  • Applicability and economical feasibility of a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) have been investigated using the PSS/E simulation for a bus bar coupling at the real 154 ㎸ KEPCO power grid near Seoul. For the investigated substation, the maximum fault current exceeds the interruption rating of 4 circuit breakers (CB) out of 9 installed in the substation. The simulation showed that a SFCL installed in the bus tie position effectively limits the fault currents to save 4 CBs, which are to be replaced by ones of gloater interruption rating, otherwise. We suggest that the optimum resistance of the SFCL be 10 Ohm for the given grid.

  • As power systems grow more complex and power demands increase, the fault current tends to gradually increase. In the near future, the fault current will exceed a circuit breaker rating for some substations, which is an especially important issue in the Seoul metropolitan area because of its highly meshed configuration. Currently, the Korean power system is regulated by changing the 154kV system configuration from a loop connection to a radial system, by splitting the bus where load balance can be achieved, and by upgrading the circuit breaker rating. A development project applying 154kV Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) to 154kV transmission systems is proceeding with implementation slated for after 2010. In this paper, SFCL is applied to reduce the fault current in power systems according to two different application schemes and their technical impacts are evaluated. The results indicate that both application schemes can regulate the fault current under the rating of circuit breaker, however, applying SFCL to the bus-tie location is much more appropriate from an economic view point.

  • In the power plant using high temperature fuel cells such as Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC), and Solid Oxide Fuel Cell(SOFC), the generated electric power per area of power generation facilities is much higher than any other renewable energy sources. - High temperature fuel cell systems are capable of operating at MW rated power output. - It also has a feature that is short for length of the line for connecting the interior of the generation facilities. In normal condition, these points are advantages for voltage drops or power losses. However, in abnormal condition such as fault occurrence in electrical system, the fault currents are increased, because of the small impedance of the short length of power cable. Commonly, to minimize the thermal-mechanical stresses on the stack and increase the systems reliability, we divided the power plant configuration to several banks for parallel operation. However, when a fault occurs in the parallel operation system of power main transformer, the fault currents might exceed the interruption capacity of protective devices. In fact, although the internal voltage level of the fuel cell power plant is the voltage level of distribution systems, we should install the circuit breakers for transmission systems due to fault current. To resolve these problems, the SFCL has been studied as one of the noticeable devices. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of application of the SFCL on bus tie in a fuel cell power plants system using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • This paper addresses the issues of the external system modeling and power system state estimation with the external model. A set of significant branches is identified in the external system based on their branch outage sensitivities on the tie-lines. Measurements on these branches are transffered to internal system and updated in real-time. The state estimator is run for different loading conditions by using the actual measurements for the internal system and selected significant external system measurements while keeping the rest of the external system measurements at their base case values. Simulation results are presented using the IEEE 118 bus system as an example.

All Korean 154kV power systems are constructed as loop systems in downtown. However, the present 154kV systems are operated with separated systems around 345kV S/S because of fault current and overload problems. In this study, we investigate the structure and operation of 154kV power system in Seoul and study the feasibility of interconnection operation of 154kV systems under 345kV systmes by applying SFCLs to 154kV bus-tie.

  • This paper presents a method for the determination of total transfer capability in interconnected power systems, which is based on sequential quadratic programming (SQP). The objective function is the maximization of the interconnected line flow. To calculate TTC the control variables are the active power of the generating units, the voltage magnitude of the generator, transformer tap settings and SVC setting. The state variables are the bus voltage magnitude, the reactive power of the generating unit, line flows and the tie line flow. The method proposed is applied to the modified IEEE 14 buses model system.

  • As the load density of KEPCO system is higher, the fault current can be much higher than SCC(Short Circuit Capacity) of circuit breaker. Fault current exceeding the rating of circuit breaker is a very serious problem in high density load area, which can threaten the stability of whole power system. Even though there are several alternatives to reduce fault current, as the superconductivity technology has been developed, the HTS-FCL (High Temperature Superconductivity Fault Current Limiter) can be one of the attractive alternatives to solve the fault current problem. This study presents the application plication of 154kV HTS-FCL in Korean power system.
