The bio-mediated production of calcite crystals by calcinogenic bacteria has great applicable value for the restoration of deteriorated calcareous monuments, because of its high purity and coherency. An investigation of the conditions for calcite production by an alkalophilic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CMB01 strain was made. Optimal calcite precipitation occurred when the bacterium was cultured at pH 8.0 and 30$^{\circ}C$, and in B4 medium that consisted of 0.4% yeast extract, 0.5% glucose, and 1.5% calcium acetate. Calcium ion of the bacterially induced calcite was analyzed by an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrophotometer. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the calcite revealed a typical rombohedral polycrystalline structure.
In this study, the feasibility of introducing calcite-forming bacteria into concrete pavements to improve their mechanical performance was investigated. Lysinibacillus sphaericus WJ-8, which was isolated in a previous study and is capable of exhibiting high urease activity and calcite production, was used. When analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction, WJ-8 showed a significant amount of calcite precipitation. The compressive strength of cement mortar mixed with WJ-8 cells and nutrient medium (urea with calcium lactate) increased by 10% compared with that of the controls. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analyses confirmed that the increase in strength was due to the calcite formed by the WJ-8 cells.
The physical method used to prevent a landslide has the risk of environmental pollution. Calcite forming bacteria (CFB) have been received increasing attention as a novel and environmental friendly strategy for the soil improvement. In this study, we selected 11 CFB strains with high calcite production. We also examined survivability and calcite productivity of the strains under various stress conditions to select strains with high resistance to various stresses. Two strains was selected by environment stress. Sphingobacterium sp. KJ-32 and Viridibacillus arenosi B-25 precipitate calcite more than other strains at pH 5 and $15^{\circ}C$ respectively. Bio-consolidated soil cakes were made using various calcium salts (calcium chloride, calcium acetate, calcium lactate, calcium gluconate) with mixed culture of 2 strains. Among them, the calcite made using calcium chloride was the largest. These observations demonstrate that this bio-consolidation technology has the potential for eco-friendly prevention of landslide and soil improvement.

Two bacterial strains designated as CT2 and CT5 were isolated from highly alkaline cement samples using the enrichment culture technique. On the basis of various physiological tests and 16S rRNA sequence analysis, the bacteria were identified as Bacillus species. The urease production was 575.87 U/ml and 670.71 U/ml for CT2 and CT5, respectively. Calcite constituted 27.6% and 31% of the total weight of sand samples plugged by CT2 and CT5, respectively. Scanning electron micrography analysis revealed the direct involvement of these isolates in calcite precipitation. This is the first report of the isolation and identification of Bacillus species from cement. Based on the ability of these bacteria to tolerate the extreme environment of cement, they have potential to be used in remediating the cracks and fissures in various building or concrete structures.

In the cement industry, in order to reduce CO2 emissions, technology for raw materials substitution and conversion, technology for improving process efficiency of utilizing low-carbon new heat sources, and technology for collecting and recycling process-generated CO2 are being developed. In this study, we conducted a basic experiment to contribute to the development of CSC that can store CO2 as carbonate minerals among process-generated CO2 capture and recycling technologies. Three types of CSC clinker with different SiO2/(CaO+SiO2) molar ratios were prepared with the clinker raw material formulation, and the characteristics of the clinker were analyzed. As a result of analysis and observation of CSC clinker, wollastonite and rankinite were formed. In addition, as a result of the carbonation test of the CSC paste, it was confirmed that calcite was produced as a carbonation product. The lower the SiO2/(CaO+SiO2) molar ratio in the CSC clinker chemical composition, the lower the wollastonite production amount, and the higher the rankinite production amount. And the amount of calcite production increased with the progress of carbonation of the CSC paste specimen. It is judged that rankinite is more reactive in mineralizing CO2 than wollastonite.
Emiliania huxleyi (a haptophyte) is the most abundant coccolithophore species that produces delicate calcite scales called coccoliths. In this study, we identified several candidate genes associated with coccolith production by comparing the transcriptomes of the calcifying (CCMP 371) and non-calcifying (CCMP 2090) strains of E. huxleyi. Among the candidates, genes highly expressed in CCMP 371 were identified. To confirm whether these genes are associated with calcification, we modulated coccolith production in CCMP 371 by culturing it at different calcium concentrations. At an ambient (10 mM) concentration of calcium in the growth medium, CCMP 371 sustained its calcifying ability. However, at a low (0.1 mM) concentration or absence of calcium, there was no calcite formation, demonstrating that calcium-limiting conditions negatively affect calcification. We also evaluated the expression patterns of the putative genes in cells grown at different calcium concentrations by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. In addition, we showed that the growth rate of cells cultured under calcium-limiting conditions does not differ from that under ambient conditions. Further studies are required to investigate the roles of the putative calcification-associated genes at the molecular level.
The experiments to produce the vaterite type calcium carbonate were conducted for using the waste oyster shell as the recycling resources. Firstly, the oyster shell were calcinated at 800 ℃ for 24 h. Calcinated oyster shell were reacted with the nitric acid solution, and were diluted to 0.1 M Ca(NO3)2 solution. This solution was mixed with 0.1 M Na2CO3 contained 0.1 mol lysine/1 mol CaO at 20 ℃ and 600 rpm mixing condition for 1 h. The reaction products were identified to vaterite type calcium carbonate (84.5% vaterite, 15.5% calcite) by XRD and SEM analysis. Mean particle diameter was 6.87 ㎛, and the lysine content in calcium carbonate was analyzed to 0.1%.

