Calcium-Boron Interaction in Exopolysaccharide Production by the Cyanobacterium, Nostoc spongiaeforme

  • The effect and interaction of Ca and B on exopolysaccharide (EPS) synthesis in the diazotrophically growing cyanobacterium. Nostoc spongiaeforme, was investigated. The absence of B inhibited EPS synthesis 1.56-fold ($16\mu\textrm{g}$ glucose equivalent/mg dry weight, 16 d) over the control cells ($25\mu\textrm{g}$ glucose equivalent) grown in medium containing 0.5 mM Ca and $8{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ B. When B concentration was raised to $40{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, EPS production was stimulated 1.8-fold. Reduction of Ca concentraion to one-half (0.25 mM) resulted in increased B demand (16$\muM$) by the cells for EPS production at par with the normal sets. However, without Ca, EPS production also increased as B increased. Addition of B to a Ca-free medium stimulated cyanobacterial diazotrophic growth as well as synthesis of Chl a and phycocyanin (0-8 d). The data suggest B-dependent diazotrophic growth during Ca-deficiency and point to and important interactive role of Ca and B in regulation of cyanobacterial EPS synthesis.

표면 texturizaton에 따른 photovoltaic device의 열적 전기적 특성 (The effect of surface texturization on the thermal and electric characteristics of photovoltaic devices)

  • We studied the thermal and electric effect of 2D and 3D p-n photovoltaic diode structures with and without surface texturing. By analyzing the numerical simulation results of I-V characteristics and lattice temperature distributions, we systematically studied the effect of different texturing structures and different doping concentration on the characteristics of the silicon p-n photovoltaic devices. The, efficiency of the device with the surface texturing shows more than ~ 2% enhancement compared to the reference devices without texturing. The tendency of the efficiency of doping concentration has been studied with boron doping of $10^{14}{\sim}10^{17}cm^{-3}$ and phosphorus doping of $10^{15}cm^{-3}$. In addition to that, the study of changing phosphorus doping of $10^{15}{\sim}10^{18}cm^{-3}$ with boron doping of $10^{14}cm^{-3}$ has been examined. It has been shown that the texturing structure not only improves the light trapping but also plays an important role in the heat radiation.

보론강 핫 프레스 포밍 공정에 대한 가상생산 응용 및 검증 (Application and Verification of Virtual Manufacturing to Hot Press Forming Process with Boron Steel)

  • A virtual manufacturing system that is composed of JMatPro, a material modeler and $DEFORM^{TM}$-HT, a finite element package is applied to the hot press forming process: high temperature material properties for each phase such as flow stress, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, thermal expansion coefficient, in addition to TTT curve are predicted by JMatPro and taken into $DEFORM^{TM}$-HT to predict the material behavior considering phase transformation and heat transfer simultaneously. In order to verify the accuracy of computation, the residual stress and the springback were compared with the experimental measurements. Both the predicted and measured principal residual stresses and amount of springback were in good agreement. It was also found that the residual stresses generated from hot press forming are not negligible as it has been generally assumed, although the springback deformation is quite small.

  • Effects of boron and carbon on the densification and thermal decomposition of an AlN-SiC-$TiB_2$ system were investigated. $SiO_2$ was mostly removed by the addition of carbon, while $Al_2O_3$ formed $Al_4O_4C$ and promoted the densification of the systems above $1850^{\circ}C$. Rather porous specimens were obtained without the additives after hot pressing at $2100^{\circ}C$, while densification was mostly completed at $2000^{\circ}C$ by using the additives. The sintering temperature decreased further to $1950^{\circ}C$ by applying spark plasma sintering. The additives promoted the shrinkage of AlN by forming a liquid phase which was originated from the carbo- and boro-thermal reduction of $Al_2O_3$ and AlN.

  • 빠른 반응성 및 자체전파특성을 가지는 보론/티타늄 나노 다층박막구조를 대상으로 박막층 수평방향으로의 이종금속간 화학반응 및 화염 전파현상 해석 모델링을 수립하였다. 이종금속간 화학반응은 Arrhenius 반응식을 가정하여 모델링하였으며, 열 및 화학종 확산, 발열 화학반응에 따른 화염 자체전파 현상에 대하여 2차원적 전산해석을 수행하였다. 보론 및 티타늄 박막층의 두께 및 두께비 등 나노구조 형상의 영향을 비롯하여 접촉층 예혼합 정도가 화염 자체전파속도에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다.

2014~2016년 동안 경남지역 소규모 급수시설에 대한 건강 위해성 평가 연구 (A study on health risk assessment for small-scale water works in Gyeongnam province from 2014 to 2016)

  • Objectives: This study was investigated the characteristics of small-scale water works (SWW) in Gyeongnam area and conduct a health risk assessment of water-quality inspection items unfitted for water-quality standards (WQS). Methods: The characteristics of SWW in Gyeongnam province were analyzed using the data of SWW in the last three years (2014~2016) published in National Waterworks Information System. In addition, the health risk assessment for inspection items unfitted for WQS was carried out in four steps: hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. Results: The total number of SWW in Gyeongnam area was gradually decreased from 2014 to 2016. In addition, drinking water sources of SWW were in the order of ground water, valley water, spring water, surface water, and river-bed water. The number of points unfitted for WQS in SWW by year was 22, 45, and 18 in 2014, 2015, and 2016, respectively, and a total of 112 points were found to unfit for WQS in SWW during 2014~2016. The hazard quotient (HQ) for fluoride, nitrate nitrogen, boron in the unfitted points for WQS was more than 1.0, and the mean values for turbidity and color in points unfitted for WQS were 2.38 nephelometric turbidity unit and 16.25 color unit, respectively. Conclusions: The HQ for fluorine, nitrate nitrogen and boron was more than 1.0 in points unfitted for WQS among SWW in Gyeongnam area, and the turbidity and the color degree exceeded WQS, which mean that there is a possibility of harmful impacts on the human health.

