"Þat louely foode": Relationships between Mothers-and Daughters-in-law in Floris and Blancheflour and the Constance Romances

  • In this essay, I compare the ways in which the mid-thirteenth century English romance, Floris and Blancheflour, represents relationships of the Spanish pagan queen to her adoptive Christian daughter who becomes her daughter-in-law, with the ways in which Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale and other so-called Constance romances delineate relationships between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. What draws me into these romances is the fact that they both convey the intergenerational relationships of women. However, the texts become distinct from each other in the way in which each depicts women characters and their relationships with one another. In this paper, I argue that the level of intimacy that the mother-in-law figure has with the daughter-in-law figure plays a defining role in making the former perform her agency for or against the latter. In the Man of Law's Tale and other Constance romances, the daughter-in-law figure is in every sense an alien or 'outsider' to the mother-in-law figure. To the contrary, Blancheflour in Floris is a sort of 'insider' to the queen because they lived in the same household for fourteen years-ever since the girl's birth. The queen, therefore, should have a high degree of intimacy with Blancheflour. I argue that the pagan queen's intimacy to the daughter of a Christian-European captive has enabled the queen to protect the girl as her adoptive daughter first and as a daughter-in-law second, namely contributing to her unreserved endorsement of the inter-racial-religious-class union between her only son, Floris, and Blancheflour. This is one major factor that distinguishes the relationship of the queen and Blancheflour in Floris from the dysfunctional relationships of mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law in the late medieval Constance romances, where women of different generations are strangers to each other, and no way is imagined for women of different races and religions to get along with each other.

수중운동체의 강제동요시험 및 포텐셜 계산에 의한 부가질량 추정 (Added Mass of Submerged Bodies Obtained by Forced Oscillation Tests and Numerical Calculations of Potential Flow)

  • It is necessary to estimate manoeuvring characteristics of submerged bodies at the design stage in order to ensure the safe operations. In this study, added mass coefficients in the mathematical model of submerged bodies are estimated by captive model tests and numerical calculations. Two kinds of models, MARIN 'BB2'submarine model and AUV (Autonomous unmanned vehicle) model are utilized in the forced oscillation tests. Compared to BB2 submarine, AUV with cylindrical type hull form shows relatively small added masses in roll, pitch, and yaw directions. Next, numerical calculations based on potential theory are performed under the assumption that viscous effects on inertia forces are negligible. Added masses obtained by numerical calculations are in good agreements with forced oscillation test results. And if slow manoeuvres of submerged bodies are presumed, some of velocity coupled terms can be approximated by combinations of added mass coefficients.

Successful Management of Subcutaneous Abscess in a Captive Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius)

  • An 8 month old leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) with a large nodule was referred to our hospital. During the physical examination, the nodule had an unclear boundary from the top of the left eye to the front of the left ear and prevented the opening of the left eye. A hard, cheese-like, yellow, pus-filled nodule was observed. A cytological examination of a pus swab sample revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation with rod-shaped bacteria. Ofloxacin was chosen as the empirical topical antimicrobial drug for treatment. The swab samples were inoculated in trypticase soy agar with 5% sheep blood and incubated at 37℃ for 24 h. Gram-negative bacteria were identified via Gram staining, and the Kirby-Bauer antimicrobial susceptible disk diffusion test against 24 antibiotics according to protocol M100-Ed32 of CLSI showed that the fluoroquinolone group (ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin) was susceptible to the isolated bacteria. Molecular identification based on 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing confirmed that the isolated bacteria had a 99.85% nucleotide similarity with Serratia surfactantfaciens (GenBank accession no. CP014948). After 1 week, the boundaries of the nodule became clear; thus, the abscess was physically removed by expanding the hole formed above the eye for drainage, and flushing was repeated. After another 1 week, new tissue restoration without scarring was observed. This is a rare case report of the successful management of a subcutaneous abscess and scar-free healing in a lizard.

구속모형시험을 통한 잠수함 선형의 수상 조건 조종성능 추정 연구 (Prediction of Maneuverability of a Submarine at Surface Condition by Captive Model Test)

  • In this paper, the results of Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) test for a 1/15 scaled model of the MARIN Joubert BB2 submarine is dealt with to derive the maneuvering coefficients for surface condition. For the depth of surface navigation, the top of the sail was exposed 0.46 m above the water surface in the model scale, and it corresponds to 6.9 m in the full scale. The resistance and self-propulsion tests were conducted, and the model's self-propulsion point was obtained for 1.328 m/s, which corresponded to 10 knots in the full scale. The maneuvering tests were performed at the model's self-propulsion point, and the maneuvering coefficients were obtained. Based on the maneuvering coefficients, a turning simulation was performed for starboard 30 degree of stern fins. The straight-line stability and control effectiveness in the horizontal plane were analyzed using the maneuvering coefficients and compared with the appropriate range. For the analysis of the neutral fin angle of the X-type stern fin, the stern fin test with drift angles was carried out. As a result, the flow straightening effect at lower and upper parts of the stern fin was discussed.

