This paper proposes a modified bar simulation method for analyzing the shear lag effect of variable sectional box girder with multiple cells. This theoretical method formulates the equivalent area of stiffening bars and the allocation proportion of shear flows in webs, and re-derives the governing differential equations of bar simulation method. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by the model test and finite element (FE) analysis of a simply supported multi-cell box girder with constant depth. Subsequently, parametric analysis is conducted to explore the mechanism of shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder with multiple cells. Results show that the shear lag behavior of variable box-section cantilever box girder is weaker than that of box girder with constant section. It is recommended to make the gradient of shear flow in the web with respect to span length vary as smoothly as possible for eliminating the shear lag effect of box girder. An effective countermeasure for diminishing shear lag effect is to increase the number of box chambers or change the variation manner of bridge depth. The shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder will get more server when the length of central flanges is shorter than 0.26 or longer than 0.36 times of total width of top flange, as well as the cantilever length exceeds 0.29 times of total length of box's flange. Therefore, the distance between central webs can adjust the shear lag effect of box girder. Especially, the width ratio of cantilever plate with respect to total length of top flange is proposed to be no more 1/3.

This paper presents the results of the experimental and analytical investigation for the fatigue strength of welded details frequently used in steel bridges, especially for the details with relatively lower fatigue strength. The welded details included four kinds of welded details corresponding to the categories C, D, E and E' which represent the flange attachment details, web attachment details, transverse stiffeners and cover-plate details. Tensile fatigue tests were performed. The test results were compared with other available test results and the fatigue criteria of AASHTO, JSSC and Eurocode specifications. Generally, our test results were well agreed with other test results and satisfied with above-mentioned fatigue design provisions. However, it was found that transversely loaded weld-details showed lower fatigue strength than longitudinally loaded weld-details in transverse stiffener detail, and the test results of those details were not satisfied with AASHTO fatigue provisions. Examining the effect of length of gusset plate attachment details, welded details with longer attachment showed relatively lower fatigue strength, especially for the out-of-plane gusset plate details. It is recommended to perform additional fatigue tests with various loading and detail parameters and to establish the more detailed fatigue categories such as Eurocode or JSSC

In this paper, hybrid health monitoring techniques using acceleration-impedance features are newly proposed to detect two damage-type in steel plate-girder bridges, which are girder's stiffness-loss and support perturbation. The hybrid techniques mainly consists of three sequential phases: 1) to alarm the occurrence of damage in global manner, 2) to classify the alarmed damage into subsystems of the structure, and 3) to estimate the classified damage in detail using methods suitable for the subsystems. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the alarmed damage is classified into subsystems by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the final phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using modal strain energy-based damage index method and root mean square deviation (RMSD) method. The feasibility of the proposed hybrid technique is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled steel plate-girder bridge model for which hybrid acceleration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios. Also, the effect of temperature on the accuracy of the impedance-based damage monitoring results are experimentally examined from combined scenarios of support damage cases and temperature changes.
Traditional external post-tensioning method using either steel bars or tendons is commonly used as a retrofitting method for concrete bridges. However, the external post-tensioning method has some disadvantages such as stress concentration at anchorages and inefficient load carrying capability regarding live loads. Thermal prestressing method is a newly proposed method for strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete girder bridges. Founded on a simple concept of thermal expansion and contraction of steel, the method is a hybrid method of external post-tensioning and steel plate bonding, combining the merits of two methods. In this paper, basic concepts of the method are presented and an illustrative experiment is introduced. From actual experimental data, the thermal prestressing effect is substantiated and the FEM approach for its analysis is verified.

Current Bridge Specification for Highway Bridges adopts a simplified method to determine sectional forces of abutment wing by dividing its area into four sections. This simplified method was developed in Japan when numerical analysis was not mature and computer resources were expensive. This simplified method has been with us without modification. This study evaluates the problem of current design practice to improve the design guideline for abutment wing. In this study, a finite element model of abutment wing based on shell elements was developed to obtain accurate sectional force. In addition, foreign design specifications regarding abutment wing were thoroughly examined. It has been observed that sectional forces obtained from the simplified method produce inaccurate results under various geometric shapes. Thus, it is recommended that two dimensional plate analyses should be adopted for future design of abutment wing wall.

