  • This paper consists of two parts; the first part describes the laboratory work concerning the behavior of lightweight aggregate concrete filled steel tubes (LACFT). Based on eccentricity tests, fifty-four specimens with different slenderness ratios (L/D= 3, 7, and 14) were tested. The main parameters varied in the test are: load eccentricity; steel ratio; and slenderness ratio. The standard load-strain curves of LACFT columns under eccentric loading were summarized and significant parameters affecting LACFT column's bearing capacity, failure mechanism and failure mode such as confinement effect and bond strength were all studied and analyzed through the comparison with predicted strength of concrete filled steel tube columns (CFT) using the existing codes such as AISC-LRFD (1999), CHN DBJ 13-51-2003 (2003) and CHN CECS 28:90 (1990). The second part of this paper presents the results of parametric study and introduces a practical and accurate method for determination of the maximum compressive strength of confined concrete core ($f_{max}$), In addition to, the study of the effect of aspect-ratio and length-width ratio on the yield stress of steel tubes ( $f_{sy}$) under biaxial state of stress in CFT columns and the effect of these two factors on the ultimate load carrying capacity of axially loaded CFT/LACFT columns.

  • In the present study, the fiber and matrix failure of composite laminates under arbitrary biaxial stresses were evaluated based on separate mode criteria such as Hasnin and Puck theories. There is a limitation to predict the fiber-dominant and/or matrix-dominant failures under arbitrary stress states using limit criteria (maximum stress and maximum strain theories) and interactive criteria (Tsai-Hill and Tsai-Wu theories). There is little literature for failure analysis of ships and offshore composite structures considering advanced failure theories such as Hashin and Puck theories. Furthermore, there is not enough practical commercial finite element analysis (FEA) code which is basically adopted the separate mode criteria. Hence, in the present study, the user-defined subroutine of commercial FEA code ABAQUS for evaluation of fiber and matrix failures of composite structures was developed based on Hashin and Puck failure criteria. And then, the proposed subroutine was validated by comparing with a series of experimental results of carbon- and glass-implemented composite laminates to guarantee the reliability and usefulness of the developed method.

  • Raman spectra of poly (polycrystalline) 3C-SiC thin films, which were deposited on the oxidized Si substrate by APCVD, have been measured. They were used to study the mechanical characteristics of poly 3C-SiC grown in various temperatures. TO and LO modes of 2.0 m poly 3C-SiC grown at 1180 C occurred at 794.4 and $965.7\;cm^{-1}$. Their FWHMs (full width half maximum) were used to investigate the stress and the disorder of 3C-SiC. The broad FWHM can explain that the crystallinity of 3C-SiC grown at 1180 C becomes poly crystalline instead of the disordered crystal. The ratio of intensity $I_{(LO)}/I_{(TO)}$ 1.0 means that the crystal defect of 3C-SiC/$SiO_2$/Si is small. The biaxial stress of poly 3C-SiC was obtained as 428 MPa. In the interface of 3C-SiC/$SiO_2$, the phonon mode of C-O bonding appeared at $1122.6\;cm^{-1}$. The phonon modes related to D and G bands of C-C bonding were measured at 1355.8 and $1596.8\;cm^{-1}$ respectively.

  • In the classical stability investigation of rectangular plates the classical thin plate theory (CPT) is often employed, so omitting the transverse shear deformation effect. It seems quite clear that this procedure is not totally appropriate for the investigation of moderately thick plates, so that in the following the first shear deformation theory proposed by Meksi et al. (2015), that permits to consider the transverse shear deformation influences, is used for the stability investigation of simply supported isotropic rectangular plates subjected to uni-axial and bi-axial compression loading. The obtained results are compared with those of CPT and, for rectangular plates under uniaxial compression, a novel direct formula, similar to the conventional Bryan's expression, is found for the Euler stability stress. The accuracy of the present model is also ascertained by comparing it, with model proposed by Piscopo (2010).

  • This paper presents a new model for the strap combined footings to obtain the most economical contact surface on the soil (optimal dimensioning) to support an axial load and moment in two directions to each column. The new model considers the soil real pressure, i.e., the pressure varies linearly. Research presented in this paper shows that can be applied to the T-shaped combined footings and the rectangular combined footings. The classical model uses the technique of test and error, i.e., a dimension is proposed, and subsequently, the equation of the biaxial bending is used to obtain the stresses acting on each vertex of the strap combined footing, which must meet the conditions following: The minimum stress should be equal or greater than zero, and maximum stress must be equal or less than the allowable capacity that can withstand the soil. Numerical examples are presented to obtain the optimal area of the contact surface on the soil for the strap combined footings subjected to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column. Appendix shows the Tables 4 and 5 for the strap combined footings, the Table 6 for the T-shaped combined footings, and the Table 7 for the rectangular combined footings.

  • It is expected that recent development of mechanical models will soon supersede previous empirical methods of detailing. In this study, a mechanical model is proposed to analyze the behavior of the anchorage zone of prestressed concrete members. The main characteristics of the proposed model lies in its rational consideration of material properties such as concrete strength in biaxial stress state and that of local zone reinforced by spirals. The shear friction strength of concrete surrounding a spiral is also considered. The computational results of the proposed model as well as the existing Strut-and-Tie model(STM) and nonlinear finite element analysis are compared with experimental results. The results of the comparison revealed that the proposed model showed better prediction of the failure mode as well as the failure load. Additionally, the proposed model also explained the three-dimensional failure mechanism very well, while other methods based on two-dimensional analysis could not do so well.

  • When $MoS_2$ is thinned to single layer (1L), photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield drastically increases due to emergence of direct band gap. A recent theory predicts that the electronic structure of 1L $MoS_2$ is very sensitive to its lattice constants. We investigated the response of 1L $MoS_2$ to biaxial tensile strain using spatially resolved PL and Raman spectroscopy. Changes in the lattice constants were monitored by the Raman frequency of the in-plane ($E^1{_2g}$) mode. Systematic correlations between PL and Ramanspectral features, revealed in the preliminary results, will be further tested with samples on other substrates and against thermal stress. The results will also be discussed in regard to the theory which predicts that 1L $MoS_2$ becomes an indirect semiconductor at small tensile strain and turns metallic when further extended.

  • The concrete stiffness matrices of membrane elements used in the finite element analysis of wall-type structures are reviewed and discussed. The behavior of cracked reinforced concrete membrane elements is first described by summarizing the constitutive laws of concrete and steel established for the two softened truss models (the rotating-angle softened-truss model and the fixed-angle softened-truss model). These constitutive laws are then related to the concrete stiffness matrices of the two existing cracking models (the rotating-crack model and the fixed-crack model). In view of the weakness in the existing models, a general model of the matrix is proposed. This general matrix includes two Poisson ratios which are not clearly understood at present. It is proposed that all five material properties in the general matrix should be established by new biaxial tests of panels using proportional loading and strain-control procedures.
