A Controller Design for a Stability Improvement of an On-Board Battery Charger

  • This paper proposes the controller design for a stability improvement of an on-board battery charger. The system is comprised of a power factor correction (PFC) circuit and phase shift full-bridge DC-DC converter. The PFC circuit performs the control of the DC-link voltage and the input power factor. The DC-DC converter regulates the voltage and the current in the battery using the DC-link voltage. This paper proposes the design method of PI controller for the PFC circuit using a small signal model. The analysis and design of a type-three controller for the DC-DC converter is also presented. A simulation and experiment has been performed on the on-board battery charger and their results are presented to verify the validity of the proposed system.

  • This paper presents an effective control scheme for an electric vehicle battery charger where a symmetrical bridgeless power factor-corrected converter and a buck converter are cascaded. Both converters have been popular in industries because of their high efficiency, low cost, and compact size, hence combining these converters makes the overall battery charging system strongly efficient. Moreover, this charger topology can operate at universal input voltage and attain a desired battery current and voltage without ripple. In order to achieve a unity input power factor and zero input current harmonic distortion, the proposed control scheme adopts duty ratio feed-forward control technique in both current and voltage control loop. Additionally, in the current loop, its reference is created by a phase-locked loop (PLL) block, leading to a pure sinusoidal input current although the input voltage waveform is being distorted. The feasibility and practical value of the proposed approach are verified by simulation and experiment with an 110V/60Hz ac line input and 1.5kW-72V dc output of the battery charging system.

Design Method and Analysis for Current Limit Charger of Battery System for Regulating CDE Power of Satellite

  • The cooler driver electronics (CDE) for maintaining a low temperature of a satellite payload IR sensor has a compressor with a pulsation current load when in operation. This pulsation current creates a large voltage fluctuation and may negatively affect both the load and regulated bus stability. Thus, a CDE power conditioning system has a battery for use as a buffer that is connected in front of the CDE load line. In this system, a battery charger limiter circuit is required to protect from an over-charge of the battery and power to the load. In this study, an optimal design and parameter selection were developed and simulated.

  • In the design of battery chargers, limiting the output ripple current according to the manufacturer's recommendation is important for reliable service and extended battery life. Ripple components can cause internal heating of the battery and thus reduce the service life of the battery. Care must be exerted in the design of the switching converter for the charge application through the accurate estimation of the output current ripple value. This study proposes a method to reduce the output current ripple of the converter and presents a detailed analysis of the output current ripple of the DC-DC boost converter to provide a guideline for the design of the battery charger.

  • In this paper, a charge equalization converter with parallel-connected primary windings of transformers is proposed. The proposed work effectively balances the voltage among Lithium-Ion battery cells despite each battery cell has low voltage gap compared with its state of charge (SOC). The principle of the proposed work is that the equalizing energy from all battery strings moves to the lowest voltage battery through the isolated dc/dc converter controlled by the corresponding solid state relay switch. For this research a prototype of four Lithium-Ion battery cells is optimally designed and implemented, and experimental results show that the proposed method has excellent cell balancing performance.

  • The SOC estimation method based on Kalman Filter(KF) requires the accurate battery model to express the electrical characteristics of the battery. However, the performance of KF SOC estimator can hardly be improved because of the nonlinear characteristic of the battery. This paper proposes the new KF SOC estimator of Lithium-Polymer Battery(LiPB), which considers the variation of parameters based on the hysteresis effect, the magnitude of SOC, the charging/discharging mode and the on/off load conditions. The proposed SOC estimation method is verified with the PSIM simulation combined the experimental data of the LiPB.

  • In this work, we propose techniques for estimating the SOC of Li-air battery. First, we describe and explain the operation principle of the Li-air battery. Energy density of the Li-air battery was compared with that of the Li-ion battery. The capacity and impedance value of the fully discharged voltage is analyzed, and the OCV value for SOC estimation is measured through the electrochemical characterization of the Li-air battery. Estimation value is obtained by SOC modeling through extended Kaman filter and is compared with the measurement value from the Coulomb counting method. Moreover, the performance of SOC estimation circuit is evaluated.

  • The purpose of this paper is concerned with a battery type powered handpiece drive system for surgical operation. Battery type powered surgical handpiece is suitable for delicate surgical operating. The conventional air-type handpiece has a mechanical noise, a strong oscillation and a danger of infection. And the conventional contact switching type handpiece has problems that is restricted by surroundings. By reason of this kind, we studied noncontact switching type surgical handpiece to change conventional air type surgical handpiece and contact switching type. Also in this paper we develop the battery type power handpiece drive system for surgical operation using controller IC UC3625 of UNITRODE CO. Finally some experimental and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed battery type power handpiece drive system.

  • The performance of the battery management system (BMS) algorithm is important for ensuring the stability and efficient operation of battery packs. Such a performance is determined by the internal parameters of the electrical equivalent circuit model (EECM). This study proposes a performance improvement and verification of battery parameters for the BMS algorithm using electrical experiments and tools. The parameters were extracted through electrical characteristic experiments, and an EECM based on Ah counting was designed. Simulation results using the EECM were compared with actual experimental data to determine the best parameter extraction method.

  • In increasing the safety and usage of lithium-ion battery packs, reducing the parameter deviation between cells, such as voltage and temperature within the battery pack, is important. In this study, we propose a screening method to reduce parameter deviation between cells in battery packs. Screening algorithms are constructed based on Fuzzy logic and quantitatively express the similarities between battery cells. Screening is applied by utilizing series resistance components after experiments of electrical characteristics that consider the operation status of battery packs. After screening, the standard deviation of series resistance components according to the similarity ranking is compared and analyzed, and their conformity are verified with the algorithm parameters.
