The flows through a turbomachinery tend to be extremely complex due to its inherent unsteady and viscous phenomena. A good analysis of the flows associated with rotor/stator interactions in turbomachinery will be great help in design stage. In this investigation, unsteady viscous flow structurts through one and half stage of UTRC large scale rotating axial turbine are analysed. The numerical data was compared with experimental data and showed good agreement.
We consider circular Rayleigh problem of hydrodynamic stability which deals with linear stability of axial flows of an incompressible iniviscid homogeneous fluid to axisymmetric disturbances. For this problem, we obtained two parabolic instability regions which intersect with Batchelor and Gill semi-circle under some condition. This has been illustrated with examples. Also, we derived upper bound for the amplification factor.

In the present study, characteristics of steady state laminar flows of a straight duct connected to a 180$^{o}$ curved duct were examined in the entrance region through experimental and numerical analyses. For the analysis, the governing equations of laminar flows in the Cartesian coordinate system were applied. Flow characteristics such as velocity profiles and secondary flows were investigated numerically and experimentally in a square cross-sectional straight duct by the PIV system and a CFD code(STAR CD). For the PIV measurement, smoke particles produced from mosquito coils. The experimental data were obtained at 9 points dividing the test sections by 400 3m. Experimental and numerical results can be summarized as follows. 1) Reynolds number, Re was increased, dimensionless velocity profiles at the outer wall were increased due to the effect of the centrifugal force and secondary flows. 2) The intensity of a secondary flow became stronger at the inner wall rather than the outer wall regardless of Reynolds number. Especially, fluid dynamic phenomenon called conner impact were observed at dimensionless axial position, x/D$_{h}$=50.

A numerical study to investigate the effect of intake vortex occurrence on the performance of an axial hydraulic turbine for generating tidal power energy in Sihwa-lake tidal power plant, Korea, is performed. Numerical analysis of the flow through an sxial hydraulic turbine is carried out by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes dquations with the shear stress transport turbulence model. In the real turbine operation, the vortex flows are occurred in both the side corners around the intake of an axial hydraulic turbine due to the interaction between the inflow angle of water and intake structure. To analyze these vortex phenomena and to evaluate their impacts on the turbine performance, the internal flow fields of the axial hydraulic turbines with the different inflow angles are compared with their performances. As the results of numerical analysis, the vortex flows do not directly affect the turbine performance.
The important problems that arise in the design and performance of the axial flow turbine are the prediction and control of secondary flows. Some progresses have been made on understanding flow conditions that occur when the inlet endwall boundary layer separates at the point in the endwall and rolls up into the horseshoe vortex. And the flows though an axial turbine tend to be extremely complex due to its inherent unsteady and viscous phenomena. The passing wakes generated from the trailing edge of the stator make an interaction with the rotor. Unsteady flow should be considered rotor/stator interactions. The main purpose of this research is control of secondary flow and improvement efficiency in turbine by leading edge modification in unsteady state. When the wake from the stator ran into the modified leading edge of the rotor, the leading edge generated the weak pressure fluctuation by complex passage flows. In conclusion, leading edge modification(bulb2) results in the reduced total pressure loss in the flow field.

The streamline curvature method is essentially used for the design procedure of multi-stage axial turbines. Moreover, by using this method, it is possible to consider the turbine loss characteristics for real operating conditions at an early design stage. However, there is not enough relevant research in South Korea to support this. In the present study, the streamline curvature method and the empirical equation for calculating the mixing loss are employed to predict the performance of a multi-stage axial turbine with leakage flows. The proposed method is applied to the prediction of the performance of a five-stage axial turbine with leakage flows, as used for an industrial gas turbine of 86 MW in South Korea. The calculation result is compared with 3D CFD data, and the advantages and limitations of the streamline curvature method are described.
A numerical study on the similarity of the developing laminar flows between in a straight duct rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the duct and in a stationary curved duct was carried out. In order to clarify the analogy of two flows, dimensionless parameters K/sub LR/ = Re/(equation omitted) and Rossby number, Ro, in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number K/sub LC/ = Re/(equation omitted), and curvature ratio, λ, in a stationary curved duct. For the large values of Ro and λ, it is shown that the flow field satisfies the 'asymptotic invariance property', that is, there are strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns, friction factors, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes for the same values of K/sub LR/ and K/sub LC/ if they are correlated with dimensionless axial distances Z/sub R/ = z/(equation omitted) for a rotating duct flow and Z/sub C/ = z/(equation omitted) for a stationary curved duct flow.

In the present study, the velocity profiles and entrance length of developing transitional pulsating flows are investigated both analytically and experimentally in the entrance region of a square duct. The systems of conservation equations for transitional pulsating flows in a square duct are solved analytically by linearizing the non-linear convective terms. Analytical solutions are obtained in the form of infinite series for velocity pofiles. The experimental study for the air flow in a square duct(40mm*40mm*4000mm) is carried out to measure velocity profiles and other parameters by using a hot-wire anemometer with a data acquisition and processing system. The distribution of velocity profiles( $u_{ps}$ / $u_{m,ta}$) in the decelerating period is higher than in the accelerating period. The distribution of the axial component of the axial component of velocity in the transitional flow is nearly uniform in the central region of the duct, and decrease rapidly near the wall. The entrance length correlation of the transitional pulsating flows in a square duct is obtained to be $L_{e}$/ $D_{h}$=0.83 $A_{1}$R $e_{ta}$ /(.omega. sup+1)$^{2}$TEX>

The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency and the prediction accuracy of developed large eddy simulation (LES) program for complex turbulent flows, such as recirculating and swirling flows. To save the computational cost, a Beowulf cluster system consisting 16 processors was constructed. The flows in backward-facing step and dump combustor were examined as representative recirculating and swirling flows. Firstly, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) for laminar backward-facing step flows was previously conducted to validate the overall performance of program. Then LES was carried out for turbulent backward-facing step flows. The results of laminar flow showed a qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulations and experiments. The simulations of the turbulent flow also showed reasonable results. Secondly, LES results for non-swirling and swirling flows in a dump combustor were compared with the results of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) using standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The results show that LES has a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, comer recirculation zone (CRZ) and center toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) than those of RANS. Finally, it was examined the capability of LES for the description of unsteady phenomena.

In the present study, velocity profile and wall shear stress distributions of developing turbulent oscillatory flows in an oscillator connected to straight duct located in exit region of a curved duct was investigated experimentally. The experimental study for air flows was conducted to measure axial velocity profiles, shear stress distributions by using the Laser Doppler Velocimetry(LDV) system with the data acquisition and processing system of Rotating Machinery Resolver(R.M.R) and PHASE software. The results obtained from experimental studies are summarized as follows. The critical Reynolds number for a change from transitional oscillatory flow to turbulent flow was about 7500, in the 60region of dimensionless axial position which was considered as a fully developed flow region. The turbulent oscillatory flow, velocity profiles of the inflow period in the entrance region were gradually developed, but those of the outflow period were not changed nearly. Velocity profiles of inflow and outflow were shown as a symmetric form in a fully developed flow region. The wall shear stress distributions of turbulent oscillatory flow increase rapidly as the flow proceeds to downstream and flow was in good agreement with the theoretically.
