamb wave modes. Lamb wave modes were used for comprehensive inspection of various types of manufacturing defects like air gaps and missing epoxy, introduced during manufacturing of FRP using Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Molding (VARIM). Further service induced damages like notches and surface defects were also studied and evaluated using guided waves. Quantitative evaluation of transmitted ultrasonic signal in defect ridden FRPs $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ healthy signal has been used to relate the extent of damage in FRPs. The developed technique has the potential to develop into a quick, real time health monitoring tool for judging the service worthiness of FRPs.

  • A development of surface acoustic wave gas sensor to detecting volatile gas has been observed by monitoring output signal as function of time onto the network analyzer. The SAW sensor with a center frequency of 200MHz was fabricated on $42^{\circ}$ S-T Quartz substrates. Using the gas chromatography column has been selectivity. Experimental results, which show the phase change of output signal under the absorption of volatile gas onto sensors, were presented. The proposed sensor has the properties of high sensitivity compare to the conventional SAW gas sensor and chemical selectivity. Thus, it is thought these results are applicable for use in sensor array of an high performance electronic nose system.

Dual roles of estrogen metabolism in mammary carcinogenesis

  • A female hormone, estrogen, is linked to breast cancer incidence. Estrogens undergo phase I and II metabolism by which they are biotransformed into genotoxic catechol estrogen metabolites and conjugate metabolites are produced for excretion or accumulation. The molecular mechanisms underlying estrogen-mediated mammary carcinogenesis remain unclear. Cell proliferation through activation of estrogen receptor (ER) by its agonist ligands and is clearly considered as one of carcinogenic mechanisms. Recent studies have proposed that reactive oxygen species generated from estrogen or estrogen metabolites are attributed to genotoxic effects and signal transduction through influencing redox sensitive transcription factors resulting in cell transformation, cell cycle, migration, and invasion of the breast cancer. Conjuguation metabolic pathway is thought to protect cells from genotoxic and cytotoxic effects by catechol estrogen metabolites. However, methoxylated catechol estrogens have been shown to induce ER-mediated signaling pathways, implying that conjugation is not a simply detoxification pathway. Dual action of catechol estrogen metabolites in mammary carcinogenesis as the ER-signaling molecules and chemical carcinogen will be discussed in this review.

Monitoring of III-V semiconductor surface by In-situ Surface PhotoAbsorption

  • We present the investigation on P- and As-desorption process from the (001) InP surface in metal organic chemical vapor deposition using surface photoabsorption (SPA). The monochromatic SPA signal showed rapid initial increase to reach In-stabilized surface value after $PH_3$ was turned off, but in case of As-desorption, the signal showed clear existence of a metastable state after the $AsH_3$ was turned off. The SPA spectra at each stable surfaces were taken to confirm the interpretation. This result indicates that the As-desorption process should be understood as a two-step process, in contrast to P-desorption of one-step process.

  • The phenomena of drag reduction using small quantities of a liner macromolecules has attracted the attention of many experimental investigations. On the other hand drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to flow with cavitation which occurs pump impellers. But the research on dragreduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction, mean liquid velocity and turbulent intensity whether polymer additives a horizontal single and two phase system or not. Flow pattern of air-water two phase flow was classified by electrical conductivity probe signal. Velocities and turbulent intensities of signal were measured simultaneously with a Hot-film anemometer.

  • Ultra High Vacuum chamber for surface analysis and a series of AES-LEED controllers for LEED optics was designed and constructed. Electron energy resolution of LEED optics was tested. On the basis of the layer by layer mode, thickness of evaporated Ni on Pt(111) was calculated from the Auger signal ratio.