Microsatellite Markers for Non-Invasive Examination of Individual Identity, Genetic Variation, and Population Differentiation in Two Populations of Korean Long-Tailed Goral (Naemorhedus caudatus)

  • Natural habitats of the Korean long-tailed goral (Naemorhedus caudatus) have been fragmented by anthropogenic activities in South Korea in the last decades. Here, the individual identity, genetic variation, and population differentiation of the endangered species were examined via the multiple-tube approach using a non-invasive genotyping method. The average number of alleles was 3.16 alleles/locus for the total population. The Yanggu population (1.66) showed relatively lower average number of alleles than the Inje population (3.67). Of the total 19 alleles, only seven (36.8%) alleles were shared by the two populations. Using five polymorphic out of six loci, four and six different goral individuals from the captive Yanggu (n=24) and the wild Inje (n=28) population were identified, respectively. The allele distribution was not identical between the two populations (Fisher's exact test: P<0.01). A considerably low migration rate was detected between the two populations (no. of migrants after correction for size=0.294). Additionally, the F statistics results indicated significant population differentiation between them, however, quite low (FST=0.327, P<0.01). The posterior probabilities indicated that the two populations originated from a single panmictic population (P=0.959) and the assignment test results designated all individuals to both populations with nearly equal likelihood. These could be resulted from moderate population differentiation between the populations. No significant evidence supported recent population bottleneck in the total Korean goral population. This study could provide us with useful population genetic information for conservation and management of the endangered species.

Changes in the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Ships During Port Maneuvers

  • To reach a port, a ship must pass through a shallow water zone where seabed effects alter the hydrodynamics acting on the ship. This study examined the maneuvering characteristics of an autonomous surface ship at 3-DOF (Degree of freedom) motion in deep water and shallow water based on the in-port speed of 1.54 m/s. The CFD (Computational fluid dynamics) method was used as a specialized tool in naval hydrodynamics based on the RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke) solver for maneuvering prediction. A virtual captive model test in CFD with various constrained motions, such as static drift, circular motion, and combined circular motion with drift, was performed to determine the hydrodynamic forces and moments of the ship. In addition, a model test was performed in a square tank for a static drift test in deep water to verify the accuracy of the CFD method by comparing the hydrodynamic forces and moments. The results showed changes in hydrodynamic forces and moments in deep and shallow water, with the latter increasing dramatically in very shallow water. The velocity fields demonstrated an increasing change in velocity as water became shallower. The least-squares method was applied to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients by distinguishing a linear and non-linear model of the hydrodynamic force models. The course stability, maneuverability, and collision avoidance ability were evaluated from the estimated hydrodynamic coefficients. The hydrodynamic characteristics showed that the course stability improved in extremely shallow water. The maneuverability was satisfied with IMO (2002) except for extremely shallow water, and collision avoidance ability was a good performance in deep and shallow water.

Genome-wide SNP analysis provides insights into the XX/XY sex-determination system in silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus)

  • Silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) is among the most economically important freshwater fish species in Thailand. It ranks fourth in economic value and third in production weight for fisheries and culture in Thailand. An XX/XY sex-determination system based on gynogenesis was previously reported for this fish. In this study, the molecular basis underlying the sex-determination system was further investigated. Genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism data were generated for 32 captive-bred silver barb individuals, previously scored by phenotypic sex, to identify sex-linked regions associated with sex determination. Sixty-three male-linked loci, indicating putative XY chromosomes, were identified. Male-specific loci were not observed, which indicates that the putative Y chromosome is young and the sex determination region is cryptic. A homology search revealed that most male-linked loci were homologous to the Mariner/Tc1 and Gypsy transposable elements and are probably the remnants of an initial accumulation of repeats on the Y chromosome from the early stages of sex chromosome differentiation. This research provides convincing insights into the mechanism of sex determination and reveals the potential sex determination regions in silver barb. The study provides the basic data necessary for increasing the commercial value of silver barbs through genetic improvements.

