  • In the present study, we develop a conductive copper/carbon nanomaterial additive and investigate the effects of the morphologies of the carbon nanomaterials on the conductivities of composites containing the additive. The conductive additive is prepared by mechanically milling copper powder with carbon nanomaterials, namely, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and/or few-layer graphene (FLG). During the milling process, the carbon nanomaterials are partially embedded in the surfaces of the copper powder, such that electrically conductive pathways are formed when the powder is used in an epoxy-based composite. The conductivities of the composites increase with the volume of the carbon nanomaterial. For a constant volume of carbon nanomaterial, the FLG is observed to provide more conducting pathways than the MWCNTs, although the optimum conductivity is obtained when a mixture of FLG and MWCNTs is used.

  • Using molecular dynamics simulation method, we studied the carbon nanotube (CNT) non-covalently interacting with a polymer. As the polymer coiled around the CNT, the diameter of CNT deformed by more than 40% of its original value within 50 ps. By considering three different polymers, we conclude that the interaction between the CNT and polymer is governed by the number of repeating units in the polymer, not by the molecular weight of polymer.

  • Synthesis of carbon nanomaterials on a substrate coated with metal nitrates using an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame was illustrated. The effects of radial distance, residence time of the substrate, and hydrocarbon composition on the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials were investigated. The effects of catalyst metal particles were also studied using SUS304 substrates coated with Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$ (ferric nitrate, nonahydrate) and Ni(NO$_3$)$_2$(nickel nitrate, hexahydrate), and Cu substrate. Carbon nanomaterials, with diameters ranging from 30 - 70 nm, were observed on the substrate for both cases of using substrates only and using them with metal nitrates. In case of using the substrate with metal nitrates, the formation and growth of carbon nanomaterials were occurred in the lower temperature region than that of using the substrates only due to the easy activation of the metal particles coated on the surface of the substrates.

  • Synthesis of carbon nanomaterials on a metal substrate by an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame was illustrated. Stainless steel plates were used for the catalytic metal substrate. The effects of catalyst metal particles were investigated through $Fe(NO_3){_3}$ (ferric nitrate, nonahydrate) and $Ni(NO_3){_2}$ (nickel nitrate, hexahydrate). Carbon nanotubes and nanofibers with diameters of $30{\sim}70nm$ were found on the substrate for the case of using SUS304 substrates only and using them with metal nitrates. • The study on synthesis of carbon nanomaterials by H2 mixing in counterflow methane diffusion flames has been experimentally conducted. We have also investigated on effect of catalyst and temperature in flame. The counterflow flame was formed by many kind of gas (fuel side using $CH_4-H_2-N_2$ and oxidizer side $N_2-O_2$) and nitrogen shields discharge on each other side to cut off oxidizer of the atmosphere. Ferrocene was used as a metal catalyst for CNTs synthesis. substrate was used to deposit carbon nanomaterials and these were analyzed by FE-SEM. We could find that carbon nanotubes and many kind of carbon nano materials were formed in Cu wire substrate, through this experiment.

  • We present highly transparent liquid crystal displays (LCDs) using hybrid films based on carbon nanomaterials, metal grid, and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) grid. Carbon based nanomaterials are used as transparent electrodes because of high transmittance. Despite of their high transmittance they have relatively high sheet resistance. To solve this problem, we applied grid and made hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials. Conventional photolithography processes were used to make a grid pattern of metal and ITO. To fabricate transparent conductive films, carbon nanotube (CNT) ink was spin coated on the grid pattern. The transparency of the conductive film was controlled by shape and size of the grid pattern and the thickness of CNT films. The optical transmittance of CNT-based hybrid films is 92.2% and sheet resistance is also reduced to $168{\Omega}/square$. These substrates were used for the fabrication of typical twisted nematic (TN) LCD cells. From the characteristics of LCD devices such as transmittance, operating voltage, voltage holding ratio our devices were comparable to those of pristine ITO substrates. The result shows that the hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials could be alternative of ITO for the highly transparent LCDs.

  • Exceptional progress has been made with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of graphene in the past few years. Not only has good monolayer growth of graphene been achieved, but large-area synthesis of graphene sheets has been successful too. However, the polycrystalline nature of CVD graphene is hampering further progress as graphene property degrades due to presence of grain boundaries. This review will cover factors that affect nucleation of graphene and how other scientists sought to obtain large graphene domains. In addition, the limitation of the current research trend will be touched upon as well.

  • There are several well-known materials for the hydrogen storage such as metallic alloy, carbon nanomaterials, non-carbon nanomaterials, and compounds etc. Efficient and inexpensive hydrogen storage methods are an essential prerequisite for the utilization of hydrogen, one of the new and clean energy sources. Many researches have been widely performed for the hydrogen storage techniques and materials to improve the high storage capacity and stability. In this paper, the patents concerning the non-carbon nanomaterial hydrogen storage method were collected and analyzed. The search range was limited in the open patents of Korea(KR), Japan(JP), USA(US) and European Union(EP) from 1996 to 2007. Patents were collected by using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents was analyzed by the years, countries, companies. and technologies.

  • This experiment is to evaluate the physical properties of the hydrogel lens with the addition of carbon-based nanomaterials, Graphene oxide and Carbon nanotube, and to confirm the improvement of strength. Hyaluronic acid, a hydrophilic substance, was used as an additive by using HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a base monomers. Graphene oxide and two types of Carbon nanotubes(Amide functionalized and Carboxilic acid functionalized) were added 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, respectively, and the physical properties were analyzed by measuring water content, refractive index, breaking strength and SEM image. In the case of the sample added with each carbon nano material, the water content tended to increase for all three materials. The breaking strength tended to increase in Graphene oxide and Carbon nanotube; Carboxilic acid functionalized, but in the case of Carbon nanotube; amide fuctionalized, the breaking strength tended to decrease. However, Carbon nanotube; amide fuctionalized had the highest breaking strength among the three nano materials. Thus, the addition of certain carbon nanomaterials seems to be appropriate for improving the strength of hydrogel lenses.
