  • This paper considers the solution of the stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with random operator and/or random excitation using the spectral SFEM. The random system parameters (involved in the operator) and the random excitations are modeled as second order stochastic processes defined only by their means and covariance functions. All random fields dealt with in this paper are continuous and do not have known explicit forms dependent on the spatial dimension. This fact makes the usage of the finite element (FE) analysis be difficult. Relying on the spectral properties of the covariance function, the Karhunen-Loeve expansion is used to represent these processes to overcome this difficulty. Then, a spectral approximation for the stochastic response (solution) of the SDE is obtained based on the implementation of the concept of generalized inverse defined by the Neumann expansion. This leads to an explicit expression for the solution process as a multivariate polynomial functional of a set of uncorrelated random variables that enables us to compute the statistical moments of the solution vector. To check the validity of this method, two applications are introduced which are, randomly loaded simply supported reinforced concrete beam and reinforced concrete cantilever beam with random bending rigidity. Finally, a more general application, randomly loaded simply supported reinforced concrete beam with random bending rigidity, is presented to illustrate the method.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a method by using virtual simulation to calculate the behaviors of spacers to avoid conductor galloping with the hanging composite polymer spacer between conductors on different phases. We have considered with three types of modeling considerations for the analysis of galloping in power transmission lines, such as iced-single conductors without spacer, iced-single conductors with spacers, and iced-two bundle conductors with spacers. In simulation, the finite element method is used to calculate the structural response with geometric nonlinear behavior. The iced conductor is modeled by two beam-element faces with which it is connected. The ANSYS program is applied too. First, the calculation results show that the two beam-element model is very suitable to make a virtual simulation. Second, the amplitude of conductor galloping is reduced after hanged spacers. Third, when number of spacer is increased, the maximum magnitude of natural frequency of iced conductor will reduce. Final, the behaviors of spacers are verified in viewpoint of standard cases.

  • Finite element analysis is frequently used to get dynamic characteristics of complex structures. Since the results often show differences from experimentally measured ones, updating of finite element models is performed to make the FE results agree with measured ones. Among several model updating methods, one is to use frequency response function data. This paper investigates characteristics of the model updating method using simulated and experimental data for a cantilever beam. Damping effect is included in FE models, and FRFs for rotational displacements are calculated from FRFs for translational displacements using interpolation.

  • The present study is focused on instigation of the nonlinear mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete beams considering different types of FRP bars through nonlinear finite element simulations. To explore the impact of the FRP reinforcement type and geometry on the nonlinear mechanical behavior of reinforced beam, intensive parametric studies are carried out and discussed. Twenty models were carried out based on the finite element software (ABAQUS). The concrete damage plasticity model was considered. Four types of fiber polymer bars, CFRP, GFRP, AFRP and BFRP as longitudinal reinforcement for concrete beam were used. The validation of numerical results was confirmed by experimental as well as numerical results, then the parametric study was conducted to evaluate the effect of change in different parameters, such as bar diameter size, type of FRP bars and shear span length. All results were analyzed and discussed through, load-deflection diagram. The results showed that the use of FRP bars in rebar concrete beam improves the beam stiffness and enhance the ultimate load capacity. The load capacity enhanced in the range of (20.44-244.47%) when using different types of FRP bars. The load-carrying capacity of beams reinforced with CFRP is the highest one, beams reinforced with AFRP is higher than that reinforced with BFRP but beams reinforced with GFRP recorded the lowest load of capacity compered with other beams reinforced with FRP Bars.

  • In this paper, we present a new finite Timoshenko beam element with a model for ultimate load computation of reinforced concrete frames. The proposed model combines the descriptions of the diffuse plastic failure in the beam-column followed by the creation of plastic hinges due to the failure or collapse of the concrete and or the re-bars. A modified multi-scale analysis is performed in order to identify the parameters for stress-resultant-based macro model, which is used to described the behavior of the Timoshenko beam element. The micro-scale is described by using the multi-fiber elements with embedded strain discontinuities in mode 1, which would typically be triggered by bending failure mode. A special attention is paid to the influence of the axial force on the bending moment - rotation response, especially for the columns behavior computation.