Cu-Zn-Al계 형상기억합금의 변태특성에 미치는 열 Cycle 및 시효열처리의 영향 (Effect of Thermal Cycle and Aging Heat Treatment on Transformation Characteristics of Cu-Zn-Al Shape Memory Alloys)

  • The effects of thermal cycle, aging heat treatment and Boron addition on the phase transformation characteristics and mechanical properties of the shape memory alloys of Cu-Zn-Al system, which was designed to operate about $80^{\circ}C$ by this research group, were studied. From the view point of the effects of thermal cycle on the phase transformation temperature change, it was found that up to 100 cycles Ms and Af points increased by $3-7^{\circ}C$ and Mf decreased a little bit and after that all of them were remain constant, and As point was not affected. All of the phase transformation temperatures were decreased $5-7^{\circ}C$ by aging heat treatment, at $140^{\circ}C$ for 24h however the effects of thermal cycle on aged alloys were same as on unaged alloys. As the thermal cycle increased the shape memory ability decreased a little up to 20 cycles, but above that it kept almost same ability. By Boron addition, grain size was refined from $1500{\mu}m$ to about $330{\mu}m$ and the hardness, fatigue property were improved but shape memory ability was lowered.

  • Sapwood samples of pitch pine were treated with disodium octaborate alone by dip-diffusion, or in combination with water-repellent preservative(WRP) and methyl metacrylate(MMA). Treated samples were subjected to an accelerated leaching test for determining the improvement of leaching resistance and to soft rot and mold tests for evaluating the increase in bioefficacy, due to the addition of WRP and MMA applied as a second treatment. The addition of WRP and MMA retarded leaching of boron to some extent from treated samples and this retardation can be explained by improved water repellency of WRP and MMA treated samples. Borate /WRP and borate /MMA systems will not qualify borate treated wood for ground and fresh water contact use but may improve performance of borate treated wood in above-ground applications not subjected to continuous wetting conditions. Bioefficacy against soft rot fungi and mold fungi was improved by a second treatment with WRP. However, improvement in the performance of borate /MMA systems was not observed. Considering improvement in both resistance of leaching and bioefficacy against micro fungi by the treatment of WRP and MMA, simultaneously, the dual treatment of borate treated wood by MMA containing co-biocides might be believed as an ideal treatment system.

입방정 질화붕소 박막의 잔류응력 형성에 미치는 산소 첨가 효과 (Effect of Oxygen Addition on Residual Stress Formation of Cubic Boron Nitride Thin Films)

  • In this study we investigated the oxygen effect on the nucleation and its residual stress during unbalanced magnetron sputtering. Up to 0.5% in oxygen flow rate, cubic phase (c-BN) was dominated with extremely small fraction of Hexagonal phase (h-BN) of increasing trend with oxygen concentration, whereas hexagonal phase is dominated beyond 0.75% flow rate. Interestingly, the residual stress in cubic-phase-dominated films was substantially reduced with small amount of oxygen (${\sim}0.5%$) down to a low value comparable to the h-BN case. This may be because oxygen atoms break B-N $sp^3$ bonds and make B-O bonds more favorably, increasing $sp^2$ bonds preference, as revealed by FTIR and NEXAFS. It was confirmed by experimental facts that the threshold bias voltage for nucleation and growth of cubic phase were increased from -55 V to -70 V and from -50 V to -60 V respectively. The reduction of residual stress in O-added c-BN films is seemingly resulting from the microstructure of the films. The oxygen tends to increase slightly the amount of h-BN phase in the grain boundary of c-BN and the soft h-BN phase of 3D network including surrounding nano grains of cubic phase may relax the residual stress of cubic phase.

붕소함유 염수와 간수로부터 고순도 calcium borate를 합성하는 반응에 황산이 미치는 영향 (Effects of Sulfuric Acid on the Synthesis of Highly Pure Calcium Borate in the Boron-Containing Brine and Bittern)

  • 본 연구에서는 붕소함유 인공염수(간수)를 수산화칼슘으로 포화시켜 calcium borate를 합성하는 반응에서, 첨가하는 황산이 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 다양한 조건(반응온도, 반응시간, 가열반응 후 방랭온도)에서 calcium borate 합성을 시도하였고, 각 조건에서 황산 첨가유무에 따른 calcium borate의 회수율과 순도 변화를 알아보았다. XRD 분석을 통해 황산의 첨가유무에 상관없이 calcium borate($Ca_2B_2O_5{\cdot}H_2O$)가 생성되었음을 확인하였고, 황산을 첨가하면 부산물로 황산칼슘(($CaSO_4{\cdot}0.5H_2O$) 이 생성되었다. 황산을 첨가하지 않았을 때, 실험한 모든 반응온도와 반응시간 조건에서 calcium borate의 회수율과 순도가 황산을 첨가했을 때보다 더 높았다. 황산을 첨가하면 수산화칼슘의 용해도는 높아지지만, 부산물로 생성되는 황산칼슘이 calcium borate의 생성을 방해하여 그 회수율과 순도가 낮아진다고 판단된다. 본 연구에서는 붕소함유(500 mg-B/L) 인공염수(간수)에 황산을 첨가하지 않고 수산화칼슘으로 포화시켜서 $80-105^{\circ}C$에서 10분 이내로 가열하여 calcium borate를 합성하였고, 그 회수율과 순도는 각각 최대 80 %, 96 %로 매우 높았다.
