  • Various crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridines) (CHP4VP) having different degrees of crosslinking were synthesized by radical copolymerization of 4-vinylpyridine with if N,N' -1, 6-hexamethylenebisacrylamide, and CHP4VP- Cu(II) complexes were prepared by the method of adsorption equilibrium. The catalytic activity of the complexes for the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) was investigated. The oxidation of AA by these complexes showed a kinetic behavior of the Michaelis-Menten type. The catalytic activity of CHP4VP-Cu(I ) catalytic system was increased with increasing the degree of crosslinking of CHP4VP, and its activity was scarcely decreased even after repeated use. However, the tendency of the catalytic activity of CHP4VP-Cu(II) complexes was decreased for the oxidation of AA when compared with that of the previously reported catalytic system containing crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine) prepared using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. These results indicate that the degree of crosslinking of CHP4VP and the hydrophobicity of the crosslinker play an important role in the catalytic system of the oxidation of AA.

  • The cbb3 cytochrome c oxidase has the dual function as a terminal oxidase and oxygen sensor in the photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides. The cbb3 oxidase forms a signal transduction pathway together with the PrrBA two-component system that controls photosynthesis gene expression in response to changes in oxygen tension in the environment. Under aerobic conditions the cbb3 oxidase generates an inhibitory signal, which shifts the equilibrium of PrrB kinase/phosphatase activities towards the phosphatase mode. Photosynthesis genes are thereby turned off under aerobic conditions. The catalytic subunit (CcoN) of the R. sphaeroides cbb3 oxidase contains five histidine residues (H2l4, B233, H303, H320, and H444) that are conserved in all CcoN subunits of the cbb3 oxidase, but not in the catalytic subunits of other members of copper-heme superfamily oxidases. H214A mutation of CcoN affected neither catalytic activity nor sensory (signaling) function of the cbb3 oxidase, whereas H320A mutation led to almost complete loss of both catalytic activity and sensory function of the cbb3 oxidase. H233V and H444A mutations brought about the partial loss of catalytic activity and sensory function of the cbb3 oxidase. Interestingly, the H303A mutant form of the cbb3 oxidase retains the catalytic function as a cytochrome c oxidase as compared to the wild-type oxidase, while it is defective in signaling function as an oxygen sensor. H303 appears to be implicated in either signal sensing or generation of the inhibitory signal to the PrrBA two-component system.

  • Due to their excellent catalytic activity with respect to methanol oxidation on platinum at low temperature, platinum nanosized catalysts have been a topic of great interest for use in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Since pure platinum is readily poisoned by CO, a by-product of methanol electrooxidation, and is extremely expensive, a number of efforts to design and characterize Pt-based alloy nanosized catalysts or Pt nanophase-support composites have been attempted in order to reduce or relieve the CO poisoning effect. In this review paper, we summarize these efforts based upon our recent research results. The Pt-based nanocatalysts were designed by chemical synthesis and thin-film technology, and were characterized by a variety of analyses. According to bifunctional mechanism, it was concluded that good alloy formation with $2^{nd}$ metal (e.g., Ru) as well as the metallic state and optimum portion of Ru element in the anode catalyst contribute to an enhanced catalytic activity for methanol electrooxidation. In addition, we found that the modified electronic properties of platinum in Pt alloy electrodes as well as the surface and bulk structure of Pt alloys with a proper composition could be attributed to a higher catalytic activity for methanol electooxdation. Proton conducting contribution of nanosized electrocatalysts should also be considered to be excellent in methanol electrooxidation (Spillover effect). Finally, we confirmed the ensemble effect, which combined all above effects, in Pt-based nanocatalsyts especially, such as PtRuRhNi and $PtRuWO_{3}$, contribute to an enhanced catalytic activity.

  • Strong metal-support interaction effect is an important issue in determining the catalytic ac-tivity for heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, we investigated the support effect and the role of organic capping layers of two-dimensional Pt nanocatalysts on reducible metal oxide supports under the CO oxidation. Several reducible metal oxide supports including CeO2, Nb2O5, and TiO2 thin films were prepared via sol-gel techniques. The structure, chemical state and optical property were characterized using XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, and UV-VIS spectrometer. We found that the reducible metal oxide supports have a homogeneous thin thickness and crystalline structure after annealing at high temperature showing the different optical band gap energy. Langmuir-Blodgett technique and arc plasma deposition process were employed to ob-tain Pt nanoparticle arrays with capping and without capping layers, respectively on the oxide support to assess the role of the supports and capping layers on the catalytic activity of Pt catalysts under the CO oxidation. The catalytic performance of CO oxidation over Pt supported on metal oxide thin films under oxidizing reaction conditions (40 Torr CO and 100 Torr O2) was tested. The results show that the catalytic activity significantly depends on the metal oxide support and organic capping layers of Pt nanoparticles, revealing the strong metal-support interaction on these nanocatalysts systems.

