Bioactive Compounds in Vegetables: Their Role in the Prevention of Disease (채소류의 기능성)

  • There are various bioactive compounds in vegetables which are called 'phytochemicals' They are extranutritional constituents that typically occur in small quantities. They are being intensively studied to evaluate their effects on health. These biologically active compounds vary widely in chemical structure and function and are grouped accordingly, carotenoids, flavonoids, isothiocyanates, allyl compounds, indoles, isoflavones and saponins, etc. Traditionally used vegetables are defined, and their trivial names, biological functions and traditional and oriental medicinal effects are investigated in this study. Much scientific research needs to be conducted before we can begin to make science-based dietary recommendations. Despite this, there is sufficient evidence to recommend consuming vegetables rich in bioactive compounds, especially for the prevention of cancer.

Design optimization of the outlet holes for bone crystal growing with bioactive materials in dental implants: Part I. cross-sectional area

  • In order to improve osseo-integration of a dental implant with bone crystal we studied an implant with holes inside its body to deliver bioactive materials based on a proposed patent. After bioactive material is absorbed, bone crystal can grow into holes to increase implant bonding in addition to surface integration. The larger cross section area of outlet holes showed the less values of the maximum stress, and the stress concentrations near the uppermost outlet holes were also reduced with an increasing number of outlet holes. The conclusion, that the uppermost outlet design improvement was most effective to reduce the stress concentration and improve the growth rate of bone crystal, could be drawn. After the design optimizations, Type 6-C had provided the best results in this study. The overall shape optimization studies on the shape, location, number, and so on, of the outlet holes, should be carried out further.

  • The efficient synthesis of a tetrasaccharide, the suitably protected form of the repeat unit, →2)-α-D-Manp-(1→2)-β-D-Manp-(1→3)-α-D-GlcpNAc-(1→6)-α-D-Manp-(1→, of the O-antigen polysaccharide of the lipopolysaccharide from E. coli O77 has been accomplished. Glycosylation reactions for the coupling of four monosaccharide building blocks of the tetrasaccharide were carried out employing the CB glycoside method, the mannosyl 4-pentenoate/PhSeOTf method, and the glycosyl trichloroacetimidate method with complete stereoselectivities in excellent yields.

Promoter Analysis of the Cell Surface-abundant and Hypoviral-regulated Cryparin Gene from Cryphonectria parasitica

  • Cryparin, encoded as a single copy gene (Crp) of the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica, is the most abundant protein produced by this fungus. However, its accumulation is decreased remarkably in C. parastica strains containing the double-stranded (ds) RNA virus Cryphonectria hypovirus 1. To characterize the transcriptional regulatory element(s) for strong expression and viral regulation, promoter analysis was conducted. Serial deletion of the Crp promoter region resulted in a step-wise decrease in promoter activity, indicating a localized distribution of genetic elements in the cryparin promoter. Promoter analysis indicated two positive and a repressive cis-acting elements. Among them, the promoter region between nt -1,282 and -907 appeared to be necessary for hypoviral-mediated down-regulation. An electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) on the corresponding promoter region (-1,282/-907) indicated two regions at (-1,257/-1,158) and (-1,107/-1,008) with the characteristic AGGAGGA-N42-GAGAGGA and its inverted repeat TCCTCTC-N54-TCCTCCT, respectively, appeared to be specific binding sites for cellular factors.

  • Endophytic fungi have currently been acknowledged as the most promising source of bioactive compounds for drug discovery, and considerable progress has been made in exploring their diversity, species richness, and bioprospecting. Fungal endophytes from unique environmental settings offer a pool of potentially useful medicinal entities. Owing to the constant stresses imposed on macroalgae by marine environments, it is believed that algae and their associated endophytic symbionts represent a good source of structurally diverse bioactive secondary metabolites. Despite the proven significance of active metabolites of algal endophytes, little have been exploited. This review highlights the latest discoveries in algicolous endophytic research, with particular focus on the bioactive metabolites from algal endophytes. Compounds are classified according to their reported biological activities, like anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. Present experimental evidence suggests that a majority of the bioactive metabolites were reported from Phaeophyceae followed by Rhodophyceae and Chlorophyceae. An intensive search for newer and more effective bioactive metabolites has generated a treasure trove of publications, and this review partially covers the literature published up to 2016.

  • Recently, functional foods and bioactive components in foods have drawn the attention and interest of food scientists, nutritionists, health professionals, and general consumers. Bioactive whey protein is a highly concentrated milk serum isolate or concentrate, which is high in protein (80~90% protein by weight), carbohydrate- and sugar-free, and nonfat or very low in fat. Bioactive whey protein enhances both healthy and deficient immune systems. In general, ultrafiltered whey protein contains various whey protein concentrate peptides, which could be used for manufacturing probiotics added to health beverages. Hence, the objective of this paper was to review the published literature on research of new functionally improved health beverages using various bioactive components extracted from milk and dairy products.
