  • Genistein was tested for chemopreventive potential against breast cancer by measuring the effect on proliferation of human breast cancer cells, human placental aromatase activity and cyclooxygenases-2 (COX-2) expression and activity, Genistein inhibited the growth of estrogen-independent MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell. However, there is no inhibitory effect of genistein on human placental aromatase activity. The expression of COX-2 was inhibited by genistein in Western blot analysis. Genistein significantly inhibited COX-2 activity at the concentrations of 10 (p<0.05), 25 (p<0.05) and 50 ${\mu}M$ (p<0.01). These results suggest that genistein may have breast cancer chemopreventive potential by inhibiting the growth of human breast cancer cell and expression and activity of COX-2.

  • The early detection of brest cancer is clearly a key ingredient for any strategy designed to reduce breast cancer mortality. Microcalcification(MCC) is one of the primary signatures to discriminate between normal and cancerous tissue. The detection and locating procedures can be automated by digital image processing, however, MCCs have various sizes, shapes, and intensity levels in film images, so it is difficult to find accurate locations and sizes. Firstly, we made quantitative analysis for many characteristic features of mammograms that can be used to segment MCCs from normal tissues. Secondly, we developed algorithms proper to segmentation like pattern matching. The performance was evaluated with TP and FP rates.

  • The present study has been undertaken to characterize availability of camellia(Camellia japonica L.) as a medicinal plant with antineoplastic and chemosensitizing activities. The crude extracts from fresn camellia flower, young leaves and nutraceutical tea of camellia leaf and flower buds were evaluated on their potential activities against various human cancer cells and multidrug resistance to cancer cells in vitro. The range of cytotoxicity displayed from 120$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL to 200$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL. Catemix 1(CT-1) mixed with camellia and green tea showed high toxicity(respectively IC$\sub$50/=l16$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL, 129$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) against AML-2/WT, acute myelogenous leukemia cell and MCF-7, brest adenocarcinoma pleual effusion cell. Generally camellia tea mixed with green tea showed higher cytotoxicity than the other camellia teas mixed with some herbs(CH). Methanol extract of steamed camellia tea and roasted camellia tea had a chemosensitizing effect to reverse Pgp-mediated MDR. In addition, camellia flower tea of insignificant cytotoxicity, chemosensitizing effect were increased remarkably chemosensitizing effect in mixed flower tea with some herbs.

  • This study was conducted to investigate breast self examination ( = BSE) - related knowledge, attitudes and practice of junior nursing college students in Kwangju. Chonnam province. The subjects were 161 nursing students in 3 junior nursing colleges among 10 colleges in K city and Chonnam province. The data was collected from Nov. 16, 1997 to Dec. 16, 1997 and analyzed by an SAS program for t or F test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of BSE - related knowledge was 18.2, that of BSE-related attitudes was 29.1 and that of BSE-related practice was 3.1. 2. The first advantage of BSE-related practice was the early detection of breast cancer. Reasons for not practicing BSE were difficulty in practicing(33%), and indifference to practicing(29%) in that order. 3. In the relationship between BSE-related characteristics and the scores of BSE-related knowledge, groups having breast cancer history in relatives or neighbors tended to have higher scores than groups not having them significantly(t=2.07, p=0.042). In the relationship between BSE-related characteristics and the scores of BSE-related attitudes, groups practicing BSE(t=1.67, p<0.10) and groups not receiving breast examinations from doctors(t=-1.83, p<0.10) tended to have significantly higher scores than those of others. In the relationship between BSE-related characterestics and the scores of BSE-related practice, the group having a breast cancer history in relatives or neighbors tended to have significantly higher scores than those of others(t=2.05, p=0.04). 4. In the correlation among the scores of BSE-related knowledge, attitude and practice, there was slight or little correlation between the score of BSE-related knowledge and that of BSE-related attitude(r=0.30) ; as well as between attitude and practice (r=0.18).

  • Diagnosis of breast ultrasound is better than mammography in the early detection of breast cancer, but, it is difficult to detect microcalcification. We studied on detection for calcification of breast tissue using acoustic resonance and power doppler with 7.5 MHz linear probe in breast ultrasound. We first constructed breast tissue phantom made of gelatin and saw breast, and then observed calcification by the change of external vibration. Calcification injected breast tissue phantom visualized the difference for brightness and region of color in ROI regions of power doppler. Acoustic resonance almost never visualized in low frequency regions, plateau constituted in about 300-400 Hz and colors vanished according to the increase of frequency.

  • Breast cancer rates are increasing every year, biopsy for diagnosing breast cancer is increasing as well. Biopsy also invasive test, have bad side effects from patients anxiety, infection, bleeding. In this study, Conduct a survey of 69 patients who brest lesion patient, both B-mode ultrasound and elastography exam and B-mode ultrasound was classified according to the BI-RADS category, and the elastography exam was classified according to the Color overlay pattern that the value of the kPa expressed in relation to the propagation velocity of Transverse waves. The optimal cut off value of the highest sensitivity and specificity was 54.70 kPa. In the color overlay pattern, Dark Blue 42 people, Light blue ~ Red 27 people classified results and BI-RADS classification results, benign 40 people and malignant 29 people classified results showed similar results. Therefore, It is judged that the color overlay pattern is positive when classified into Dark Blue, and malignant when classified into Light blue ~ Red. In conclusion, breast elastography is expected to play a innovative role in reducing the number of breast cancer examinations and classify between benign and malignant tumor.
