Exhaust manifold is a very important component that is directly connected to air environment pollution and that requires strict mechanical properties such as high temperature fatigue and oxidation. Among stainless steels, the ferritic stainless steel with body-centered cubic structure shows excellent resistance of stress-corrosion cracking, ferromagnetic at room temperature, very excellent cold workability and may not be enhanced by heat treatment. The microstructural characteristics of four cast ferritic stainless steels which are high heat-resistant materials, were analyzed. By comparing and evaluating the mechanical properties at room temperature and high temperature in a range of 400℃~800℃, a database was established to control and predict the required properties and the mechanical properties of the final product. The precipitates of cast ferritic stainless steels were analyzed and the high-temperature deformation characteristics were evaluated by comparative analysis of hardness and tensile characteristics of four steels at room temperature and from 400℃ to 800℃.
Cast austenitic stainless steels (CASSs) are widely used as structural materials in the nuclear industry. The main drawback of CASSs is the reduction in fracture toughness due to long-term exposure to operating environment. Even though ultrasonic non-destructive testing has been conducted in major nuclear components and pipes, the detection of cracks is difficult due to the scattering and attenuation of ultrasonic waves by the coarse grains and the inhomogeneity of CASS materials. In this study, the ultrasonic signals measured in thermally aged CASS were discriminated for the first time with the simple ultrasonic technique (UT) and machine learning (ML) models. Several different ML models, specifically the K-nearest neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) models, were used to classify the ultrasonic signals as thermal aging condition of CASS specimens. We identified that the ML models can predict the category of ultrasonic signals effectively according to the aging condition.

Drilling tests were carried out austempered ductile cast iron(ADI) to clarify the factors influencing the drilling characteristics of ADI material. The machinability of material was evaluated using high speed steel drill and cobalt contained drill of 6mm diameter. The spheroidal graphite cast iron materials were austemized at 900 .deg. C for 1 hour and then wear was kept at 375 .deg. C for 2 hours. Austempered ductile cast iron contains a great deal of retained austenite which contribustes to an improvement of impact strength. In this paper, machinability of ADI was invastigated by drilling experimentation. The results obtained are as follows:a) Flank wear incresses logarithmically with the increases of cutting time and proportionally with the increases of cutting force. b) Drilling hole number of about 2 times can be educed more step feed than ordinary feed due to the high hardness of ADI material and hardness increasing ascribed to the martensite of retained austenite.

For the phase boundary crack found in the gasket made of cast austenitic stainless steel in the nuclear power plant, the oxide layers were analyzed through SEM and TEM. The results showed that cracks initiated and propagated along the austenite/δ-ferrite phase boundary, the propagation path was changed to penetrate the inside of the phase. The oxide layer located at the periphery of the crack along the phase boundary was identified as a complex multi-layered spinel structure, and Cr-rich carbides were also detected in the oxide. The cracks that propagated inside the austenite matrix were attributed to the presence of high external stresses and impurities.

Dependence of dynamic fracture path on loading velocity was observed from experimental results based on the three point bending fracture in cast iron. In this study, 3D and 2D numerical simulations are used to evaluate singular stress fields near crack tip and fracture mechanics parameters. Moving finite element technique, 2D and 3D Delauney automatic mesh generation and contact-noncontact evaluation is introduced into the numerical method. Dynamic fracture thoughness is decreased with increase of impact loading velocity. Fracture mode-ratio corresponds to initial kink angle of fracture path. The numerical result shows that the maximum hoop stress criterion cannot be applied to dynamic fracture of cast iron.

