Preparation and Characteristics of Li/$V_6O_{13}$ Secondary Battery (Li/$V_6O_{13}$ 2차전지의 제조 및 특성)

  • The purpose of this research is to develop the lithium secondary battery. This paper describes the preparation, electrochemical properties of nontstoichiometric(NS)-$V_6O_{13}$ and characteristics of Li/$V_6O_{13}$ secondary battery. NS-$V_6O_{13}$ was prepared by thermal decomposition of $NH_4VO_3$ under Ar stream of 140ml/min~180ml/min flow rate. And then, this NS-$V_6O_{13}$ was used for cathode active material. Cathode sheet was prepared by compressing the composite of NS-$V_6O_{13}$, acetylene black(A.B) and teflon emulsion (T.E). Characteristics of the test cell are summarised as follows. Oxidation capacity of NS-$V_6O_{13}$ was about 20% less than its reduction capacity. A part of NS-$V_6O_{13}$ cathode active material showed irreversible reaction in early charge-discharge cycle. This phenomena seems to be caused by irreversible incoporation/discoporation of lithium cation to/from NS-$V_6O_{13}$ host. Discharge characteristics curve of Li/$V_6O_{13}$ cell showed 4 potential plateaus. Charge-discharge capacity was declined in the beginning of cycling and slowly increased in company with increasing of coulombic efficiency. Energy density per weight of $V_6O_{13}$ cathode material was as high as 522Wh/kg~765Wh/kg.

Composited Conductive Materials for Enhancing the Ultrafast Performance for Anode in Lithium-Ion Battery (리튬이온전지 음극의 고속 성능 향상을 위한 도전재 복합화)

  • Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are powerful energy storage devices with several advantages, including high energy density, large voltage window, high cycling stability, and eco-friendliness. However, demand for ultrafast charge/discharge performance is increasing, and many improvements are needed in the electrode which contains the carbon-based active material. Among LIB electrode components, the conductive additive plays an important role, connecting the active materials and enhancing charge transfer within the electrode. This impacts electrical and ionic conductivity, electrical resistance, and the density of the electrode. Therefore, to increase ultrafast cycling performance by enhancing the electrical conductivity and density of the electrode, we complexed Ketjen black and graphene and applied conductive agents. This electrode, with the composite conductive additives, exhibited high electrical conductivity (12.11 S/cm), excellent high-rate performance (28.6 mAh/g at current density of 3,000 mA/g), and great long-term cycling stability at high current density (88.7 % after 500 cycles at current density of 3,000 mA/g). This excellent high-rate performance with cycling stability is attributed to the increased electrical conductivity, due to the increased amount of graphene, which has high intrinsic electrical conductivity, and the high density of the electrode.

  • As a driving method of AC-PDP, Address-Display Separated(ADS) driving has been widely adopted for its simple architecture and low discharge failure rate. However, a high definition like a HDTV has defect of long addressing time by reason of a number of pixels. Priming effect isn't fully sustained because of long addressing time during the address period. Therefore, it has different wall charge and luminance of each addressing time in the sustain period. In this study, we suggest a new driving waveform on the address period to improve these defects. We applied a ramp waveform, instead of a square waveform, to an address period in ADS, for operating on the AC-PDP, which used the conventional gas [He-Ne-Xe]. When the ramp waveform is applied to the address period, we experimented for uniform wall charge and the improved luminance by sustained Priming effect at each addressing time in the sustain period.

Battery Cell SOC Estimation Using Neural Network (뉴럴 네트워크를 이용한 배터리 셀 SOC 추정)

  • This paper proposes a method of estimating the SOC(State of Charge) of a battery cell using a neural network algorithm. To this, we implement a battery SOC estimation simulator and derive input and output data for neural network learning through charge and discharge experiments at various temperatures. Finally, the performance of the battery SOC estimation is analyzed by comparing with the experimental value by Ah-counting using Matlab/Simulink program and confirmed that the error rate can be reduced to less than 3%.

