Comparative analyses of a shield building subjected to a large commercial aircraft impact between decoupling method and coupling method

  • Comparative analyses of a shield building subjected to a large commercial aircraft impact between decoupling method and coupling method are performed in this paper. The decoupling method is applying impact force time-history curves on impact area of the shield building to study impact damage effects on structure. The coupling method is using a model including aircraft and shield building to perform simulation of the entire impact process. Impact force time-history curves of the fuselage, wing and engine and their total impact force time-history curve are obtained by the entire aircraft normally impacting the rigid wall. Taking aircraft structure and impact progress into account some loading areas are determined to perform some comparative analyses between decoupling method and coupling method, the calculation results including displacement, plastic strain of concrete and stress of steel plate in impact area are given. If the loading area is determined unreasonably, it will be difficult to assess impact damage of impact area even though the accurate impact force of each part of aircraft obtained already. The coupling method presented at last in this paper can more reasonably evaluate the dynamic response of the shield building than the decoupling methods used in the current nuclear engineering design.

  • This study is intended to identify how quick disconnect coupling which connects with refrigerant piping of air-conditioner using R-22 refrigerant has effect on characteristics of flux. in the case where the air-conditioner installs utilizes quick disconnect coupling, COP has an effect on the quantity of cooling load because of changing flow rate and physical properties of refrigerant which flow into an entrance of expansion valve from coupling. Variation of flow rate can be regulated by changing expansion-contraction angle; $\alpha$ of an entrance and an exit of coupling.   • Control of structural response due to seismic excitation in a manner of coupling adjacent buildings has been actively developed, and most attention focused on those buildings of similar height. However, with the rapid development of some modern cities, multi-story buildings constructed with an auxiliary low-rise podium structure to provide extra functions to the complex become a growing construction scheme. Being inspired by the positively examined coupling control approach for buildings with similar height, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive analytical study on control effectiveness of using friction dampers to link the two buildings with significant height difference to supplement the recent experimental investigation carried out by the writers. The analytical model of a coupled building system is first developed with passive friction dampers being modeled as Coulomb friction. To highlight potential advantage of coupling the main building and podium structure with control devices that provide a lower degree of coupling, the inherent demerit of rigid-coupled configuration is then evaluated. Extensive parametric studies are finally performed. The concerned parameters influencing the design of optimal friction force and control efficiency include variety of earthquake excitation and differences in floor mass, story number as well as number of dampers installed between the two buildings. In general, the feasibility of interaction control approach applied to the complex structure for vibration reduction due to seismic excitation is supported by positive results.

  • This study analyzed operation characteristics of air-condition piping is made by quick disconnect coupling. Air-conditioning consists of central compressor 3HP capacity and R22 refrigerant. We experimented with two operation cycles of air-condition under the same environment; one is with quick disconnect coupling. The other is without quick disconnect coupling. As a result, we can observe whether the condensation temperature of former increased by about 3-5. Furthermore, COP decreased by about 10%.

  • Reinforcing bar coupling method has a variety of ways including lap-splice method. However, there are problems that need to be improved in terms of constructability, economics analysis. We should be improved about the problems of the existing methods. Accordingly, this study were developed a new type of staggered grip type reinforcing bar coupling. The proposed method show the following effects than existing methods. First, this method can be reduce time through improved workability. Second, increasing safety through the slip removal. Third, improving economic efficiency by reduce the manufacturing costs.

  • Building energy saving is one of the most important issues in these days. Control algorithm for energy saving should be designed properly to reduce power consumption in building. Recently, building energy system consists of hybrid energy system coupling with RE (Renewable Energy) source. In this paper, an optimum control algorithm for building energy saving is applied to BEMS (Building Energy Management System) by using an outdoor air temperature prediction strategy. BEMS coupling with renewable energy can control HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning) system effectively. In order to verify the effectiveness of building energy saving, BEMS was tested for several months at a laboratorial chamber with an air conditioner, fan and heater. To this end BEMS embedded control algorithm has been tested successfully.

  • This paper focuses on how the coupling of the columns and walls through the structural slab contributes to the overall stiffness and strength of lateral systems. The rationale and procedures behind the design approach, which may offer a shift from more conventional assumptions made regarding compatibility and connectivity of gravity and lateral structural systems, will be introduced. The impacts on serviceability and strength design will be discussed, and observations on key design and analysis approaches will be featured. Mass and stiffness assumptions will also be reviewed. A case study on the topic will be presented describing implementation of slab coupling into engineering of a building project.

  • For decreasing of the casualties and designing of the smoke control systems in the ultra high-rise building, the programs for analysis of smoke control were developed for prediction of smoke spread and distributions of pressure and temperature in building fire situation. In this study, coupling algorithm between mass and enthalpy conservations was modified for improving the applicability of the CAU_ESCAP which program can consider the energy transfer. The fire situation in ultra high-rise building was applied by using the modified CAU_ESCAP. Results of pressure difference predicted by modified CAU_ESCAP are higher than results of ASCOS as stack effect is generated due to the increasing of stairway temperature. Moreover, theoretically, the result of the neutral plane is more accurate than the result of ASCOS, in fire situation of ultra high-rise building.

Effect on the Physical Performance of Functionalized Silane Coupling Agent on Epoxy-Based Concrete Surface Finishing Material for Parking Floor (기능성 실란 커플링제가 에폭시계 콘크리트 주차장 바닥용 마감재의 물리적 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • This study attempted to the effect on the physical performance of silane coupling agent on solventless epoxy-based concrete surface finishing material for parking floor. Tests were carried out in accordance with KS F 4041 and KS F 4937. The results of compressive strength, flexural compressive are 95.6N/㎟, 25.4N/㎟ and after wheel moving load testing, average abrasive depth is 0.96mm, these results satisfied the quality standard of KS F 4041, KS F 4937. As conclusion, this study confirmed that the silane coupling agent greatly effected on the physical performance of solventless epoxy resin.

Retrofitting of a weaker building by coupling it to an adjacent stronger building using MR dampers

  • Among various retrofitting strategies, use of semi-active control for retrofitting a building structure has gained momentum in recent years. One of the techniques for such retrofitting is to connect a weaker building to an adjacent stronger building by semi-active devices, so that performances of a weaker building are significantly improved for seismic forces. In this paper, a ten storey weaker building is connected to an adjacent stronger building using magneto-rheological (MR) dampers, for primarily improving the performance of the weaker building in terms of displacement, drift and base shear. For this, a fuzzy logic controller is specifically developed by fuzzyfying the responses of the coupled system. The performance of the control strategy is compared with the passive-on and passive-off controls. Pounding Mitigation between the two buildings is also investigated using all three control strategies. The results show that there exists a fundamental frequency ratio between the two buildings for which maximum control of the weaker building response takes place with no penalty on the stronger building. There exists also a fundamental frequency ratio where control of the weaker building response is achieved at the expense of the amplification of the stronger building. However, coupling strategy always improves the possibility of pounding mitigation.
