In an agitated bead reaction system, the enzymatic saccharification of uncooked starch was substantially enhanced. The enhancement mechanism was investigated front the view of the structural aspect of starch. The mechanical impact caused by the movement of the attrition-milling media resulted neither the destruction of microcrystalline structure nor the fragmentation of starch granule. instead, the most distinct phenomenon was the swelling of starch granule up to about 2.5 times, and the swelling mechanism was not similar with that caused by cooking. However, in the case of the enzyme addition in the attrition coupled reaction system, the swollen starch was easily fragmented into the large number of small particles by the synergistic action of the enzyme and milling-media. The exposed surface area of the fragmented particles plays the major role in enhancing the saccharification. The saccharification rate was quite different depending on the source of starch, the reason was discussed in terms of the granular structure of uncooked starches.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) powder specimens are treated by high-energy bead milling and then sintered at various temperatures. Depending on the solvent and milling time, the oxygen content in the AlN powder varies significantly. When isopropyl alcohol is used, the oxygen content increases with the milling time. In contrast, hexane is very effective at suppressing the oxygen content increase in the AlN powder, although severe particle sedimentation after the milling process is observed in the AlN slurry. With an increase in the milling time, the primary particle size remains nearly constant, but the particle agglomeration is reduced. After spark plasma sintering at $1400^{\circ}C$, the second crystalline phase changes to compounds containing more $Al_2O_3$ when the AlN raw material with an increased milling time is used. When the sintering temperature is decreased from $1750^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$, the DC resistivity increases by approximately two orders of magnitude, which implies that controlling the sintering temperature is a very effective way to improve the DC resistivity of AlN ceramics.

Both $Al_2O_3$ and AlN nanopowders with diameters from ${\mu}m$ to mm were bead-milled and surface-modified by stabilizing agent. The size of bead-milled nanoparticles compared with the primary powder was effectively decreased and was dependent on milling time and bead size. The results of dispersion stability analysis indicated that chemical bonding between nanoparticles and surfactant is more effective than chemical adsorption to prepare the stable transformer oils containing nanoparticles. In this study, the thermal conductivity of the transformer oils containing nanoparticles was measured by transient hot-wire and laser flash methods.

To study the dispersion factors of silica sol prepared from fumed silica powder, we prepared silica sol under an aqueous system using a batch type bead mill. The dispersion properties of silica sol have a close relationship to dispersion factors such as pH, milling time and speed, the size and amount of zirconia beads, the solid content of fumed silica, and the shape and diameter of the milling impellers. Especially, the silica particles in silica sol were found to show dispersion stability on a pH value above 7, due to the electrostatic repulsion between the particles having a high zeta potential value. The shape and diameter of the impellers installed in the bead mill for the dispersion of fumed silica was very important in reducing the particle size of the aggregated silica. The median particle size ($D_{50}$) of silica sol obtained after milling was also optimized according to the variation of the size and amount of the zirconia beads that were used as the grinding medium, and according to the solid content of fumed silica. The dispersion properties of silica sol were investigated using zeta potential, turbiscan, particle size analyzer, and transmission electron microscopy.
The effective saccharification of cellulosic biomass to glucose is the most critical step for the conversion of renwable biomass to alternative liquid fuel. The enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass can be significantly enhanced provide the attrition milling media is added during hydrolysis. The enhancing mechanism of hydrolysis reaction in an agitated bead system was investigated. An attrition-reactor (bioattritor) which installed specially designed torque measuring apparatus was developed, and the potimal saccharification conditions of bioattritor were determined. The relationship between the power consumption required for agitation of attrition-milling media and enhanced extent of hydrolysis of biomass was compared to evaluatic economic feasibility of the process.
A Nanosized $WO_3$ and CuO powder mixture is prepared using novel high-energy ball milling in a bead mill to obtain a W-Cu nanocomposite powder, and the effect of milling time on the structural characteristics of $WO_3-CuO$ powder mixtures is investigated. The results show that the ball-milled $WO_3-CuO$ powder mixture reaches at steady state after 10 h milling, characterized by the uniform and narrow particle size distribution with primary crystalline sizes below 50 nm, a specific surface area of $37m^2/g$, and powder mean particle size ($D_{50}$) of $0.57{\mu}m$. The $WO_3-CuO$ powder mixtures milled for 10 h are heat-treated at different temperatures in $H_2$ atmosphere to produce W-Cu powder. The XRD results shows that both the $WO_3$ and CuO phases can be reduced to W and Cu phases at temperatures over $700^{\circ}C$. The reduced W-Cu nanocomposite powder exhibits excellent sinterability, and the ultrafine W-Cu composite can be obtained by the Cu liquid phase sintering process.

In this study, a high energy ball milling process was introduced in order to improve the densification of direct nitrided AlN powder. The sintering behavior and thermal conductivity of the AlN milled powder was investigated. The mixture of AlN powder and 5 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering additive was pulverized and dispersed by a bead mill with very small $ZrO_2$ bead media. The milled powders were sintered at $1700^{\circ}C-1800^{\circ}C$ for 4 h under $N_2$ atmosphere. The results showed that the sintered density was enhanced with increasing milling time due to the particle refinement as well as the increase in oxygen contents. Appropriate milling time was effective for the improvement of thermal conductivity, but the extensive millied powder formed more fractions of secondary phase during sintering, resulted in the decrease in thermal conductivity. The AlN powder milled for 10min after sintering at $1800^{\circ}C$ revealed the highest thermal conductivity, of 164W/$m{\cdot}K$ in tne densified AlN sintered at $1800^{\circ}C$.
Uncooked starch can be effectively saccharified in an enzyme reaction system containing attrition-milling media. To develope the high efficiency bioattritor, an agitated bead type bioreactor was constructed, and its effectiveness was evaluated. The optimal operation condition of bioattritor was found to be 300 g glass bead/L, 200 rpm, standard type impeller for 220 g/L of uncooked corn starch. The torque under the various operational conditions were also measured. The interrelation-ship between energy consumption for agitation of attrition-milling media and enhanced extent of saccharification of uncooked starch was evaluated, Power consumption was measured to be around 1.53 watt/L under the optimal operation condition. The attrition coupled enzyme reaction system is identified to tie a very excellent energy saying process for saccharification of uncooked starch, and seems to have a bright prospect of industrial application.

For the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia (NH3-SCR), a V2O5WO3/TiO2 (VW/nTi) catalyst was prepared using V2O5 and WO3 on a nanodispersed TiO2 (nTi) support by simple impregnation process. The nTi support was dispersed for 0~3 hrs under controlled bead-milling in ethanol. The average particle size (D50) of nTi was reduced from 582 nm to 93 nm depending on the milling time. The NOx activity of these catalysts with maximum temperature shift was influenced by the dispersion of the TiO2. For the V0.5W2/nTi-0h catalyst, prepared with 582 nm nTi-0h before milling, the decomposition temperature with over 94 % NOx conversion had a narrow temperature window, within the range of 365-391 ℃. Similarly, the V0.5W2/nTi-2h catalyst, prepared with 107 nm nTi-2h bead-milled for 2hrs, showed a broad temperature window in the range of 358~450 ℃. However, the V0.5W2/Ti catalyst (D50 = 2.4 ㎛, aqueous, without milling) was observed at 325-385 ℃. Our results could pave the way for the production of effective NOx decomposition catalysts with a higher temperature range. This approach is also better at facilitating the dispersion on the support material. NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, FT-IR, and XPS were used to investigate the role of nTi in the DeNOx catalyst.