  • One-dimensional modeling was carried-out to predict the capacity loss of a lithium-ion polymer battery during cycling. The model not only accounted for electrochemical kinetics and ionic mass transfer in a battery cell, but also considered the parasitic reaction inducing the capacity loss. In order to validate the modeling, modeling results were compared with the measurement data of the cycling behaviors of the lithium-ion polymer batteries having nominal capacity of 5Ah from LG Chem. The cycling was performed under the protocol of the constant current discharge and the constant current and constant voltage charge. The discharge rate of 1C was used. The range of state of charge was between 1 and 0.2. The voltage was kept constant at 4.2 V until the charge current tapered to 50 mA. The retention capacity of the battery was measured with 1C and 5C discharge rates before the beginning of cycling and after every 100 cycles of cycling. The modeling results were in good agreement with the measurement data.

Thin Film Battery Using Micro-Well Patterned Titanium Substrates Prepared by Wet Etching Method

  • Titanium sheet metal substrates used in thin film batteries were wet etched and their surface area was increased in order to increase the discharge capacity and power density of the batteries. To obtain a homogeneous etching pattern, we used a conventional photolithographic process. Homogeneous hemisphere-shaped wells with a diameter of approximately $40\;{\mu}m$ were formed on the surface of the Ti substrate using a photo-etching process with a $20\;{\mu}m{\times}20\;{\mu}m$ square patterned photo mask. All-solid-state thin film cells composed of a Li/Lithium phosphorous oxynitride (Lipon)/$LiCoO_2$ system were fabricated onto the wet etched substrate using a physical vapor deposition method and their performances were compared with those of the cells on a bare substrate. It was found that the discharge capacity of the cells fabricated on wet etched Ti substrate increased by ca. 25% compared to that of the cell fabricated on bare one. High discharge rate was also able to be obtained through the reduction in the internal resistance. However, the cells fabricated on the wet etched substrate exhibited a higher degradation rate with charge-discharge cycling due to the nonuniform step coverage of the thin films, while the cells on the bare substrate demonstrated a good cycling performance.

The Effects of Ag Addition on the Electrode Properties of Hydrogen Storage Alloys (Zr계 수소저장합금의 전극특성에 미치는 은 첨가의 영향)

  • The effects of Ag addition to Zr-based hydrogen storage alloys ($Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$, $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$ and $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Fe_{0.1}$) on the electrode properties were examined. Ag-free and Ag-added Ze-based alloys were prepared by arc melting, crushed mechanically, and subjected to the electrochemical measurement. In $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy, 0.08 wt% Ag addition to the alloy improved the activation rate. Also Ag addition improved both activation property and discharge capacity in $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$. For these Ag-added alloys, discharge capacities with the change of charge-discharge current density(10mA, 15mA and 30mA) are almost constant. Showing very high rate capability, discharge capacity of $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Fe_{0.1}$ alloy increased by Ag addition to the alloy. When the amount of Ag addition in $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy increased too much, the electrode properties became worse. Unveiling mechanism of effect of Ag addition is now progressing in our laboratory.

A Surfactant-based Method for Carbon Coating of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 Cathode in Li Ion Batteries

  • A $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ (LNCAO/C) active material composite cathode was coated with carbon. The conductive carbon coating was obtained by addition of surfactant during synthesis. The addition of surfactant led to the formation of an amorphous carbon coating layer on the pristine LNCAO surface. The layer of carbon coating was clearly detected by FE-TEM analysis. In electrochemical performance, although the LNCAO/C showed similar capacity at low C-rate conditions, the rate capability was improved by the form of the carbon coating at high current discharge state. After 40 cycles of charge-discharge processes, the capacity retention of LNCAO/C was better than that of LNCAO. The carbon coating is effectively protected the surface structure of the pristine LNCAO during Li insertion-extraction.

