We have shown that carboxy-peptidase destroys the biological activity of angiotensin octa-and deca-peptides. Since Proline occurs as the seventh amino acid from the amino end of the chain and since carboxypeptidase does not cleave proline from a peptid chain, it is evident that the heptapeptid H.asp-arg-val-tyr-ileu-his-pro.OH is formed by this hydrolysis. This peptide must then be biologically inactive. In order to determine whether the phenyl group of the C-terminal amino acid was the necessary requirement for biological activity of the octapeptide, $ala^8$ angiotensin octapeptide(amino acids of peptides numbered from amino end) was synthesized. For this synthesis the four dipeptides were prepared: carbobenzoxy-L-prolyl-L-alanine-P-nitrobenzyl-ester, m.p. $134-135^{\circ}C,$ carbobenzoxy-L-isoleucyl-imidazole benzyl-L-histidine methyl ester, m.p. $114-116^{\circ}C,$ carbobenzoxy-L-valyl-L-tyrosine hydrazide and carbobenzoxy B-benzyl-L-aspartyl-nitro-L-arginine. The first three dipeptides were obtained as crystalline compounds. Imidazole-benzyl-L-histidine was used in the hope that it would block the histidine imidazole against side reactions in steps subsequent to the formation of the C-terminal tetrapeptide. Also, it was through that the imidazole benzylated peptides would be easier to crystallize. This, however, was not the case. The tetrapeptide, carbobenzoxy-L-isoleucyl-L-im, benzyl-histidyl, L-prolyl-L-alanine-nitrobenzyl ester was not obtained in a crystalline form. Neither could the mono-or dihydrobromide of the tetrapeptide free base be induced to crystallize. Carbobenzoxy-L-valyl-L-tyrosine azide was condensed with the tetrapeptide free base to yield the protected hexapeptide; carbobenzoxy-L-valyl-L-tyrosyl-L-isoleucyl-L-im, benzyl, histidyl-L-Prolyl-L-alanine-nitrobenzyl ester. Upon removal of the carbobenzoxy group with hydrogen bromide in acetic acid an amorphous free base hexapeptide ester was obtained. This compound gave the correct C, H, N analysis and contained the six amino acids in the correct ratio. The octapeptide was obtained by condensing this hexapeptide with carbobenzoxy-B-benzyl-L-aspartyl-nitro, L-arginine using the mixed anhydride method of condensation. This amorphous product was proven to be homogenous by chromatography in two solvent systems and upon hydrolysis yielded the eight amino acids in correct ratio. The five protecting groups were removed from the octapeptide by hydrogenolysis over palladium black catalyst. Biological assay of the free peptide indicated that it possessed less than 0.1 per cent of both pressor and oxytocic activity of the phenylalanine8 angiotensin. This suggests that the phenyl group is a point of attachment between angiotensin and its biological receptor site.
The sand-eel, Ammedytes Personatus is a commercially important fish abounantly found in west and east coast of Korea. Samples were collected from the Baegryeong Island (Yellow Sea), Geoje Island(southern coast) and Jumunjin (East Sea) from May 1973 to December 1974. In this paper the author dealt with some biological point of the fish, especially the relationship between total length ang body weight, and the major spawning season and sex ratio. 1. The major spawning season was confined to the end of November and the end of December at Jumunjin. 2. The sex ratio (male/female) is 0.75 before the main spawning season and increases up to 1.36 after spawning at Jumunjin in 1974. 3. The relationship between the total length (L) and body weight (In were represented as follows: $W=0.0001906L^{3.1998319}$ for the sample from Baegryeong Is. $W=0.0003419L^{3.0213438}$ for the sample from Geoje Is. $W=0.0002655L^{3.1408629}$ for the sample from Jumunjin.
