The failure mechanism of a hollow bridge deck which is made of glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) is investigated using both experiments and analysis. While the load-displacement behavior of the deck in the transverse direction shows a strong nonlinearity even in its initial response with relatively small magnitude of loads. In order to imporve the structural behavior of the deck in the transverse direction, we suggested that the empty space of the bridge deck is filled with a foam and investigated experimentally the static behavior of the orthotropic bridge deck which is made from GFRP and polyurethane foam. It is found that although the elastic modulus of the foam compared to that of the GFRP is about the order of $10^{-3}$, the structural behaviors in the weak axis such as nominal strength, stiffness, etc. are greatly improved. Owing to the low mass density of the foam used in this study, the bridge deck is still light enough with the improved structural properties.
Various parameters are involved in the frictional behavior of steel sheet during stamping. We performed various tests in order to investigate the influence of tool surface texture directionality upon the resulting friction in sheet forming processes. Four different tools were manufactured which gave us a range of roughness for both parallel and transverse texture directions. Each of the tools was examined in flat type friction tests under identical test conditions. The tool with the transverse surface texture produces significantly lower levels of friction than the tool with parallel texture direction. Considering the lubrication mechanism associated with transverse texture, one can imagine the lubricant being constantly supplied from the reservoir of the micro valley to the point of contact and hence producing the lower levels of friction seen.
The application of fracture mechanics is being increased gradually to assess the safety of welded structures containing crack. Fatigue crack propagation behavior and elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ of home made flux cored wire(1.22mm) CO$_{2}$ weldments was discussed. Especially fatigue crack propagation test was carried out by .DELTA.K control instead of load control and elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ was obtained by ASTM-R curve method on C.T.specimen in transverse direction of weldments. The results obtained are as follows; (1) Weld metal presented an almost complete similarity to base metal on fatigue crack propagation rate in transverse direction. (2) Weld metal was more than base metal on J$_{IC}$ value in transverse direction. (3) F.C.W. CO$_{2}$ weldments had an excellent characteristic of fatigue crack propagation rate and J$_{IC}$ in less than 50kg/mm$^{2}$ steel grade, this would result from that weld metal had good static strength.trength.

The failure mechanism of a hollow bridge deck which is made of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) to improve its durability and life time significantly is investigated using both experiments and analyses. While the Load-displacement behavior of the deck in the longitudinal direction is almost linear just before the failure, the behavior in the transverse direction shows a strong nonlinearity even in its initial response with relatively small magnitude of loads. We found that the nonlinearity is due to the imperfection of the connection between the flange and the web; a plastic deformation can t라e place in the connection. The argument is demonstrated using a simple structural model in which a rigid plastic hinge is introduced to the connection. We also checked the contribution of the delamination mechanism to the failure. But the delamination is not the main mechanism which initiates and causes the failure of the bridge deck. In order to improved the structural behavior of the deck in the transverse direction, we suggested that the empty space of the bridge deck is filled with a foam and confirmed the improved behavior by a numerical analysis.

The effects of heat treatment and fiber orientation on tensile strength and fatigue behavior were studied in a continuously reinforced. magnesium-based composite Following an earlier TEM investigation, specimens were thermally aged to modified the interfacial zone between the alumina fibers and the magnesium alloy matrix. From the tensile experimental results, the ultimate tensile strength of the aged specimens were lower than that of the as-fabricated due to weak fiber-matrix interfacial strength with chemical reaction during the thermal processing. The fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted with specimens having the fiber orientation normal to the crack growth direction (longitudinal) and also specimens with the fibers oriented parallel to the crack growth direction(transverse). A comparison of the fatigue crack growth behavior indicates that aged longitudinal specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth the as-fabricated longitudinal specimens. Conversely, as-fabricated transverse specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth than aged transverse specimens.

The effects of heat treatment on fatigue crack growth behavior were studied in continuously reinfored, magnesium-based composite (FP/ZE41A). Following an earlier TEM investigation, specimens were thermally aged to modify the interfacial zone between the alumina fibers and mg alloy matrix. The fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted with specimens having the fiber orientation normal to the crack growth direction(longitudinal) and also specimens with the fibers oriented parallel to the crack growth direction(transverse). A comparision of the fatigue crack growth behavior indicates that aged longitudinal specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth than as-fabricated longitudinal specimens. Conversely, as-fabricated transverse specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth than aged transverse specimens. SEM observations of fiber pullout and ductile tearing on the fatigue fracture surfaces indicate that the aging weakens the strength of the fiber/matrix interface, giving rise to the observed fatigue crack growth behavior.
Reinforced concrete beam-column (RCBC) joints of laterally loaded unbraced frames are sometimes controlled by their shear behavior. This behavior relies on multiple and interdependent complex mechanisms. There are already several studies on the influence of some parameters on the shear strength of reinforced concrete joints. However, there are no studies methodically tackling all the most relevant parameters and quantifying their influence on the overall joint behavior, not just on its shear strength. Hence, considering the prohibitive cost of a comprehensive parametric experimental investigation, a nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) was undertaken to identify the key factors affecting the shear behavior of such joints and quantify their influence. The paper presents and discusses the models employed in this NLFEA and the procedure used to deduce the joint behavior from the NLFEA results. Three alternative, or complementary, quantities related to shear are considered when comparing results, namely, the maximum shear stress supported by the joint, the secant shear stiffness at maximum shear stress and the secant shear stiffness in service conditions. Depending on which of these is considered, the lower or higher the relevance of each of the six parameters investigated: transverse reinforcement in the joint, intermediate longitudinal bars and diagonal bars in the column, concrete strength, column axial load and confining elements in transverse direction.

Reinforced concrete(RC) column-bent piers represent one of the popular piers used in highway bridges of Korea. Seismic performance of RC column-bent piers under bi-directional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns which were made in 400 mm diameter and 2,000 mm height. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement ratio and loading pattern. Three specimens were loaded with bi-directional lateral forces which were main cyclic loads in the longitudinal direction and sub-cyclic loads in the transverse direction. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter specimens were bigger than those of the former specimens. Plastic hinge was formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom part of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.

It has been known that one-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. If the structure is composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening, structural behavior is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. This paper proposes an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. The governing equation for the two-dimensional rod theory is formulated from Hamilton's principle by making use of a displacement function which satisfies continuity conditions across the boundary between the distinct structural components in the transverse direction. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures.
