A Non-Pt Catalyst for Improved Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Microbial Fuel Cells

  • Fe-tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin on carbon black (Fe-TMPP/C) is examined and compared with carbon (C) and Pt-coated carbon (Pt/C) for oxygen reduction reaction in a two chambered microbial fuel cell (MFC). The Fe-TMPP/C is prepared by heat treatment and characterized using SEM, TEM, and XPS. The electrochemical properties of catalysts are characterized by voltammerty and single cell measurements. It is found that the power generation in the MFC with Fe-TMPP/C as the cathode is higher than that with Pt/C. The maximum power of the Fe-TMPP/C is 0.12 mW compared with 0.10 mW (Pt/C) and 0.02 mW (C). This high output with the Fe-TMPP/C indicates that MFCs are promising in further practical applications with low cost macrocycles catalysts.

  • As one of the main purpose of the physical management of cleft palate is to provide for the anatomic and physiologic requisites for speech, the speech must be as one of the criteria for determining when physical management has been achieved. But there is no objective methods to evaluate the speech of cleft palate patients. The authors tried to analyze the speech of adult cleft palate patients using sound spectrog raphy and compared with normal adults. The results were obtained as follows ; 1. In Vowels, cleft palate patients of both sexes showed reduction of frequency of the first and second formant as compared to normal. There was minimal difference in front vowels (i, e, ae) 2. In consonants, cleft palate patients showed reduction of frequency of the first formant in both sexes but reduction of frequency of the second formant was noticed only in fe- male patients. 3. There was no statistical difference in sound spectrograph between plosive, fricative, africative, nasal, and glide consonants.

포피린-메탈 복합체를 이용한 TNT 폐수의 처리 (Abatement Study of TNT Wastes by Porphyrin-Metal Complexes)

  • Porphyrin-catalyzed reduction of TNT to triaminotoluene was performed in both batch reactions and a continuous process. Packed-bed reactors were used to study porphyrin-catalyzed reduction in a continuous process. A reactor was packed with DEAD(diethylaminoethyl)-substituted glass beads on which $Co^{+3}$_centered deuteroporpgyrin Ⅸ, -2, 4-disulfonic acid was immobilized, and another containing only DEAE glass beads was used as a control. The porphyrin exhibited catalytic activity in its immobilized state up to 100 hours of operation. Based on the successful abatement of nitrobodies by porphyrin-catalyzed reduction in both batch and continuous process, this process is recommended to be used as a pretreatment for biological treatment or carbon adsorption treatment of TNT wastes.

  • A technique for fast image reduction or expansion, in which the reduction(expansion) factor is either any integer or any rational number M/L Is represented. The multiresolution is modeled as an interpolation and filtering followed by a decimation. The model enables frequency domain analysts of the muitiresolution representations as well as convenient design of the Kernels(filters). Using any rin linear phase(Type I) filters a fine to coarse multiresolution structure can be generated.

국내 바이오에너지 보급에 따른 온실가스 저감 평가 (Reduction of Green House Gases by Bioenergy Supplying in Korea)

  • Recently, the development of renewable energy sources in Korea has been needed due to climate change. One of powerful alternative energy resources to mitigate emission is to switch conventional fuels to renewable energy, such as bioenergy. In this study, current status of bioenergy conversion technology and its supply in Korea was investigate. Based on theoretical, technical and realizable potential of biomass in Korea, the amount of reduction of green house gases was estimated. The results shown that the contribution of biomass on 2020 reduction target of green house gases emission in power generation was $513,000\;tCO_2/yr$ and utilization ratio of technical potential of biomass was 6.4%. For the effective supply of bioenergy in Korea, more exact estimation of realizable potential of biomass in Korea and stable supply sources are needed.

Insecticide Resistance in Increasing Interest

  • Insect pests can be controlled through direct application of insecticides. Insect control by residual protectants is relatively inexpensive and has an advantage of destroying all stages of infestations. The efficacy of control is largely determined by the concentration of insecticides to which the pest species is exposed. A reduction in the period of control in the field afforded by a specific level of a protectant indicates that resistance has developed. An increase in the level of protectant is required to maintain control, and the efficacy of currently used insecticides has been severely reduced by insecticide resistance in pest species. Development of resistance to particular insecticide varies with species because insecticide resistance is often correlated with increased levels of certain enzymes, which are cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases, glutathione S-transferases and esterases. Some sections of insecticide molecules can be modified by one or more of these primary enzymes. A reduction in the sensitivity of the action site of a xenobiotic also constitutes a mechanism of resistance. Acetylcholinesterase is a major target site for insecticide action, as are axonal sodium ion channels and ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid receptors. Development of reduced sensitivity of these target sites to insecticides usually occurs. This review not only may contribute to a better understanding of insecticide resistance, but also illustrates the gaps still present for a full biochemical understanding of the resistance.