건강한 너구리(Nyctereutes procyonoides)들의 심전계 지표에 대한 평가 (Evaluation of Electrocardiographic Index in Healthy Raccoon Dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides))

  • 포획된 건강한 너구리들의 심전도의 기준값을 평가하는 것이 본 논문의 주된 목적이다. 41마리의 방목되고 있는 다 자란 너구리들이 강원대학교 야생동물구조센터에 의해 구조되었으며 본 논문에 이용되었다. 어떠한 화학적 보정도 사용하지 않고 6-유도 심전도를 측정하였다. 평균 심박수는 $146.10{\pm}43.31$ 박동수/분 이었다(95% 신뢰구간 132.84~159.36 박동수/분). 평균 호흡수는 $35.73{\pm}11.56$ 호흡수/분 이었다(95% 신뢰구간 32.19~39.27 호흡수/분). 평균 수축기 압력은 $136{\pm}29.26mmHg$ 이었다(95% 신뢰구간 127.99~145.91 mmHg). 모든 너구리들의 심전계의 특징들을 또한 평가하였다. P-파의 평균 너비와 높이는 $38.2{\pm}4.0ms$ (범위 28-40 ms) 와 $0.128{\pm}0.039mV$ (범위 0.09~0.20)이었다. QRS파의 평균 너비와 높이는 $48.5{\pm}7.2ms$ (범위 36-60 ms) 와 $1.330{\pm}0.650mV$ (범위 0.15~2.30)이었다. 평균전기축 (QRS)은 $-91^{\circ}{\sim}+96^{\circ}$ ($10^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}$; 95% 신뢰구간)이었다. 평균 교정 QT 간격(QTc)은 $273.7{\pm}32.7ms$ (범위 212-333 ms)이었고, PR간격은 $76.1{\pm}10.0ms$ (범위 50-82 ms)이었다. 본 논문은 포획된 건강한 너구리들의 심전도(ECG)의 기준값을 제공하는 최초의 논문이다.

제주도에 이입된 황소개구리(Rana catesbeiana)와 붉은귀거북(Trachemys scripta elegans)의 서식실태 및 관리방안 (Current Conditions of Habitat for Rana catesbeiana and Trachemys scripta elegans Imported to Jeju-do, Including Proposed Management Plans)

  • 본 연구는 제주도에 이입된 황소개구리와 붉은귀거북의 분포현황과 서식실태를 파악하여 외래동물에 대한 데이터베이스 구축에 필요한 생물상 현황에 대한 기초자료를 확보하고 제주지 역에 적용 가능한 관리방안을 마련하고자 2005년 3월부터 2006년 5월까지 이루어졌다. 조사결과, 제주도내 황소개구리는 한경면, 대정읍, 안덕면 지역에 분포하는 것으로 나타났다. 제주도 서부지 역은 황소개구리의 서식 조건이 양호하여 쉽게 개체수가 감소하지 않을 것으로 생각되며, 다른 지역으로의 확산도 우려될 뿐만 아니라 토착 곤충류, 어류, 양서류, 파충류 등에 대한 피해가 예측되어 구제되어야 할 것이다. 그리고 붉은귀거북은 제주도내 15개소의 연못에서 92개체이상 서식하는 것으로 나타났다. 붉은귀거북은 최상위 포식자로서 연못의 생태계 파괴와 배설물에 의한 수질오염 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 붉은귀거북의 관리방안으로는 방생 자제 홍보, 생태적 습성을 이용한 퇴치방안, 인위적 확산을 막기 위해 다소 많은 개체가 서식하고 사람들의 왕래가 많은 서식지에는 위해성에 대한 홍보판 설치와 더불어 지속적인 관리가 따라야 할 것이다.

양미리를 급여한 사육 황새에서 ${\beta}$-글로불린 분획의 증가 (Increased ${\beta}$-globulin Levels in Captive Oriental White Storks Fed a Diet of Sand Eels)

  • 이 연구는 사육황새에 급여하는 먹이(양미리와 전갱이)의 차이에 따른 혈청 단백질 분획의 변화를 평가하기 위한 것이다. 사육황새를 먹이에 따라 두 그룹(그룹 1과 2)으로 나누어 연구를 진행하였다. 그룹 1에는 22마리, 그룹 2에는 29마리의 황새가 포함되었고, 각각 양미리와 전갱이를 급여하였다. 두 그룹에서 전혈구검사, 혈청화학검사, 단백질분획검사(${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$- 및 ${\gamma}$-글로불린) 및 지단백질 분획검사(HDL 및 LDL)를 진행하고 결과를 비교하였다. 검사 결과 그룹 1에서 ${\alpha}$-글로불린의 감소와 ${\beta}$-글로불린의 증가가 유의적으로 관찰되었다. 그룹 1에서 LDL의 농도는 그룹 2에 비해 유의적으로 증가하였다. 결과적으로 양미리를 급여한 사육황새에서 ${\beta}$-글로불린의 증가가 LDL의 증가에 의한 것임을 확인하였다.
