Rebar corrosion in cement mortar containing chloride ions was investigated by electrochemical AC impedance spectroscopy. Corrosion of mild steel bar was accelerated by an acceleration test equipment in short period. Impedance values obtained from AC-impedance method could be adapted to the proposed electrochemical equivalent circuit model and they were consistent with calculated values obtained by CNLS fitting method. The weight loss of rebar could be calculated by charge transfer resistance($R_2$) with time and it was close to real value.
Sensor system which can detect a flowing cell is designed and fabricated by semiconductor processing and EDM(Electro-chemical Discharge drilling Method). Two methods are used in this paper; 1) optical method which measures the trasmitted light through the cell passage between transmitter and receiver, 2) impedance method which measures impedance change between electrodes, when cell flows in the cell passage. Experimental result using tabaco leaves shows that the ouput value by optical method is 0.2V to 0.7V, and the output by impedance method is 0.2V to 2V, which is bigger, but it includes an avoidable noises.

The fabrication and experimentation of multi-channel electrodes which enable detecting and recording of multi-site neuronal signals have been investigated. A multi-channel electrode array was fabricated by depositing 2000${\AA}$ thick Au layer on the 1000${\AA}$ thick Ti adhesion layer on a glass wafer. The metal paths were patterned by wet etching and passivated by depositing a PECVD silicon nitride insulation layer to prevent signals from intermixing or cross-talking. After placing a thin slice of rat cerebellar granule cell in the culture ring located in central portion of the multi-channel electrode plate, a neuronal signal from an electrode which is in contact with the cerebellar granule cell has been detected. It was found that the electrode impedance ranges 200㏀∼1㏁ and the impedance is not changed by cleaning with nitric acid. Also, the impedance is inversely proportion to the exposed electrode area and the cross-talk is negligible when the electrode spacing is bigger than 600$\mu\textrm{m}$. The amplitude and frequency of the measured action potential were 38㎷ and 2㎑, which are typical values. From the experimental results, the fabricated multi-channel electrode array proved to be suitable for multi-site neuronal signal detection for the analysis of a complicated cell network.

Infiltration is one of detrimental problems occurring in nursing or medical settings. Early detection of infiltration is essential to minimize the risk of injury from infiltration. To perform a preliminary study on the point of care and automated infiltration detection system, bioelectrical impedance was investigated using bioelectrical impedance analyzer. We would like to report experimental results that allow impedance parameters to effectively distinguish infiltration. Electrodes were attached to both sides of the transparent dressing on the fusion site where IV solution was being infused. Then, impedance parameters before and after infiltration were measured as a function of time and frequency. The experimental results are as follows. After infiltration was intentionally induced by puncturing the vein wall with a needle, the resistance gradually decreased with time. That is, when an alternating current having a frequency of 20 kHz was applied to the electrodes, the resistance gradually decreased with time, reflecting the accumulation of IV solution in the extracellular fluid since the current could not pass through the cell membrane. Impedance parameters and equivalent circuit model for human cell were used to examine the mechanism of current flow before and after infiltration, which could be used for early detection of infiltration.
Corrosion behavior of steel reinforcements embedded in concrete containing various chloride ion concentrations was investigated by an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS). Chloride ions were introduced into the concrete by dissolving the NaCl and $CaCl_2$ in the water with a given weight of cement. Based on the impedance parameters measured by EIS, more complete equivalent circuit, a schematic physical model, and the mechanism of concrete reinforcement corrosion were suggested. By the implement of experimental impedance parameters obtained from the model with corresponding CNLS-fitting data, the corrosion rate of steel reinforcement with chloride ions could be predicted.
The catalyst layer of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is a mixture of polymer, carbon, and platinum. The characteristics of the catalyst layer play critical role in determining the performance of the PEM fuel cell. This research investigates the role of catalyst layer composition using a Central Composite Design (CCD) experiment with two factors which are Nafion content and carbon loading while the platinum catalyst surface area is held constant. For each catalyst layer composition, polarization curves are measured to evaluate cell performance at common operating conditions, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) are then applied to investigate the cause of the observed variations in performance. The results show that both Nafion and carbon content significantly affect MEA performance. The ohmic resistance and active catalyst area of the cell do not correlate with catalyst layer composition, and observed variations in the cell resistance and active catalyst area produced changes in performance that were not significant relative to compositions of catalyst layers.

This paper presents the design of a lab-built powered knee prosthesis based on a BLDC motor, a sensored impedance control using a force sensor, and a sensorless impedance control through torque estimation. Firstly, we describe the structure of the lab-built powered knee prosthesis and its limitations. Secondly, we decompose the gait cycle into five stages and apply the position-based impedance control for the powered knee prosthesis. Thirdly, we perform an experiment for the torque estimation and the sensorless impedance control of the prosthesis. The experimental results show that we can use the torque estimation to control the low impedance during the swing phase, although the estimated torque data has a delay compared with the measured torque by a load cell.

This paper presents the development of a microsystem for whole blood purification and electrophysiological analysis of the purified cells. Magnetophoresis using continuous diamagnetic capture (DMC) was utilized for whole cell purification and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was utilized for electrophysiological analysis of the purified cells. The system was developed on silicon and plastic substrates utilizing conventional microfabrication technologies and plastic microfabrication technologies. Using the magnetophoretic microseparator, white blood cells were purified from a sample of whole blood. The experimental results of the DMC microseparator show that 89.7% of the red blood cells (RBCs) and 72.7% of the white blood cells (WBCs) could be continuously separated out from a whole blood using an external magnetic flux of 0.2 T. EIS was used as a downstream whole cell analysis tool to study the electrophysiological characteristics of purified cells. In this work, primary cultured bovine chromaffin cells and human red blood cells were characterized using EIS. Further analysis capabilities of the EIS were demonstrated by successfully obtaining unique impedance signatures for chromaffin cells based on the whole cell ion channel activity.

Fuel cell is a modular, high efficient and environmentally energy conversion device, it has become a promising option to replace the conventional fossil fuel based electric power plants. The high temperature fuel cell has conspicuous feature and high potential in being used as an energy converter of various fuel to electricity and heat. Corrosions in molten electrolytes and the electric conductivity across the oxide scale have crucial characteristics. When molten salts are involved, high temperature corrosions become severe. In this sense, corrosions of alloys with molten carbonates have the most severe material problems. Systematic investigation on corrosion behavior of Fe/21Cr/Ti or Al alloy has been done in (62+38)mol% (Li+K)$CO_3$ melt at $650^{\circ}C$ using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that the corrosion current of these Fe-based alloys decreased with increasing Al or Ti. And Al addition improved the corrosion resistance of this type of specimen and more improvement of corrosion resistance was observed at the specimen added with Al.
This article is concerned with synthesis, characterisation and electrochemical application of the mixed conducting perovskite type oxide to electrode materials for solid oxide fuel cell. First, this review provides a comprehensive survey of the various synthetic methods such as solid state reaction, Pechini, glycine nitrate process and sol-gel methods for the preparation of perovskite type oxide powders. Subsequently, the electrical and microstructural properties of the mixed conducting oxides were discussed in detail. Finally, as electrochemical applications of the mixed conducting perovskite type oxides to electrode materials for solid oxide fuel cell, fundamentals of theoretical ac-impedance model for porous mixed conducting electrodes were introduced. Furthermore, the ac-impedance behaviour of porous and dense mixed conducting electrodes prepared by various synthetic methods was discussed.
