Evaluation of Antidiarrhoeal Activity of Aerva species

  • The genus Aerva is distributed is temperate and stropical Asia and Africa. Aerva species, Aerva lanata and Aerva javanica have been used for antidiarrhoeal activity in Indian traditional medicine. A.lanata and A.javanica were screened separately for their. anti-diarrhoeal activity and their action on intestinal transit on their vacuum dried ethanolic and aqueous extracts at the dose of 800 mg/kg by standard methods. All the extracts showed significant antidairrhoeal activity and significantly reduced intestinal transit in charcoal meal test. The results illustrate that the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of A.lanata and the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of A.javanica have significant antidiarrhoeal activity and the activity may be attributed to its effect on intestinal transit. The present study supports the claim of Aerva lanata and Aerva javanica as antidiarrhoeal drugs in the Indian system of medicine.

자연대기수준의 오존농도가 동진벼의 수량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Ambient Ozone Levels on Rice Yield)

  • Open-top field chamber study was carried out to investigate effect of ambient ozone level on the yield of rice cultivar 'Dongjin' in Kwangyang area located in the vicinity of the industrial complex of Yechon petrolium refinery and chemical works or Kwangyang Iron and Steel works during the summer of 1997. mean ozone concentration of ambient air during daytime (9:00∼17:00) was revealed to exceed over 40 ppb which is defined to be a critical level causing plant injury and yield reduction in Europe. Yield component analysis showed that there was no significant difference in rice yield between ambient air and charcoal-filtered air. The results suggest that the ambient ozone levels during the exposure period had no effect on yield reduction of rice cultivar 'Dongjin' and it is likely that the cultivar is tolerant to ambient ozone levels.

  • The Effects of Dietary Supplemental Charcoal Extract (CE) were examined on performance of 19-week-old ISA Brown hens for 12weeks. Four hundred and fifty were randolmy assigned to 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1% dietary CE, respectively with five replicates of 18 hens per pen. Basal diets contained 17.5% CP and 2,800 ME. Egg production egg weight, feed conversion(FC), and egg qualities were measured in every four weeks. Egg production and FC was slightly improved in 0.05% supplemental CE group compared to that of other treatments, but was not signhificant different. Average egg weight was significantly higher in 0.025% and 0.1% than other treatments(P<0.05). Total egg mass tended to be higher in 0.05% supplementation. Daily feed intake increased in 0.1% supplementation than the others, but was not statistically different. Eggshell breaking strength and Haugh unit were tended to be higher in 0.05% supplementation. There were no significant difference in eggshell thickness and yolk color of all treatments.

토양중 Thiolane 농도 결정방법 (Determination of Thiolane Concentration from Soils by Purging Apparatus)

  • The unknown amount of thiolane retained on different soil matrix was characterized by employing an uniquely designed glass vessel, which was forced to purge the prepared slurry sample so that thiolane may diffuse into Tenax/charcoal tube. Thiolane can be recovered ranging from approximately 89 % at 1 ppm regardless of soil types, which was not consequently affected by potential biodegradation during sample preparation. For 5 ppm. thiolane is more recoverable up to 92 % for sand, whereas it was poorly recovered as low as 85 % for clay. It strongly suggests that controls should be considered when soil types varied in a concerned area. The technique was eventually capable of determination of thiolane for the samples taken from the site which led to be taken into consideration for proper site remediation.

  • Liquid smoke is made by concentration of smoke generated from charcoal of broad-leaved trees, or by refinement of smoke originated from incomplete combustion of wood condensate (Park et al., 1994). Generally, it is well known that phenol and its derivatives have antioxidative effect, while acids and formaldehyde have antimicrobial effect (Park et al., 1994). Meanwhile, some studies (Alonge, 1988; Dungel, 1961) reported that the high incidence of stomach cancer has been associated with the consumption of smoked fishes, and these were investigated to direct intake of fishes treated with smoke, containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)(Moret et al., 1999).   • In the screening of actinomycetes culture filtrate for inhibitor of adenosine deaminase, a novel inhibitor was found in a cultured broth of strain J-144K. The optimum conditions for the adenosine deaminase inhibitor production from the isolated strain J-144K were evaluated. This strain showed the maximum yield of adenosine deaminase inhibitor when grown at pH 7.0 and 30$\circ$C for 60 hours in the medium of 1.0% dextrose, 0.5% yeast extract, 0.5% peptone and 0.1% KH$_{2}$PO$_{4}$ under the aerobic condition. Through the activated charcoal extraction, methanol fractionation, Dowex 50 H$^{+}$ X-8 ion exchange column chromatography, Dowex CI$^{-}$ X-8 ion exchange column chromatography, and Sephadex G-15 gel filtration procedures, this inhibitor was purified with three materials.

Plant Regeneration of Soybean Cultivars via Somatic Embryogenesis

  • Effective plant regeneration from immature cotyledons of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars was achieved via somatic embryogenesis. Somatic embryogenesis was performed with the cotyledons of immature embryos 14-20 d after flowering. Immature cotyledons of cv. Whangkeum were placed abaxial or adaxial side down on modified MS medium containing 20mg/L 2,4-D. The greatest number of somatic embryos, 1.2 per cotyledon, was produced from those of 4.0-4.9 mm in length which had been placed abaxial side down. Among cvs. Pecking, Whangkeum and Baekwoon, Pecking had the highest embryo induction efficiency with 4.3 somatic embryos per cotyledon in 20mg/L 2,4-D treatment and with 1.0 embryo per cotyledon in 8mg/L NAA treatment. Germinable globular somatic embryos were induced with the highest efficiency, 27.6%, in 20mg/L 2,4-D and were proliferated efficiently on liquid medium containing 10mg/L 2,4-D. The globular somatic embryos developed into germinable mature somatic embryos on medium containing 10 $\mu$M CoCl2, 9% sucrose, and 0.5% activated charcoal. These mature somatic embryos germinated on hormone-free mediu. After transfer to the soil, regenerated plants with seeds were obtained.

  • This study was conducted to develop the clonal propagation technique through in vitro culture using basal stem explants in Phalaenopsis hybrid grown in vitro. The highest frequency of protocorm-like body (PLB) formation was obtained when basal stem explants were cultured on VW medium containing 30g/L sucrose, 500 mg/L activated charcoal, 150 ml/L coconut water, 1 mg/L NAA, 5 mg/L 2iP and 2.5g/L gel rite. PLBs transferred to Hyponex medium were regenerated to plantlets. Plantlets transferred to plastic pots containing spagnum moss were developed and successfully acclimatized under greenhouse. The flower was bloomingly opened in plants regenerated from basal stem explants. The flower was not different from both mother plant and plant induced through clonal propagation of Phalaenopsis hybrid.

누에나방 혈림프의 high affinity 유약호르몬 결합단백질의 특성 (Characterization of High Affinity Juvenile Hormone Binding protein in the Hemolvmph of Bombyx mori L.)

  • Hemolymph SHBP (hJHBP) was partially purified from last instar larvae of Bombyx zori by gel filtration and their optimal reaction conditions of dextrin coated charcoal binding assay were determined. Dissociation constant (KD) of hJHBP for JH III was calculated to be 1.45 $\times$ 10-7 M at $4^{\circ}C.$ The molecular weight of hJHBP was estimated to be 30 kDa by gel filtration on a calibrated Sephadex G-100 column and 33 kDa by SDS-PAGE. These results indicate that hSHBP consists of a single polvpeptide chain. Isoelectric point of hJHBP was found to be pH 5.1 and 19 of the first 20 amino acid residues were determined from N-terminus of purified hJHBP.