In this study, we investigated the suppression of the corrosion of cast iron in a copper-cast iron double-layered canister under local corrosion of the copper layer. The cold spray coating technique was used to insert metals with lower galvanic activity than that of copper, such as silver, nickel, and titanium, between the copper and cast iron layers. Electrochemically accelerated corrosion tests were performed on the galvanic specimens in KURT groundwater at a voltage of 1.0 V for a week. The results revealed that copper corrosion was evident in all galvanic specimens of Cu-Ag, Cu-Ni, and Cu-Ti. By contrast, the copper was barely corroded in the Cu-Fe specimens. Therefore, it was concluded that if an inactive galvanic metal is applied to the areas where local corrosion is concerned, such as welding parts, the disposal canister can overcome local or non-uniform corrosion of the copper canister for long periods.
This study aims to extract manufacturing techniques by analysing metallurgical characteristics of the cast-iron pot from Bubjusa, examining corrosion status and microstructure with a optical microscope, SEM-EDS, micro vickers hardness tester and XRD. The microstructure analysis has presented that ferrite and partial portion of pearlite exist within the corroded outer layer. The analysis of the inner layer revealed that there is pearlite and graphite of feather shape. The one of the middle layer, which is placed between outer and inner layer, showed that corrosion has been heavily developed. Micro vickers hardness values range from 217Hv to 698Hv in constituent layers and such values lie within the ranges of the ancient iron relics. The result of EDS analysis for each microstructure presented that the outer layer has been more decarbonized than the inner layer. XRD analysis of iron corrosion compound revealed that Goethite and Hematite had been produced from the corrosive process of iron. The study concludes that the large iron pot was made by casting technique, and microstructure of inner layer had a gray cast iron. Outer layer has been decarbonized through repetitive process of heating and cooling. This results can be used as fundamental data for comparative study to reveal manufacturing techniques of large cast-iron pot.
In order to improve dendritic formation of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B phase in the strip-cast Nd-Fe-B alloys that are frequently used for production of high energy sintered magnets, effect of small substitutional additives such as Cu (0.3~1.0 at. %) and Co (0.5~1.5 at.%) on the phase formation and microstructures of the strip-cast alloys based on Nd$\_$14/Fe$\_$80/B$\_$6/ were investigated. As the amount of Cu addition increased, formation of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B dendrites along the direction normal to the strip surface was suppressed with the reduction of the strip thickness mainly due to the increase of fluidity of the melt. However, both the dendrites and their <001> preferred orientation along the direction normal to the strip surface were improved with the increase of the strip thickness as the amount of Co addition increased. The dendrites became finer after small amount of Cu or Co was added. While small copper additions tended to stabilize the formation of primary Fe, small cobalt additions suppressed it. When small amount of Zr was added, however, the dendrite structures were totally collapsed with excessive grain growth of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B.
The purpose of this study was to compare the retention of complete cast crown over amalgam ores, composite resin cores, and cast gold cores when cemented with three different luting agents. Eighteen core specimens each of amalgam(Bestaloy, Dong Myung, Seoul, Korea), composite resin (Z100, 3M Dental product, st. Paul, Minn) and type IV gold alloy (Ba-4, Heesung Engelhard Corp., Korea) were made in a customized milling stainless steel die. A wax pattern with a loop attached to occlusal surface was made for each core and a type II gold alloy casting was fabricated. The castings which had clinically acceptable marginal fit were used as test samples. The following luting cements were used to cement cast crowns on each core material : (1) zinc phosphate cement (Confi-dental Products Co., USA) (2) glass-ionomer cement (Fuji Plus, GC Industrial Corp., Tokyo, Japan) (3) resin cement (Panavia 21, Kuraray Co., USA). All cements were mixed according to manufacturers' instructions. A static load of 5kg was then applied for 10 minutes on the crowns. All specimens were stored in saline solution for 24 hours at $37^{\circ}C$ and thermocycled for 500 cycles. After storage and cycling, the tensile bond strengths were measured by using a universal testing machine (Instron Corp., Canton, Mass.) at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The results were as follows 1. The retentive strength of resin cement was the highest of alt three types of cement for resin core (p<0.05). 2. There was no statistical difference among the retentive strengths of three cements for amalgam core (p>0.05). 3. The retentive strength of resin cement was higher than that of zinc phosphate for cast core, but there was no difference between the retentive strength of glass ionomer cement and those of rein and zinc phosphate cement. 4. The retentive strength of the zinc phosphate cement for amalgam core was the highest of all type of cores.
