  • This paper presents the densification and microstructure evolution of bilayer components made from 316L stainless steel and M2 High speed steel during co-sintering process. The sintering was carried out at temperatures ranging from $1230-1320^{\circ}C$ in a reducing atmosphere. The addition of boron to 316L was examined in order to increase the densification rate and improve the sintering compatibility between the two layers. It was shown that the mismatch strain bettwen the two layers induces biaxial stresses during sintering, influencing the densification rate. The effect of boron addition was also found to be positive as it improves the bonding between the two layers.

  • The effects of coating of 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness on the mechanical property of alumina after heat treatment at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes under $10^{-6}$torr vacuum was quantified in terms of modulus of rupture(MOR) using Weibull plot. While the copper coating did not change MOR of alumina due to the nonwetting behavior of Cu on $Al_2O_3$, the reactive titanium metal coating caused a noticeable 29% reduction in averaged MOr strength. This was related with the combined effects of microcracks in coating formed during heat treatment and good bonding character between Ti and $Al_2O_3$. The effect of cosputtering of Ti and Cu, bilayer coatings of Cu/Ti and Ti/Cu were also investigated. It was found that Ti, cosputtered, Cu/ti and Ti/Cu coatings reduced MOR strength of alumina in the order listed. This was correlated with the amount of Ti at coating/alumina inter-face associated with a coated layer or segregation of Ti during heat treatment.

  • Based on first-principles LCAO method, we study the electronic and atomic structures of DNA nucleobases adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C) adsorbed on graphene surfaces. The ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interactions between graphene and nucleobases lead to the bilayer geometries similar to the Bernal stacked graphite. Through the density of states and charge density analyses, it is found that nucleobases are physisorbed on graphene by dispersive interactions with negligible charge exchange. Our calculations reproduce the atomic structures obtained in previous plane wave calculations accurately with much less computation, and well describe the delocalized ${\pi}-{\pi}$ interactions in graphene-nucleobases system, indicating that the LCAO method is very efficient for investigating graphene-bio systems.

  • Fe/MnO multilayers with different bilayer thicknesses were grown by pulsed laser deposition method. Grazing incidence X-ray reflectivity results showed obvious multilayer Bragg peaks implying highly layered samples and, through their analysis, some structural parameters were quantiatively estimated. From the X-ray diffraction peak corresponding to MnO(111), Mn-oxide turned out to be dominantly MnO. To characterize the magnetic properties of $Mn^{+2}$, XMCD were carried out. Magnetic moments of MnO near interfaces were ordered in the opposite direction to those of Fe.

  • The fracture behavior of $Si_3N_4N$, coated $Si_3N_4N$-BN composite was studied by the Hertzian indentation technique. New types of contact-induced cracks were found, and it was confirmed that these cracks have cone crack geometry. Contact damage was distributed in the substrate layer, which can absorb energy, as well as in the coating layer, so the propagation of initiated cracks in the coating layer were suppressed.

  • The dc resistivity and thermoelectric power of bilayered perovskite $La_{1.4}(Sr_{0.2}Ca_{1.4})Mn_2O_7$ were measured as a function of the temperature. In the ferromagnetic phase, ${\rho}(T)$ was accurately predicted by $a_0+a_2T^2+a_{4.5}T^{4.5}$ with and without an applied field. At high temperatures, a significant difference between the activation energy deduced from the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power, a characteristic of small polarons, was observed. All of the experimental data can be feasibly explained on the basis of the small polaron.

  • A layered perovskite oxide, $RbLa_2Ti_2NbO_{10}$, was prepared and investigated for proton exchange and intercalation behaviors. Its protonated form, $Hla_2Ti_2NbO_{10}$, exhibits the Bronsted acidity and reacts with organic amines. Polyoxonuclear cation, 4Al_{13}$, was then introduced into the interlayer by refluxing octylamine-intercalated compound with an $Al_{13}$ pillaring solution. These layered oxides were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, thermogravimeter, FT-infrared spectrometer and elemental analyzer. It is observed that the polyoxonuclear cation-pillared material exhibits a bilayer structure and is thermally more stable than organic counterpart at higher temperatures. The surface area of the pillared material annealed at 400 ℃ was the value of 25.1 m²/g.

  • We have investigated whether NO affects the activities of the rat brain Maxi- K channels reconstituted into the lipid bilayer. In order to introduce NO, we utilized an antibiotic, streptozotocin (STZ), which releases NO upon illumination. While adding STZ itself did not affect the channel activity, turning on the light in the presence of STZ induced an increase in the open probability (Po) of the channel.(omitted)

  • Some polycrystalline ferromagnetic mms are composed of continuously connected nanometer scale islands with random crystallite orientations. The nanometer perturbations of the mm introduce a large number of nearly degenerate local field configurations that are indistiguishable on a macroscopic scale. As a first step, this situation is modelled as a thin ferromagnetic disc coupled by exchange and dipole interactions to a homogeneous ferromagnetic plane, where the disc and plane have different easy axes. The model is solved to find the partial $N\acute{e}el$ domain walls that minimize the magnetic energy. The two solutions give a bistable configuration that, for appropriate geometries, provides an important microsopic ferromagnetic degree of freedom for the mm. These results are used to interpret recent measurements of exchange biased bilayer films.
