In this paper, we propose a new deinterlacing algorithm based on motion estimation and compensation with variable block size. Motion compensated methods using a fixed block size tend to produce undesirable artifacts when there exist complicated motion and high frequency components. In the proposed algorithm, the initial block size of motion estimation is determined based on the existence of global motion. Then, the block is divided depending on block characteristics. Since motion compensated deinterlacing may not always provide satisfactory results, the proposed method also use an intrafield spatial deinterlacing. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides noticeable improvements compared to motion compensated deinterlacing with a fixed block size.
This paper proposes new frame rate up-conversion algorithms. Adaptive motion estimation based on block complexity information are used to obtain more accurate motion vectors. Because the information on block complexity is extracted from the motion estimation prediction size from the original frame, additional computational complexity is not imparted. In experimental results, the proposed algorithms provide robust frame interpolation performance for whole test sequences. Also, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced to a benchmark algorithm.
In this paper, we propose a multi-level block matching algorithm using motion information in blocks. In the proposed algorithm, the block-level is decided by the motion degree in the block before motion searching procedure, and then adequate motion searching performs according to the block-level. This improves computational efficiency by eliminating the unnecessary searching Process in no motion or low motion regions, and brings more accurate estimation results by deepening motion searching Process in high motion regions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm brings the lower estimation error about 20% MSE reduction with the fewer blocks pet frame and the operation number was reduced to 56% compared to TSSA and 98% compared to FS -BMA with constant block size.
In this paper, a new fast motion estimation algorithm which is based on the Block Sum Pyramid Algorithm(BSPA) is presented. The Spiral Diamond Mesh Search scheme and Partial Distortion Elimination scheme of Efficient Multi-level Successive Elimination Algorithm were improved and then the improved schemes were applied to the BSPA. The motion estimation accuracy of the proposed algorithm is nearly 100% and the cost of Block Sum Pyramid Algorithm was reduced in the proposed algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm was verified by experimental results.
A block-based fast motion estimation algorithm is proposed in this paper to perform motion estimation based on the efficiently reduced search ranges in MPEG-4(ERS). This algorithm divides the search areas into several small search areas and the candidate small search area that has the lowest average of sum norm difference between current macroblock and candidate macroblock is chosen to perform block motion estimation using the Nobel Successive Elimination Algorithm (NSEA). Experimental results of the proposed algorithm show that the averaging PSNR improvement is better maximum 0.125 dB than other tested algorithms and bit saving effect is maximum 20kbps for some tested sequences in low-bit rate circumstance.

In this paper, we propose a fast block-matching motion estimation method using the cross pattern and the hexagonal pattern. For the block-matching motion estimation method, full search finds the best motion estimation, but it requires huge search time because it has to check every search point within the search window. The proposed method makes use of the fact that most of motion vectors lie near the center of block. The proposed method first uses the cross pattern to search near the center of block, and then uses the hexagonal pattern to search larger motion vectors. Experimental results show that our method is better than recently proposed search algorithms in terms of mean-square error performance and required search time.
In this paper, we propose a fast variable block matching algorithm for motion estimation based on bit-patterns. Motion estimation in the proposed algorithm is peformed after the representation of image sequence is transformed 8-bit pixel values into 1-bit ones by the mean pixel value of search block, which brings a short searching time by reducing the computational complexity. Moreover, adaptive searching methods according to the motion information of the block make the procedure of motion estimation efficient by eliminating unnecessary searching processes of low motion block and deepening a searching procedure in high motion block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides bettor performance - average 0.5dB PSNR improvement and about 99% savings in the number of operations - than full search Hock matching algorithm with a fixed block size.

In this paper, an efficient multi-level successive elimination algorithm using the locality in block was proposed for motion estimation. If SAD(sum of absolute difference) is calculated from large absolute difference values to small absolute difference values, SAD is increased rapidly. So, partial distortion elimination in SAD calculation can be done very early. Hence, the computations of SAD calculation can be reduced. In this paper, an efficient algorithm to calculate SAD from large absolute difference values to small absolute difference values by using the locality in block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is an efficient algorithm with 100% motion estimation accuracy for the motion estimation of motion vectors.
In this paper, the efficient motion estimation and compensation method for 3 dimensional wavelet transform is proposed. Recently, since the compression performance and scalable functionality are provided by wavelet transform, many researches have been carried out for applying to the video compression. For the temporal filtering, motion estimation and compensation techniques are used, but the unconnected pixels, which are produced by motion compensation result into the degradation of coding performance and quality of the picture. For the efficient motion compensated temporal filtering by reducing the number of these unconnected pixels, we propose the variable block size motion estimation and compensation method. Also we propose a method that determines the block size using rate-distortion optimization technique according to the local characteristics of the frame. The simulation results show the improved performances than the MPEG-4 scalable coding methods and the 3 dimensional wavelet coding methods using fixed block size motion estimation and compensation.

Motion estimation is one of the key components for high quality video coding. In this paper, a new motion estimation scheme for MPEG-like video coder is suggested. The proposed temporally adaptive motion estimation scheme consists of five functional blocks: Temporal subband analysis (TSBA), extraction of temporal information, scene change detection (SCD), picture type replacement (PTR), and temporally adapted block matching algorithm (TABMA). Here all the functional components are based on the temporal subband analysis. In this papre, we applied the analysis part of subband decompostion to the temporal axis of moving picture sequence, newly defined the temporal activity distribution (TAD) and average TAD, and proposed the temporally adapted block matching algorithm, the scene change detection algorithm and picture type replacement algorithm which employed the results of the temporal subband analysis. A new block matching algorithm TABMA is capable of controlling the block matching area. According to the temporal activity distribution of objects, it allocates the search areas nonuniformly. The proposed SCD and PTR can prevent unavailable motion prediction for abrupt scene changes. Computer simulation results show that the proposed motion estimation scheme improve the quality of reconstructed sequence and reduces the number of block matching trials to 40% of the numbers of trials in conventional methods. The TSBA based scene change detection algorithm can detect the abruptly changed scenes in the intentionally combined sequence of this experiment without additional computations.