  • Fe (III) impurities in clay could be microbially removed by inhabitant dissimilatory Fe (III) reducing microorganisms. Insoluble Fe (III) in clay particles was leached out as soluble reductive form, Fe (II). The microorganisms removed from 10 to 45% of the initial Fe (III) when each sugar was supplemented to be in ranges of 1 - 5 % (w/w; sugar/clay). The microorganisms reduced 2.1 - 12.8 mol of Fe (III) per 100 mol of carbon in sugars metabolized when sugars such as glucose, maltose, and sucrose were used as sole carbon source. Bacillus sp. IRB-W and Pseudomonas sp. IRB-Y were isolated from the enrichment culture of the clay. The isolates were considered to participate in metabolizing organic compounds to fermentative intermediates with relatively little Fe (III) reduction at initial Fe (III) reduction process. By the microbial treatment, the whiteness of the clay was increased form 63.20 to 79.64, whereas the redness was obviously decreased form 13.47 to 3.55. This treatment did not cause any unfavorable modifications in mineralogical compositions of the clay.

Effect of 3,3',4',5-Tetrachlorosalicylanilide on Reduction of Excess Sludge and Nitrogen Removal in Biological Wastewater Treatment Process

  • A metabolic uncoupler, 3,3',4',5-tetrachlorosalicylanilide (TCS), was used to reduce excess sludge production in biological wastewater treatment processes. Batch experiments confirmed that 0.4 mg/l of TCS reduced the aerobic growth yield of activated sludge by over 60%. However, the growth yield remained virtually constant even at the increased concentrations of TCS when cultivations were carried out under the anoxic condition. Reduction of sludge production yield was confirmed in a laboratory-scale anoxic-oxic process operated for 6 months. However, it was found that ammonia oxidation efficiency was reduced by as much as 77% in the presence of 0.8 mg/l of TCS in the batch culture. Similar results were also obtained through batch inhibition tests with activated sludges and by bioluminescence assays using a recombinant Nitrosomonas europaea (pMJ217). Because of this inhibitory effect of TCS on nitrification, the TCS-fed continuous system failed to remove ammonia in the influent. When TCS feeding was stopped, the nitrification yield of the process was resumed. Therefore, it seems to be necessary to assess the nitrogen content of wastewater if TCS is used for reducing sludge generation.

Gene repressive mechanisms in the mouse brain involved in memory formation

  • Gene regulation in the brain is essential for long-term plasticity and memory formation. Despite this established notion, the quantitative translational map in the brain during memory formation has not been reported. To systematically probe the changes in protein synthesis during memory formation, our recent study exploited ribosome profiling using the mouse hippocampal tissues at multiple time points after a learning event. Analysis of the resulting database revealed novel types of gene regulation after learning. First, the translation of a group of genes was rapidly suppressed without change in mRNA levels. At later time points, the expression of another group of genes was downregulated through reduction in mRNA levels. This reduction was predicted to be downstream of inhibition of ESR1 (Estrogen Receptor 1) signaling. Overexpressing Nrsn1, one of the genes whose translation was suppressed, or activating ESR1 by injecting an agonist interfered with memory formation, suggesting the functional importance of these findings. Moreover, the translation of genes encoding the translational machineries was found to be suppressed, among other genes in the mouse hippocampus. Together, this unbiased approach has revealed previously unidentified characteristics of gene regulation in the brain and highlighted the importance of repressive controls.

Enhanced Biological Control of Phytophthora Blight of Pepper by Biosurfactant-Producing Pseudomonas

  • Pseudomonas isolates from different crop plants were screened for in vitro growth inhibition of Phytophthora capsici and production of biosurfactant. Two in vivo experiments were performed to determine the efficacy of selected Pseudomonas strains against Phytophthora blight of pepper by comparing two fungicide treatments [acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) and ASM + mefenoxam]. Bacterial isolates were applied by soil drenching ($1{\times}10^9$ cells/ml), ASM ($0.1{\mu}g$ a.i./ml) and ASM + mefenoxam (0.2 mg product/ml) were applied by foliar spraying, and P. capsici inoculum was incorporated into the pot soil three days after treatments. In the first experiment, four Pseudomonas strains resulted in significant reduction from 48.4 to 61.3% in Phytophthora blight severity. In the second experiment, bacterial treatments combining with olive oil (5 mL per plant) significantly enhanced biological control activity, resulting in a reduction of disease level ranging from 56.8 to 81.1%. ASM + mefenoxam was the most effective treatment while ASM alone was less effective in both bioassays. These results indicate that our Pseudomonas fluorescens strains (6L10, 6ba6 and 3ss9) that have biosurfactant-producing abilities are effective against P. capsici on pepper, and enhanced disease suppression could be achieved when they were used in combination with olive oil.