The epipyrone (EPN) biosynthetic gene cluster of Epicoccum nigrum is composed of epnC, epnB, and epnA, which encode cytochrome P450 oxidase, glycosyltransferase, and highly reducing polyketide synthase, respectively. Gene inactivation mutants for epnA, epnB, and epnC were previously generated, and it was found that all of them were incapable of producing EPN and any of its related compounds. It was also reported that epnB inactivation abolished epnA transcription, generating ΔepnAB. This study shows that the introduction of native epnC readily restored EPN production in ΔepnC, suggesting that epnC is essential for polyketide release from EpnA and implies that EpnC works during the polyketide chain assembly of EpnA. Introduction of epnC promoter-epnA restored EPN production in ΔepnA. The ΔepnB genotype was prepared by introducing the epnA expression vector into ΔepnAB, and it was found that the resulting recombinant strain did not produce any EPN-related compounds. A canonical epnB inactivation strain was also generated by deleting its 5'-end. At the deletion point, an Aspergllus nidulans gpdA promoter was inserted to ensure the transcription of epnA, which is located downstream of epnB. Examination of the metabolite profile of the resulting ΔepnB mutant via LC-mass spectrometry verified that no EPN-related compound was produced in this strain. This substantiates that C-glycosylation by EpnB is a prerequisite for the release of EpnA-tethered product. In conclusion, it is proposed that cytochrome P450 oxidase and glycosyltransferase work in concert with polyketide synthase to generate EPN without the occurrence of any free intermediates.
A numerical simulation of the steady and pulsatile flow across the end-to-side anastomosis was performed In order to understand the role of flow dynamics in the preferential bevel opment of distal anastomotic intimal hyperplasla. The finite element technique was employed to solve two-dimensional unsteady pulsatile flow in that region. The results of the steady flow revealed that low shear stresses occur at the proximally occluded host artery and at the recirculation region in the Inner wall just distal to the toe region of the anastomosis. The nor- mal;zed wall shear rate was increased, as was the recirculation zone size in the host artery of the by-pass graft anastomosis, with increased anastomotic junction angle. In order to min imize the size of the low wall shear region which might result in the intimal hyperplasia in the by-pass graft anastomosis, a smaller anastomotic junction angle is recommended. The pulsatile flow simulation revealed flow that regions of low and ascillating mali shear do exist near the anastomosis as In the steady simulation. The shift of stagnation point depends on the pulsation of the flow. As the flow was accelerated at systole, the stagnation point moved downstream, disappered at early diastole and reappeared during late diastole. Low shear stress was also found along both walls of the occluded proximal artery. However, the diastolic flow behavior is quite different from the steady results. The vortex near the occluded artery moved downstream and inwardly during late systole, and disappeared during diastole. Recirculations proximal to the toe and heel regions were significant during diastole. Shear stress oscillation was found along the opposite wall. The results of the present study revealed that tow shear occurs at the proximally occluded host artery aud the recirculation region in the inner wall Just dlstal to the toe region of the anastomosis. The present study suggested that the regions of fluctuated wall shear stress wit flow separation is correlated with the preferential developing regions of anastomosis neointial fibrous hyperplasia.
A strain of Pepper mottle virus (PepMov) was isolated from chili pepper plants in Korea. In host range study, this virus, designated PepMoV-SNU1, shared most characteristics with PepMoV isolates reported previously. Thermal inactivation point ($45^{\circ}C\;to\;75^{\circ}C$) and dilution end point ($10^{-1}\;to\;10^{-4}$) of PepMoV-SNU1 showed differences depending on the propagation hosts. Cylindrical and pinwheel-shaped inclusions were always observed in pepper leaf tissues infected with the virus alone. Unexpectedly, a special structure of pinwheel shaped inclusion surrounded with unknown small spots was also observed in the leaf section when co-infected with a strain of pepper mild mottle virus. The partial sequence of coat protein gene and 3' untranslated region of PepMoV-SNU1 showed 98% identity with those of other PepMoV isolates. A primer pair derived from 3' end of the coat protein gene and poly A tail regions were designed. Optimal detection condition of PepMoV-SNU1 by RT-PCR was tested to determine appropriate annealing temperature and additional volumes of oligo-dT (18-mer), dNTP, and Taq polymerase. Under the optimized condition, an expected 500 Up PCR-product was detected in pepper leaves infected with PepMoV-SNU1 but not in healthy plants.

