PM Assisted, Brushless Wound Rotor Synchronous Machine

  • This paper presents a new permanent magnet (PM) assisted topology for a recently introduced brushless wound rotor synchronous machine (BL-WRSM) [1]. The BL-WRSM had a dual-inverter configuration for generating a composite magneto motive force (MMF) with a fundamental component and a subharmonic component. The subharmonic component of the MMF is used for brushless excitation of the rotor. In this paper, additional PMs were introduced on the rotor of the BL-WRSM, making it a hybrid BL-WRSM. We also discussed the flux weakening operation for the hybrid BL-WRSM. The hybrid BL-WRSM offered advantages for starting the machine and provided better performance under full-load conditions. The finite element method (FEM) was used to analyze the performance of the hybrid BL-WRSM, and we compared its performance with BL-WRSM. Finally, prototypes were built with and without the PM-assistance, and experiments were conducted to demonstrate their performance.

The Parameter Estimation and Stability Improvement of the Brushless DC Motor (Brushless DC Motor의 제어 파라미터 추정과 안정도향상)

  • Generally, the digital controller has many advantages such as high precision, robustness to electrical noise, capability of flexible programming and fast response to the load variation. In this study, we have established proper mathematical equivalent model of Brushless DC (BLDC) motor and estimated the motor parameter by means of the back-emf measurement as being the step input to the controlled target BLDC motor. And the validity of proposed estimation method is confirmed by the test result of step response. As well, we have designed the reasonable digital controller as a consequence of the root locus method which is obtained from the open-loop transfer function of BLDC motor with hall sensor, and the determination of control gain for variable speed control. Here, revised Ziegler-Nichols tuning method is applied for the proper digital gain establishment, and the system stability is verified by the frequency domain analysis with Bode-plot and experimentation.

  • 최근 각종 회전전기의 설계제작에 있어서 그경제성과 신뢰성을 높이고저 가능한 한고속화 내지는 단일화 경향에 있다. 예로써 1,500MV급 주발전기라면 8MW라는 려자전력이 필요하므로 이를 종래의 직결직류려자기방식으로서는 정류조건에서 제한을 받게된다. 고로이러한 난문제의 해결책으로서 직류여자기의 감속, 별치의 M-G Set, 또는 이중전기자법등이 고찰되고 있으나 역시 과담한 경제문제를 수반하게 된다. 또한 각종산업의 발달에 따라 요구되는 부하특성과 가혹한 환경조건에서 운전되어야할 경우가 증가되고 있다. 즉 염소Gas, 아유산 Gas, 인화유기 또는 공해상등을 막론한 주위조건에서 방식방폭의 안정성과 소형경량화의 경제성등을 설계의 주요목적으로 본다. 이것은 회전전기의 고정자와 회전자간에 전달되는 전기적 Energy가 회전기계의 가장 약점인 탁동부분을 통과하기 때문이다. 여기에서 탁동부를 제거할 수단으로 Brushless 려자방식이 고안되었으며 오래전부터 그 Idea가 창안되어 있었으나 최근 갑자기 극소용량급에서 초대용량급에 이르기까지 Brushless화 되었음은 재료과학에서 본 자기증중기 또는 반도체공학의 발달이 크게 영향하였다. 필자는 여기에 발전기를 중심으로 Brushless 려자방식의 종류와 문제점을 검토하여 금후 발전될 전망에 대하여 간단히 논한다.

  • This paper describes an effort to develope a microcomputer-based parameter measurement system for a brushless DC motor. Back EMF equation is derived from back EMF waveform of a brushless DC motor. To minimize error the due to the ripple component in the measured armature current, digital averaging filter is employed. The whole identification process of signal generation, measurement parameter determination is fully automated. A new identification algorithm for the brushless DC motor parameters is developed. New parameter correction method is proposed using the deadzone current and the time to reach the peak current. In the proposed correction method, the measured current is in excellent agreement with the estimated current.

  • Brushless DC motors are widely used in many industrial fields as an actuator of robot and driving power motors of electrical vehicle. In this paper adaptive fuzzy sliding mode scheme is developed for velocity control of brushless DC motor. The proposed scheme does not require an accurate dynamic model. yet it guarantees asymptotic trajectory tracking despite torque variations. Numerical simulation and DSP-based experimental works for velocity control of brushless DC motor are carried out.

  • This paper presents a new rotor position estimation method for brushless DC motors. The estimation error of the rotor position clearly provokes the phase shift angle misaligned between the phase current and the back-EMF waveforms, which causes torque ripple in brushless DC motor drives. Such an estimation error can be reduced with the help of the proposed neutral-voltage-based estimation method, which is structured as a closed loop observer. A neutral voltage appearing during the normal mode of the inverter operation is found to be an observable and control table measure, which can be used for estimating an exact rotor position. This neutral voltage is obtained from the DC-link current, the switching logic, and the motor speed values. The proposed algorithm, which can be easily implemented by using a single DC-link current and the motor terminal voltage sensors, is verified by simulation and experiment results.

Comparison of Performance of Brushless DC Drives under Direct Torque Control and PWM Current Control

  • Direct torque control (DTC) was originally developed for induction machine drives, and, more recently has been applied to permanent magnet brushless AC (BLAC) drives. In this paper, the performance of DTC controlled brushless DC (BLDC) drives is compared with that of PWM current controlled BLDC drives, both with and without current shaping. Both simulation and experimental results are presented, as well as the analysis of the resulting torque waveforms. It is shown that, in addition to exhibiting a fast torque response, a DTC controlled BLDC drive has a significantly lower low-frequency torque ripple than the PWM current controlled BLDC drive without current shaping, and that it is easier to implement than PWM current control with current shaping.

  • Recently, most machineries have been small size and mobile type. Then the motors used in this field are developed in micro size such as about 2mm in diameter. The structure of this motor is similar to a general brushless DC motor but because of small sige there is no position sensor such as hall sensor. In this paper, we propose synchronous driving and control method for micro brushless DC motor without position sensor. We design and manufacture this controller and perform experiment to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In all sorts of primary factor which produce torque ripple of d.c brushless motor cogging torque which is generated from relation between permanent magnet rotor and salient pole cannot controled by external control system. So in this paper cogging torque is analysed by simple method in which slot fuctuion is introduced. And for reducing counterplan of cogging torque d.c brushless motor which plot auxiliary slot by inequality interval is proposed. Thus the quantitative torque characteristics of new motor which designed by this method is analysed by F.E.M and validity of this new design is proved.

  • In this paper, we consider feedback-kinearizing control of brushless dc motors which have been increasingly used in high-performance servo applications, We completely characterize the whole class of the feedback controllers that enable the brushless dc motors to behave like linear systems but without torque ripple. The whole class of the feedback-linearizing controllers is characterized in the explicit form which contains a function to be chosen freely. The previously known controllers correspond to either the particular ones in our whole class of the feedback-Linearzing controllers or their truncated Fourier expansions. This free function can be used to achieve other control objectives as well as linear dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, our feedback-linearizing controllers can be easily determined from the measurement data of back EMF.