  • Steel frame structures have been widely used in multi-storey and high-rise buildings and the connections in these structures are critical. In the Northridge and Kobe Earthquake, beam-column connections suffered damage due to brittle fracture. According to seismic design codes, ductility of the beam to column connection is also necessary. A study on the behavior of a beam to column connection with the aim of improving ductility as well as preventing brittle failure was carried out. In order to control the position of a plastic hinge on the beam, a connection with a hole in the beam web was developed. Five specimens with different parameters under cyclic load were assessed. The results are presented in terms of the stress distribution of the beam, hysteretic behavior, and ultimate capacity. Furthermore, the finite element method was also used to analyze the model, and the results were compared with those obtained from the experiment. It is shown from the analysis and experimental results that this type of connection is effective in terms of improving ductility for a beam to column connection in low-rise buildings.

  • Aging and deterioration of existing steel structures necessitate the development of simple and efficient rehabilitation techniques. The current study investigates a methodology to enhance the flexural capacity of steel beams by bonding Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) sheets to their flanges. A heavy duty adhesive, tested in a previous study is used to bond the steel and the GFRP sheet. In addition to its ease of application, the GFRP sheet provides a protective layer that prevents future corrosion of the steel section. The study reports the results of bending tests conducted on a W-shaped steel beam before and after rehabilitation using GFRP sheets. Enhancement in the moment capacity of the beam due to bonding GFRP sheet is determined from the test results. A closed form analytical model that can predict the yield moment as well as the stresses induced in the adhesive and the GFRP sheets of rehabilitated steel beam is developed. A detailed finite element analysis for the tested specimens is also conducted in this paper. The steel web and flanges as well as the GFRP sheets are simulated using three-dimensional brick elements. The shear and peel stiffness of the adhesive are modeled as equivalent linear spring systems. The analytical and experimental results indicate that a significant enhancement in the ultimate capacity of the steel beam is achieved using the proposed technique. The finite element analysis is employed to describe in detail the profile of stresses and strains that develop in the rehabilitated steel beam.

  • Since the functionally graded materials (FGMs) are used extensively as thermal barriers in many of applications. Therefore, the current article focuses on studying and presenting dynamic responses of multilayer functionally graded (FG) deep beams placed in a thermal environment that is not addressed elsewhere. The material properties of each layer are proposed to be temperature-dependent and vary continuously through the height direction based on the Power-Law function. The deep layered beam is exposed to harmonic sinusoidal load and temperature rising. In the modelling of the multilayered FG deep beam, the two-dimensional (2D) plane stress continuum model is used. Equations of motion of deep composite beam with the associated boundary conditions are presented. In the frame of finite element method (FEM), the 2D twelve-node plane element is exploited to discretize the space domain through the length-thickness plane of the beam. In the solution of the dynamic problem, Newmark average acceleration method is used to solve the time domain incrementally. The developed procedure is verified and compared, and an excellent agreement is observed. In numerical examples, effects of graduation parameter, geometrical dimension and stacking sequence of layers on the time response of deep multilayer FG beams are investigated with temperature effects.

  • Application of reduced web beam section (RWBS) as a sacrificial fuse element has become a popular research field in recent years. Weakening of beam web in these connections may cause local web buckling around the opening area which can affect cyclic behavior of connection including: maximum load carrying capacity, strength degradation rate, dissipated energy, rotation capacity, etc. In this research, effect of local web buckling on the cyclic behavior of RWBS connections is investigated using finite element modeling (FEM). For this purpose, a T-shaped moment connection which has been tested under cyclic loading by another author is used as the reference model. Fracture initiation in models is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is based on micro-void growth and coalescence. Included in the results are: effect of opening corner radii, opening dimensions, beam web thickness and opening reinforcement. Based on the results, local web buckling around the opening area plays a significant role on the cyclic behavior of connection and hence any parameter affecting the local web buckling will affect entire connection behavior.