To increase the efficiency of an applicator during microwave hyperthermia therapy, first, the length from the antenna end to a slot is varied to get the optimal matching of the characteristic impedance at the frequency of 2.45 GHz. Using the electric and thermal constants of biological tissue, we compose a phantom to calculate temperature increment as well as the resonance characteristics and the SAR distributions. The proposed 3-slot sleeve antenna inserted in an applicator plays an effective role in increasing the therapy size in the view of heating performance as electromagnetic energy tends to concentrate on not feed point direction but treatment area. The SAR is then used in combination with a finite difference heat transfer equation to determine the temperature distribution. Also, in order to shorten treatment time and increase therapy size, a square-array structure is suggested and analyzed.

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to compare the performance of two types of sequencing batch reactor(SBR) systems, anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic $((AO)_2)$ SBR and anoxic-oxic-anoxic $(A_2O)$ SBR on the biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Also, the profiles of DO and pH in reactors were used to monitor the biological nutrient removal in two SBRs. The break point in the pH and DO curves at the oxic period coincided with the end of nitrifying activity at about 1 h 30 min in oxic phase, and the change in pH appears to be related to nitrate concentration. The TOC removal efficiency in $A_2O$ SBR was higher than that in $(AO)_2$ SBR. The denitrification was completed at the influent period. The 2nd non-aeration and aeration periods were not necessary for the nitrogen and phosphorus removal because of the low influent TOC concentration in this study. The release and uptake of phosphorus in $AO_2$ SBR was much higher than that in $(AO)_2SBR.$ In order to uptake more phosphorus, the 1st aeration period in $A_2O$ SBR should be prolonged.
This study was carried out to compare the performance of two types of sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs), anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic $(AO)_2$ SBBR and anoxic-oxic-anoxic $A_2O$ SBBR, on the biological nutrient removal. The TOC removal efficiency in $A_2O$ SBBR was higher than that in $(AO)_2$ SBBR. At the 1st non-aeration period, the release of ${PO_4}^{3-}-P$ in $A_2O$ SBBR was higher than that in $(AO)_2$ SBBR because of the high TOC removal. At the 1st aeration-period, the nitrification was not completed in $(AO)_2$ SBBR, however, it was completed in $A_2O$ SBBR and the nitrification rate in $A_2O$ SBBR was higher than that in $(AO)_2$ SBBR. The release and uptake of ${PO_4}^{3-}-P$ in $A_2O$ SBBR was much higher than in $(AO)_2$ SBBR. Also, the profiles of DO and pH in reactors were used to monitor the biological nutrient removal in two SBBRs. The break point in DO and pH curves at the aeration period coincided with the end of nitrification.
The deep neural networks (DNN) that can replicate the behavior of the human expert who recognizes the characteristics of ECG waveform have been developed and studied to analyze ECG. However, although the existing DNNs can not provide the explanations for their decisions, those trials have attempted to determine whether patients have certain diseases or not and those decisions could not be accepted because of the absence of relating theoretical basis. In addition, these DNNs required a lot of training data to obtain sufficient accuracy in spite of the difficulty in the acquisition of relating clinical data. In this study, a small-sized continuous data processing DNN (C-DNN) was suggested to determine the simple characteristics of ECG wave that were not required additional explanations about its decisions and the C-DNN can be easily trained with small training data. Although it can analyze small input data that was selected in narrow region on whole ECG, it can continuously scan all ECG data and find important points such as start and end points of P, QRS and T waves within a short time. The star and end points of ECG waves determined by the C-DNNs were compared with the results performed by human experts to estimate the accuracies of the C-DNNs. The C-DNN has 150 inputs, 51 outputs, two hidden layers and one output layer. To find the start and end points, two C-DNNs were trained through deep learning technology and applied to a parameter acquisition algorithms. 12 lead ECG data measured in four patients and obtained through PhysioNet was processed to make training data by human experts. The accuracy of the C-DNNs were evaluated with extra data that were not used at deep learning by comparing the results between C-DNNs and human experts. The averages of the time differences between the C-DNNs and experts were 0.1 msec and 13.5 msec respectively and those standard deviations were 17.6 msec and 15.7 msec. The final step combining the results of C-DNN through the waveforms of 12 leads was successfully determined all 33 waves without error that the time differences of human experts decision were over 20 msec. The reliable decision of the ECG wave's start and end points benefits the acquisition of accurate ECG parameters such as the wave lengths, amplitudes and intervals of P, QRS and T waves.