In this study, the waste concrete sample obtained as various particle size (0~2.36 mm) was carried out the basic measurements and carbonation for analyzing the possibility of its carbonation. It was then investigated some analysis such as crystallization (XRD pattern), microstructure (SEM), and the production of CaCO3 through the ignition loss (TG-DTA). The content of CaCO3 in the waste concrete sample before carbonation was found in 14.51 % and 28.52 % after carbonation in 24 hours. Moreover, the content of CaCO3 carbonated in 24 hours with fine grinded waste concrete sample was 32.73 %. The carbonation of the waste concrete sample was rapidly performed up to 6 hours, but gradually increased from 12 to 24 hours. Especially, the amount of CaCO3 between 12 and 24 hours was only produced 2.32 %. The calcite-shaped CaCO3 crystals after carbonation of the waste concrete sample were found in microstructure and their peaks were strongly detected on XRD pattern.

This study aimed to identify plant growth-promoting activity, phytopathogenic fungi growth inhibitory activity, mineral solubilization ability, and extracellular enzyme activity of the genus Bacillus in soil and the rhizosphere. With regards to antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi, DDP257 showed antifungal activity against all 10 pathogenic fungi tested. ANG20 showed the highest ability to produce indole-3-acetic acid, a plant growth-promoting factor (70.97 ㎍/ml). In addition, 10 species were identified to have 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase production ability, and most isolates showed nitrogen fixation and siderophore production abilities. Thereafter, the isolated strains' ability to solubilize minerals such as phosphate, calcite, and zinc was identified. With extracellular enzyme activity, the activity appeared in most enzymes. In particular, all the strains showed similar abilities for alkaline phosphatase, esterase (C4), acid phosphatase, and naphtol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase production. This result was observed because the genus Bacillus secreted various organic substances, antibiotics, and extracellular enzymes. Therefore, through the results of this study, we suggest the possibility of using strains contributing to the improvement of the soil environment as microbial agents.

Residual calcium concentration is high, in general, at the effluent of the fluoride removal process in the electronics industry manufacturing semiconductor and LCD. To increase the stability of the membrane process incorporated for reuse of wastewater, the residual calcium is required to be pre-removed. Hyperkinetic Vortex Crystallization(HVC) process was installed in the electronics industry manufecturing semi conductor as a pilot scale for accelerating calcification of calcium ion. Compared to the conventional soda ash method, the 31% higher calcium removal efficiency was achieved when HVC was applied at the same sodium carbonate dosage. In order to maintain the economic calcium removal target of 70% preset by manufacturer, the dosing concentration of the soda ash was 530 mg/L based on influent flowrate. The seed concentration in the reactor was one of the critical factors and should be maintained in the range of $800\sim1,200mg$ SS/L to maximize the calcium removal efficiency. The calcite production rate was 0.30 g SS/g $Na_2CO_3$ in the average. The economic HVC passing time of the mixture was in the range of $2\sim5$ times. Relatively, stable calcium concentration was maintained in the range of $30\sim72$ mg/L(average 49 mg/L) although the calcium concentration in the feed was severely fluctuated with $74\sim359$ mg/L(average 173 mg/L). The HVC process was characterized as environment-friendly technology reducing chemical dosage and chemical sludge production and minimizing maintenance cost.
