Cavities are inevitable structures in automobile configuration. The flow-induced noise is generated from the wheel housing section by the interaction between a rotating wheel and the unsteady flows in the cavity. In this research the wheel housing was assumed by a rectangular cavity for simplification. We measured the radiated sound from the 2-D cavity without cylinder and from the rotating cylinder in the cavity by using the sound source localization method with an acoustic mirror system. In the 2-D cavity case of low Mach number(Ma=0.029), the sound sources were found to be located near the leading edge of cavity due to the shear layer instabilities. Comparing the cases of the rotating and the non-rotating cylinder, it is observed that the sound Pressure levels around the rotating cylinder in the cavity increased and the main acoustic sources were located at the rear section of the rotating wheel.
Small injection molded articles such as lens and mobile product's parts are usually molded in multi-cavity mold. The problems occurred in multi-cavity molding are flow imbalance among the cavities. The flow imbalance affects on the dimensions and physical properties of molded articles. First of all, the origin of flow imbalance is geometrical imbalance of delivery system. However, even the geometry of delivery system is balanced well the cavity imbalance is being developed. This comes from the unsuitable operational conditions of injection molding. Among the operational conditions, injection speed is the most significant process variable affecting the filling imbalances in multi-cavity injection molding. In this study, experimental study of flow imbalance has been conducted for various injection speeds and materials. Also, the filling Imbalances were compared with CAE results. The dimensions and physical state of multi-cavity molded parts were examined. The results showed that the filling imbalances vary according to the injection speed and flow property of resins. Subsequently, the imbalanced filling and pressure distribution in the multi-cavity affect on the dimensions and physical states of molded parts.

First of all, the origin of flow imbalance is geometrical imbalance of delivery system. However, even the geometry of delivery system is balanced the cavity imbalance is being developed. This comes from the temperature distribution in the cross-section of runner, which is affected by the operational conditions. In this study, experimental study of flow imbalance has been conducted for various injection speeds. This study also suggests new runner design to eliminate flow imbalance in multi-cavity injection mold. Simulation and experimental results showed suggested new designed runner could eliminate or reduce flow imbalance in multi-cavity injection mold.
Flight vehicles such as wheel wells and bomb bays have many cavities. The flow around a cavity is characterized as an unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices brought by the interaction between the free stream shear layer and the internal flow of the cavity. The resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect the aerodynamic performance and stability of the vehicle. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed for the cavity flows using the unsteady compressible three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation with Wilcox's turbulence model. The Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallelized code was used for the calculations by PC-cluster. The cavity has aspect ratios (L/D) of 5.5 ~ 7.5 with width ratios (W/D) of 2 ~ 4. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.4 ~ 0.6 and $1.6{\times}10^6$, respectively. The occurrence of oscillation is observed in the "shear layer and transient mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequencies are analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The dominant frequencies are very similar to the result of Rossiter's formula and other experimental datum in the low aspect ratio cavity (L/D = ~4.5). In the high aspect ratio cavity, however, there are other low dominant frequencies of the leading edge shear layer with the dominant frequencies of the feedback mechanism.

The unsteady supersonic flow over two- and three-dimensional cavities has been analyzed by the integration of unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) with the k-$\omega$ turbulence model. The unsteady flow is characterized by the periodicity due to the mutual relation between the shear layer and the internal flow in the cavity. An explicit 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme and an upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with the van Leer limiters are used for time and space discritizations, respectively. The cavity has a L/D ratio of 3 for two-dimensional case, and same L/D and W/D ratio of I for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 1.5 and 450000 respectively. In the three-dimensional flow, the field is observed to oscillate in the 'shear layer mode' with a feedback mechanism that follows Rossiter's formula. In the two-dimensional simulation, the self-sustained oscillating flow has more violent fluctuation inside the cavity. The primary fluctuating frequencies of two- and three- dimensional flow agree very well with the 2nd mode of Rossiter's frequency. In the three-dimensional flow, the 1st mode of frequency could be seen.
In order to examine the possibility of using a cavity as a passive device for reduction of skin friction and heat transfer, an intensive parametric study over a broad range of the cavity depth and length at different Reynolds numbers is performed for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers in the present study. Direct and large eddy simulation techniques are used for turbulent boundary layers at low and moderate Reynolds numbers, respectively. for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers over a cavity, a flow oscillation occurs due to the shear layer instability when the cavity depth and length are sufficiently large and it plays an important role in the determination of drag and heat-transfer increase or decrease. For a cavity sufficiently small to suppress the flow oscillation, both the total drag and heat transfer are reduced. Therefore, the applicability of a cavity as a passive device for reduction of drag and heat transfer is fully confirmed in the present study. Scaling based on the wall shear rate of the incoming boundary layer is also proposed and it is found to be valid in steady flow over a cavity.
Horseshoe vortices are formed at the junction of an object immersed in fluid-flow and endwall plate as a result of three-dimensional boundary layer separation. This study shows preliminary results of the kinematics of such horseshoe vortices around a circular cylinder with a cavity (slot) placed upstream to disturb the primary separation line. Through the cavity, no mass flow addition (blowing) or reduction (suction) is applied. The upstream cavity weakens the adverse pressure gradient before the cavity. With the upstream cavity, a single vortex is found to form immediately upstream of the cylinder whereas a typical two vortex system is observed in the absence of the cavity. Furthermore, the strength of the single vortex tends to be reduced, resulting from the interaction with the separated flow convecting directly towards the leading edge of the cylinder.