Structural Behavior of Mixed $LiMn_2O_4-LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ Cathode in Li-ion Cells during Electrochemical Cycling

  • The research and development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) are intensified due to the energy crisis and environmental concerns. In order to meet the challenging requirements of powering HEV, PHEV and EV, the current lithium battery technology needs to be significantly improved in terms of the cost, safety, power and energy density, as well as the calendar and cycle life. One new technology being developed is the utilization of composite cathode by mixing two different types of insertion compounds [e.g., spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $LiMO_2$ (M=Ni, Co, and Mn)]. Recently, some studies on mixing two different types of cathode materials to make a composite cathode have been reported, which were aimed at reducing cost and improving self-discharge. Numata et al. reported that when stored in a sealed can together with electrolyte at $80^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, the concentrations of both HF and $Mn^{2+}$ were lower in the can containing $LiMn_2O_4$ blended with $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$ than that containing $LiMn_2O_4$ only. That reports clearly showed that this blending technique can prevent the decline in capacity caused by cycling or storage at elevated temperatures. However, not much work has been reported on the charge-discharge characteristics and related structural phase transitions for these composite cathodes. In this presentation, we will report our in situ x-ray diffraction studies on this mixed composite cathode material during charge-discharge cycling. The mixed cathodes were incorporated into in situ XRD cells with a Li foil anode, a Celgard separator, and a 1M $LiPF_6$ electrolyte in a 1 : 1 EC : DMC solvent (LP 30 from EM Industries, Inc.). For in situ XRD cell, Mylar windows were used as has been described in detail elsewhere. All of these in situ XRD spectra were collected on beam line X18A at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory using two different detectors. One is a conventional scintillation detector with data collection at 0.02 degree in two theta angle for each step. The other is a wide angle position sensitive detector (PSD). The wavelengths used were 1.1950 ${\AA}$ for the scintillation detector and 0.9999 A for the PSD. The newly installed PSD at beam line X18A of NSLS can collect XRD patterns as short as a few minutes covering $90^{\circ}$ of two theta angles simultaneously with good signal to noise ratio. It significantly reduced the data collection time for each scan, giving us a great advantage in studying the phase transition in real time. The two theta angles of all the XRD spectra presented in this paper have been recalculated and converted to corresponding angles for ${\lambda}=1.54\;{\AA}$, which is the wavelength of conventional x-ray tube source with Cu-$k{\alpha}$ radiation, for easy comparison with data in other literatures. The structural changes of the composite cathode made by mixing spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $Li-Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ in 1 : 1 wt% in both Li-half and Li-ion cells during charge/discharge are studied by in situ XRD. During the first charge up to ~5.2 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, the in situ XRD spectra for the composite cathode in the Li-half cell track the structural changes of each component. At the early stage of charge, the lithium extraction takes place in the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component only. When the cell voltage reaches at ~4.0 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, lithium extraction from the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component starts and becomes the major contributor for the cell capacity due to the higher rate capability of $LiMn_2O_4$. When the voltage passed 4.3 V, the major structural changes are from the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, while the $LiMn_2O_4$ component is almost unchanged. In the Li-ion cell using a MCMB anode and a composite cathode cycled between 2.5 V and 4.2 V, the structural changes are dominated by the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component, with much less changes in the layered $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, comparing with the Li-half cell results. These results give us valuable information about the structural changes relating to the contributions of each individual component to the cell capacity at certain charge/discharge state, which are helpful in designing and optimizing the composite cathode using spinel- and layered-type materials for Li-ion battery research. Influence of Carbon Black as a Conductor on Electrode Characteristics for Lithium Secondary Battery

  • The electrochemical behavior of the $LiCoO_2$ electrode, containing carbon black as a conductor, depends upon the nature and characteristics of carbon black. In this study, six different kinds of carbon blacks were employed to investigate the relationship between the properties of carbon blacks and electrochemical characteristics of the electrode. The larger amount of surface oxygen functional groups brought the lower electrical conductivity for the carbon blacks. The electrical conductivity of carbon blacks was closely related to the impurities such as ash and volatile content. The rate capability and cyclability of the electrode were improved with the higher conductivity of carbon blacks used. So, it can be concluded that high conductive carbon black plays an important role as a conductor for high rate of charge-discharge capability and initial efficiency.
