  • Alumina composite membranes were prepared by chemical vapor deposition and evaporation-oxidation process. For CVD process, deposition was carried out using aluminum-tri-isopropoxide at 35$0^{\circ}C$, 2 torr by heterogeneous reaction, and for evaporation-oxidation process, alumina composite membranes were prepared by evaporation of aluminum and dry oxidation at 80$0^{\circ}C$. As deposition time increases, water flux and N2 gas permeability of the composite membranes prepared by both processes were reduced. Applying gas permeation model, permeability and cracking possibility of top layer were evaluated.

  • This paper compares and analyzes and analyzes the transmission performance of the OpenCable system and the DBD-C system which are adopted as the digital CATV transmission standard in U.S.A. and Europe respectively through computer simulation under the same channel environment. We considered the channel environment including the random noise and the CTB (Composite Tripple Beats) noise as channel impairments in order to compare the two standard fairly. Additionally, we analyzed the transmission performance of the OpenCable system for the various interleaving depths. We implemented each transmission system by software, and we analyzed BER values with respect to the C/N in order to compare their transmission performance. As a result of the computer simulation, to get the BER of ${10}^{-6}$ the OpenCable system requires 1.2 dB kiwer C/N than the DVB-C system in the 64-QAM mode, and the two system require similar C/N in the 256-QAM mode.

  • Ni-C composite films were prepared by co-deposition using a combined technique of plasma CVD and ion beam sputtering deposition. Depending on the deposition conditions, Ni-C thin films manifested three kinds of microstructure: (1) nanocrystallites of non-equilibrium carbide of nickel, (2) amorphous Ni-C film, and (3) granular Ni-C film. The electrical resistivity was also found to vary from about $10^2{\mu}{\Omega}cm$ for the carbide films to about $10^4{\mu}{\Omega}cm$ for the amorphous Ni-C films. The Ni-C films deposited at ambient temperatures showed very low TCR values compared with that of metallic nickel film, and all the films showed ohmic characterization, even those in the amorphous state with very high resistivity. The TCR value decreased slightly with increasing of the flow rate of $CH_4$. For the films deposited at $200^{\circ}C$, TCR decreased with increasing $CH_4$ flow rate; especially, it changed sign from positive to negative at a $CH_4$ flow rate of 0.35 sccm. By increasing the $CH_4$ flow rate, the amorphous component in the film increased; thus, the portion of $Ni_3C$ grains separated from each other became larger, and the contribution to electrical conductivity due to thermally activated tunneling became dominant. This also accounts for the sign change of TCR when the filme was deposited at higher flow rate of $CH_4$. The microstructures of the Ni-C films deposited in these ways range from amorphous Ni-C alloy to granular structures with $Ni_3C$ nanocrystallites. These films are characterized by high resistivity and low TCR values; the electrical properties can be adjusted over a wide range by controlling the microstructures and compositions of the films.

  • The effect of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ additives on the microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites by pressureless sintering were investigated. The ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ ceramic composites were pressureless sintered by adding 4, 8, 12wt.% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ powder as a liquid forming additives at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed mostly of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $ZrB_2$ and weakly $\alpha$-SiC(4H), $\beta$-SiC(15R) phase. The relative density of composites was lowered by gaseous products of the result of reaction between $\beta$-SiC and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ therefore, porosity was increased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents. The fracture toughness of composites was decreased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents, and showed the maximum value of $1.4197MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composite added with 4wt.% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ additives. The electrical resistivity of ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composite was increased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents, and showed positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this work is to optimize composition of mixture refrigerants used in the C3MR (Propane & Mixed Refrigerants) process by a statistical optimization technique. C3MR studied in this work is one of widely used commercial natural gas liquefaction processes with high efficiency. Process simulation was performed in a commercial process simulator and methane ($C_1$), ethane ($C_2$), propane ($C_3$), and nitrogen ($N_2$) were selected as mixed refrigerants. Using the process model, optimum composition of refrigerants mixture was determined via mixture design and central composite design to produce minimum energy consumption. As a result, it was confirmed that energy consumption is reduced down to 11.3% comparing to existing design. It was also compared with heat effectiveness through temperature profile of MCHE (main cryogenic heat exchanger).

  • In order to limit the temperature rise of the structure to a certain level or less while maintaining the aerodynamic shape of solid rocket nozzle by effectively blocking a large amount of heat introduced by the combustion gas of high temperature and high pressure, the heat-resistant materials such as C/C composite having excellent ablation resistance are applied to a position in contact with the combustion gas, and the heat-insulating materials having a low thermal diffusivity are applied to the backside thereof. SiC/SiC composite, which has excellent oxidation resistance, is applied to gas turbine engines and contributes to increase engine performance due to light weight and heat-resistant improvement. Scramjet, flying at hypersonic speed, has been studying the development of C/SiC structures using the endothermic fuel as a coolant because the intake air temperature is very high. In this paper, characteristics, application examples, and development trends of various heat-resistant composites used in solid rocket nozzles, gas turbine engines, and ramjet/scramjet propulsions were discussed.

  • SiC composite materials are usually used to very high temperature condition such as thermal protection system materials at space vehicles, combustion chambers or engine nozzles because they have high specific strength and good thermal properties at high temperature. One of the most widely used fabrication methods of SiC composites is the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process. During the process, chemical gases including Si are introduced into porous preform which is made by carbon fibers for infiltration. Since the processes take a very long time, it is important to reduce the process time in designing the reactors and processes. In this study, both the gas flow and heat transfer in the reactors during the processes are analyzed using a computational fluid dynamics method in order to design reactors and processes for uniform, high quality SiC composites. Effects of flow rate and heater temperature as process parameters to the infiltration process were examined.