Advanced composite structures are too difficult for such design engineers for construction and some simple but accurate enough methods are necessary. The simply supported laminated plates are analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. This method, however, may be too difficult for some practising engineers. In this paper, the result of analysis for such plate by means of the beam theory with unit width is reported. The plate aspect ratio considered is from 1 : 1 to 1 : 5. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms($M_x$) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper. the influence of the aspect ratio on the natural frequency of the specially orthotropic laminated plates is studied and it is concluded that the method used is sufficiently accurate for engineering purposes. The result of this paper can be used for simply supported laminated plates analysis.
The load distribution factor (LDF) values of simplified composite H beam panel bridges (SCHPBs) that were subjected to one lane and two lane loads were investigated using three dimensional finite element analyses with the computer program ABAQUS (2007). This study considered some design parameters such as the slab thickness, the steel plate thickness, the span length, and the continuity of the SCHPBs in the development of new LDFs. The distribution values that were obtained from these analyses were compared with those from the AASHTO Standard, LRFD, and the equations presented by Tarhini and Frederick, Huo et al., Back and Shin, and Cai. The AASHTO Standard distribution factors for SCHPBs were found to be very conservative. Sometimes, the distribution values from the finite element analyses for interior girders were similar to the results of the AASHTO LRFD, whereas the values for exterior girders were conservative in most cases. The new distribution values that were presented in this study produced LDFs that are more conservative than those from the finite element method. For the simple application of the design to SCHPBs, bridge engineers can use 0.42 for the interior girder and 0.32 for the exterior girder. The proposed values improve the current design procedure for the LDF problem and increase SCHPB design efficiency.

Conventional wireless power transfer methods based on coupled magnetic fields need a complex winding structure on the surface of the energy transfer and shows poor efficiency near metal objects due to the eddy current effect. In this study, to mitigate these problems, we investigate an electric field-coupled power transmission system, which is less prone to metal object problems and EMI. Because of the fundamental physical limit in the size of link capacitances, a half-bridge converter with an impedance matching transformer is proposed and the design procedure is derived to provide a soft-switching scheme. Hardware implementation shows that the proposed scheme with a pair of 10cm by 10cm copper plate can power a 1.4W USB FAN in a separation of 0.2mm by using insulating paper when driven by 227 kHz gate pulse.
Recently, a new foundation model called "Dynamic foundation model" was proposed for the dynamic analysis of structures on the foundation. This model includes a linear elastic spring, shear layer, viscous damping and the special effects of mass density parameter of foundation during vibration. However, the relationship of foundation property parameters with the experimental parameter of the influence of foundation mass also has not been established in previous research. Hence, the purpose of the paper presents a simple experimental model in order to establish relationships between foundation properties such as stiffness, depth of foundation and experimental parameter of the influence of foundation mass. The simple experimental model is described by a steel plate connected with solid rubber layer as a single degree of freedom system including an elastic spring connected with lumped mass. Based on natural circular frequencies of the experimental models determined from FFT analysis plots of the time history of acceleration data, the experimental parameter of the influence of foundation mass is obtained and the above relationships are also discussed.

In this study compressive and tensile load tests have been performed to investigate reinforcing effect and load transfer mechanism of small diameter piles installed in the foundation soil for the marine suspension bridge. Load tests were carried out on steel plate with diameters of 50cm, 100cm and 150cm varying loads starting from 39 tons up to 314 tons. Small diameter piles were proved to behavior like as friction piles and loads were not transmitted to the bottom of piles. From pull-out tests, the uplift capacity of small diameter piles was largely influenced by reinforcing materials compared to frictional resistance between piles and adjacent soils. The bearing capacity of small diameter piles appeared to be higher than the ultimate bearing capacity evaluated using static formulae. The load carrying capacity of small diameter piles was superior to the bored piles with a similar size. Thus, ultimate bearing capacity estimated from static formulae can provide conservative designs and thereby resulting in economic disadvantages. A further study to accumulate data regarding various soil conditions is recommended for an improved estimation of bearing capacity of piles with small diameter.
