  • This paper presents a simple thermo-physical model of reciprocating compressors for household refrigerator-freezers. The compressor model has been developed based on thermodynamic principles and large data sets from the compressor calorimeter tests. The input data are compressor geometry (displacement and clearance volume), compressor speed, suction pressure and temperature, discharge pressure, and ambient temperature. The model can estimate mass flow rate and compressor power consumption within 3.0% accuracy, which is not much larger than measurement errors associated with calorimeter testing under ideal conditions.

  • Composite materials were used widely due to merit of light weight, low maintenance cost and easy installation. But it is the cause of enormous casualties to men and properties because of weak about the fire. Particularly, it is more serious in case of subway train installed composite materials. For this reason, experimental comparison has been done fur measuring heat release rate(H.R.R) and smoke production rate(S.P.R) of interior panels of electric motor car using cone calorimeter. A high radiative heat flux of 50kW/㎡ was used to bum out all materials and to simulate the condition of fully developed fire case in the tests. It was observed that Heat Release Rate and Smoke Production Rate curves were dependent on the kinds of the interior materials. From the heat release rate curves, the sustained ignition time, peak heat release rate and total heat release rate were deduced, These data are useful in classifying the materials by calculating two parameters describing the possibility to flashover.

  • Cetostearyl alcohol has been incorporated into cosmetic or pharmaceutial emulsions to give them an appropriate consistency and a long term stability. It is well known that cetostearyl alcohol forms a gel phase with a nonionic surfactant in an aqueous system, and the properties of the gel phase depend on several factors such as the ratio of fatty alcohols. The aim of the present Paper is to investigate the effect of the structural difference of the lipophilic part of surfactants on the stability of the gel phase in the nonionic surfactant / cetostearyl alcohol / water ternary systems using differential scanning calorimeter. It is concluded that the gel phase formed by the surfactant having the bended alkyl chain is more unstable than that formed by the case of the straight alkyl chain, and we discussed the reason why the former is more unstable after long term storage by means of the measurements of the ${\Delta}$H.

  • It is necessary to calculate Apparent Activation Energy(Ea) in order to apply the equivalent age formula to predict compressive strength using the maturity method. For carbon reduction, it is necessary to consider the change of Ea by condition of GGBFS concrete, which is widely used today. In this study, as a basic study for the design of the compressive strength model of GGBFS concrete, the apparent activation energy of the GGBFS mixed paste was calculated through a calorimeter. The experiment was carried out at a hydration temperature of 10 to 30℃ with a paste test specimen having a GGBFS content of 0 to 80%. As a result, the GGBFS replacement rate of the paste increased, and Ea tended to increase as the temperature decreased.

  • Since the start of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) project, Instrumentation and Control (I&C) of the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NB-TF) has been striving to answer diverse requests arising from various facets during the project's development and construction phases. Hard-wired electrical circuits have been designed, tested, fabricated, and finally installed to the relevant parts of the system. In relation to the vacuum system I&C, controlling functions for the rotary pumps, a Roots pump, two turbomolecular pumps, and four cryosorption pumps have been constructed. I&C for the ion source operation are the temperature and flow rate signal monitoring, Langmuir probe signal measurements, gradient grid current measurements, and arc detector circuit. For the huge power system to be monitored or safely operated, many temperature measurement functions have also been implemented for the beam line components like the neutralizer, bending magnet, ion dump, and calorimeter. Nearly all of the control and probe signals between the NB test stand and the control room were made to be transmitted through the optical cables. Failures of coolant flow or beam line vacuum pressure were made to be safely blocked from influencing the system by an appropriate interlock circuit that will shut down the extraction voltage application to the system or prevent damages to the vacuum components. Preliminary estimation of the beam power through the calorimetric measurement shows that 87.9% of the total power of the 60kV/18A beam with 200 seconds duration is absorbed by the calorimeter surface. Most of these I&C results would be highly appropriate for the construction of the main NBI facility for the KSTAR national fusion research project.

  • Combustion characteristics of outdoor advertisement materials were evaluated for fire risk assessment about fire expanding. At this study, the flame retardancy and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) was measured by UL 94 and ASTM D 2863 respectively. At the result of flame retardancy, foamex was V-0 grade and those of others were out of grade. LOI measurement showed that the LOI of foamex was highest in the samples. The cone calorimeter test was done by ISO 5660-1 to find the combustion characteristics. The cone calorimeter test showed that the outdoor advertisement materials were not good to prevent of fire expanding. The time to ignition (TTI) of flex was the fastest and the peak heat release rate (PHRR) as well as the total heat release (THR) of acrylic panel was higher than those of others.

  • The time to ignition, heat release rate characteristics, and carbon monoxide yield of fiber reinforced and sandwich phenol resin were investigated with cone calorimeter. The fire characteristics of unsaturated polyester, mostly being applied to the existing passenger train, and phenolic resin were compared. DSC & TGA was used to monitor the degree of thermal decomposition and weight loss for the phenolic resin. According to the cone calorimeter data, the time to ignition was shorter, heat release rate, and CO yield was higher as the external heat flux increased. Under the same heat flux, the time to ignition of sandwich type phenolic resin was shorter than that of laminated. The result of comparison between unsaturated polyester and phenolic resin was that phenolic resin was shown to have better fire resistance than unsaturated polyester.

  • The purposes of this study were to measure the resting metabolic rate(RMR) of 30-40 year old women and to compare it with values predicted using published equations. Body weight, height and body fat of subjects were measured. RMR was measured by two indirect calorimeter(method 1 and method 2). RMR was predicted using various equations. Average height, weight and body fat(%) of subjects were 158.6cm, 59.1kg and 30.9%, respectively. The RMR(1621.2$\pm$301.5 kcal/day) measured by portable indirect calorimeter(method 2) was significantly higher than RMR(1447.4$\pm$223.6 kcal/day) measured by typical indirect calorimeter(method 1). Comparison of measured RMR with predicted RMRs suggested that there was a least difference in RMR predicted by equation of Cunningham. According to RMSPEs(Root Mean Squared Prediction Errors), equations of Cunningham and body surface area were found to predict measured RMR(by method 1) most accurately (within 239.1kcal/day and 232.9kcal/day, respectively). The fat free mass and fat mass - adjusted correlation showed that measured RMR(by method 1) had negative relationships with muscle mass(r = -0.873) and fat free mass(r = -0.866). The equations of Cunningham and body surface area provide relatively accurate estimates of RMR when determining energy needs of 30-40 aged women. There are needs for development of RMR predicted equations that are derived from large samples of Korean.