  • This work investigated the size and shape effect of ${\gamma}$-alumina-supported metal oxides on the hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. Several metal oxides including Ag, Cu and Ru were used as the catalysts, and n-heptane as the reducing agent. For the Ag/${\gamma}$-alumina catalyst, the $NO_x$ reduction efficiency in the range of $250{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ increased as the size of Ag decreased (20 nm>50 nm>80 nm). The shape effect of metal oxides on the $NO_x$ reduction was examined with spherical- and wire-shape nanoparticles. Under identical condition, higher catalytic activity for $NO_x$ reduction was observed with Ag and Cu wires than with the spheres, while spherical- and wire-shape Ru exhibited similar $NO_x$ reduction efficiency to each other. Among the metal oxides examined, the best catalytic activity for $NO_x$ reduction was obtained with Ag wire, showing almost complete $NO_x$ removal at a temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. For Cu and Ru catalysts, considerable amount of NO was oxidized to $NO_2$, rather than reduced to $N_2$, leading to lower $NO_x$ reduction efficiency.

  • The ozone injection method was proposed to improve the catalytic process for the removal of nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$). Nitric oxide (NO) in the exhaust gas was first oxidized to nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) by ozone produced by dielectric barrier discharge, and then the exhaust gas containing the mixture of NO and $NO_2$ was directed to the catalytic reactor where both NO and $NO_2$ were reduced to $N_2$ in the presence of ammonia as the reducing agent. A commercially available $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst was used as the catalytic reactor. The $NO_2$ content in the mixture of NO and $NO_2$ was changed by the amount of ozone added the exhaust gas. The effect of reaction temperature, initial $NO_x$ concentration, feed gas flow rate, and ammonia concentration on the removal of $NO_x$ at various $NO_2$ contents was examined and discussed. The increase in the content of $NO_2$ by the ozone injection remarkably improved the performance of the catalytic reactor, especially at low temperatures. The present ozone injection method appears to be promising for the improvement of the catalytic reduction of $NO_x$.

  • A series of $TiO_2-SiO_2$catalysts were prepared by coprecipitation from the mixed solution of titanium tetrachloride and sodium silicate. Some of the samples were treated with 1N $H_2SO_4$ and used as modified catalysts. The catalytic activities of modified catalysts were higher than those of unmodified catalysts, and the effect of modification on the catalytic activity was higher for 2 - propanol dehydration than for cumene dealkylation. The catalytic activity of unmodified catalysts was correlated with their acid amount for the above two reactions. As $TiO_2-SiO_2$ catalysts had relatively large amount of weak acid sites and small amount of strong acid sites, the catalytic activity for 2 - propanol dehydration was higher than that for cumene dealkylation. The effect of modification on catalytic activity increased with increasing $TiO_2$content of the catalysts. Actually, $92-TiO_2-SiO_2/SO_4{^2}$had the highest increment in catalytic activity and $10-TiO_2-SiO_2/SO_4{^2}$had the lowest increment for the 2 - propanol dehydration.

  • For investigating NO reduction activity of an catalytic filter, the catalytic performance was measured under the presence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$, respectively or simultaneously in the simulation gas composed of NO, $NH_3$, and air. The catalytic filter was prepared by coating $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst on the pore surface of SiC filter element of which the superior performance for the particulate removal was well known. At the temperature below $260^{\circ}C$, the catalytic activities were enormously decreased under the presence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$, respectively or simultaneously, compared with those under the cases of the absence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$. However, the presence of $SO_2$ promoted the performance of the catalytic filter above $320^{\circ}C$ with showing the NO conversion better than 99.8% for the NO inlet concentration of 500 ppm and at the face velocity of 2 cm/s. In particular, the presence of water showed high NO conversion higher than 99% up to high temperature of $380^{\circ}C$. This effect of water was explained by the reason that it retarded the ammonia oxidation which is the main step into the formation of $N_2O$. The initial NO reduction activity of the catalytic filter maintained for the duration of 100 hours in the presence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$. Therefore, it was concluded that the catalytic filter was promisingly useful for the industrial NOx reduction catalyst in order to treat the particulate and NO simultaneously.

  • The polycondensations of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) naphthalate were kinetically investigated in the presence of various metallic compounds as catalysts at 295 ℃. The effect of the catalyst nature in the polycondensation has been studied. The order of catalytic activity on the formation of poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) was found to be related to the stability constants which are indicated in an index of the catalytic activity.
