  • It is necessary to construct authority records in OPAC to improve the precision and the recall by organizing and connecting information systematically. Especially, the authority records are widely used in the museums, archives, art galleries, etc as well as in the libraries for work collocation and search. But KORMARC-Authority Format (KSX6006-4) could not have been revised and managed consistently reflecting international cataloging trends and revision needs of Korea libraries since it was published in 1999. Resultingly, there are only few libraries that would have constructed the authority records in OPAC in Korea, and OPAC without authority records could deteriorate the search quality. Therefore, this study would suggest the revision of KORMARC-Authority Format by investigating authority related international trends such as ICP, FRAD, RDA, VIAF and analyzing new MARC21-Authority Format applying these authority related trends. The research methods were used such as literature review, the analysis of 5 domestic libraries' authority records and VIAF records, and the group interview with librarians.

  • The second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR 2) was published in December 1978. In 1974 representatives Qf five bodies from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States established the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, and set the aims, structure, and content of AACR 2. Although the goal of a single text for Britain and North America was achieved in AACR 2, the American library community expressed concern about cost-effectiveness of adoption of the new code, and consquently the LC implementation plan called for some minor departures from AACR 2. LC's plan to depart from a number of provisions of the new code will cause a continuation of the problems presented by past practices of superimposition. The purpose of this paper is to examine the revisions made in AACR 2 in the hope that it will contribute to efforts of Korean librarians seeking to focus on the major questions requiring discussion and decisions before adoption of AACR 2 by Korean research libraries who have already adopted Anglo-American Cataloging Rules for Western materials. In this paper attempts were made to follow the order of subjects treated in the code, beginning with general revisions, followed by a discussion of each of the parts of the code, the first for bibliographic description and the second for choice and form of access points. The differences between AACR 1 and AACR 2 that will be most significant to cataloguers are compared with examples. Comparative analysis of optional and alternative rules are viewed from a historical background, and their practical applications for the different types of libraries / or materials are discussed. Specifications of the options adapted by the Library of Congress are presented. Adaption of AACR 2 poses continual problems in Korea. It is very important to maintain consistent sets of information consistently presented in the catalogue regardless of its language. The recognition by cataloguers of the urgent need for conformity and campatability of catalogue between Western mateirals and Oriental materials is recommended, if AACR 2 is to be adapted. It would be intolerable for the catalogue users, if different standards of description and headings were to apply in the same catalogue.

  • This study intends to provide the essential data for developing kid's catalog in Korean public libraries. Focus was on the experience and perception of librarians who have provided a service for the children. To the end, this study investigated the children's information behavior and search behavior of OPAC from the viewpoint of librarians, and figured out what barriers are confronted when children are looking for reading materials. On the basis of data, discussed in details are practical considerations for kid's catalogs to improve the information access of children. The data were collected through a survey and depth interview with 29 librarians in public libraries, and referred to the existing OPAC for the discussion.

  • The goal of this study is to seek for the method of effective DB conversion and related system development for the integrated KORMARC Format on the basis of the case of Sogang University Library. Since the integrated KORMARC bibliographic format was established, libraries have been converting bibliographic DB according to the new format. Loyola Library of Sogang University internally proceeded DB conversion using bibliographic DB convertor, which was developed and customized with a system vendor for Sogang University Library. The internal conversion enabled to correct or supplement bibliographic data errors. Besides, it enhanced stability of conversion and shortened the project time by adopting sampling conversion method. It was effective to reduce the additional work for DB quality maintenance, so this kind of conversion is recommendable to the library that has limited manpower for manual data correction.

  • This study aims to analyze the properties of the tags used in the fiction genre, the structural aspect of the patterns and the contents of the tags by utilizing LibraryThing, where the tags are assigned in work units of FRBR. A comparative analysis was conducted in terms of the level of association between the descriptive terms in bibliography and LCSH terms. The study also examined the sources of the tags not included in the bibliographic descriptions or LCSHs, what aspects of work they represented, and the terms used as tags in relation to the work. By restricting the study to a single genre, a number of tags that reflected the characteristics of fiction (three elements of the fiction which are theme, plot, style and three elements of the fiction composition which are character, event, setting) were extracted. This study finds out the role of the tag making up the taxonomy and proposes a new direction for the tagging system by demonstrating the possibility of using tags as facets in information organization and retrieval.

  • This research analyzed how the main requisites of faceted navigation as names of facets, subterms of facets, order of facets, too many results were user-centric. On the research method, this research analyzed the results of the three keywords retrieved in the 15 university libraries' catalogs and how was user's familiarity to the terms. Although domestic universities have serviced facet navigation, the names of the facet of publication date and series title in format and the terms under the facets as multimedia and nonbook material, media material are too difficult intuitively to understand and there were lots of formal terms used in cataloging rules and the terms librarians have usually used. Because of the terms, there is high possibility to deteriorate users' satisfaction and usability to library catalog in future. Even though they serviced facet navigation, there was also weakness as too many results and the university libraries need to use relevance ranking method to solve the weakness. This research has found the possibility of being used too many of levels of the facets and this may also badly affect the users' experience to library catalog.

  • The results of the study can be summarized as follows. The Shu-mu Da-wen was selected and compiled by Zhang Zhi Dong at the end of Qing Dynasty as a reading list for students preparing for the state examination and for the purpose of choosing the best from several versions. Whether it was compiled and edited by Zhang was in dispute. But it is almost certain that Zhang was the main editor because Shu-mu Da-wen showed his political, educational and scientific thoughts and knowledge distinctively. The followings are characteristics of Shu-mu Da-wen being compared with Si-ku Quan-shu Zong-mu Ti-yao. 1. In Jing-bu, the Confucian classics are divided into Zheng-jing Zheng-zhu and 'Lie-chao Jing-zhu Jing-shuo Jing-ben kao-zheng. Zheng-shi lei is divided into Zheng-shi fen he ke ben and Zheng-shi zhu bu biao pu kao-zheng. It is the special sorting method to include Du-ben lei in Jing-bu and Chu xue du-ben in Bie-lu in order to provide first learners for reading order. 2. Shi-bu included Gu-shi newly and Di-li lei is divided into Gu Di-li and Jin di-li in Shi-bu. Tian-wen Suan-fa lei is divided into Zhong-fa and Xi-fa in Zi-bu. Zhang distinguished between old books and contemporary ones to find out the origin and include newly published books in the East and the West. 3. Zhou-Qin zhu-zi is newly added to Zi-pu. In Ji-pu, Bie-ji and Zong-ji are categorized according to their style and period respectively. This show the new sorting method which added classifying system concerning academic development. It is the prominent feature in the compiling system to make Bie-lu and Cong-shu respective chapters. With those characteristics the Shu-mu Da-wen had been edited and published several times. It had a wide effect not only on compiling methods of cataloging afterwards and but also on classification systems before decimal classification was introduced in China.
