Changes of Plant Biomass and Proximate Composition of Radish Exposed to Elevated Temperature and $CO_2$ Concentration (온도 및 $CO_2$ 농도 상승에 따른 무의 건물생산 및 일반 영양성분 변화)

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the long-term effect of the elevated temperature and $CO_2$ concentration on the plant biomass, C/N ratio, and proximate composition of radish. Elevated temperature by 2~2.5 higher than ambient temperature decreased plant biomass by 39% in the spring and 26% in the autumn, respectively. Elevated $CO_2$ concentration by $220{\sim}230{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$ higher than ambient $CO_2$ concentration increased plant biomass especially in root. The elevated $CO_2$ concentration, however, could not compensate for the negative effect of elevated temperature on the plant biomass entirely. Elevated temperature increased T/R ratio by 86% in the spring and 60% in the autumn, respectively. Elevated temperature lowered C/N ratio and raised crude protein, crude fat, and ash content in radish root. On the contrary, elevated $CO_2$ concentration raised C/N ratio and lowered the crude protein, crude fiber, and ash contents. These results indicate that climate change affect the biomass yield and internal materials of radish depending on the extent of temperature and $CO_2$ concentration rise in the future.

  • Objective : Jeol-sik, (festive seasons every 15 days based on sun cycle), refers to both Korean Traditional Festival food(jeol-sik), intertwined between months, and in-season meals(si-jeol-sik) in which the ingredients used are produced in each and one of the four season. I found that ingredients in Si-jeol-sik of Autumn are helpful for strengthening one's life force. Method : The study found that si-jeol sik for fall season has strong characteristic of casting out demons. When making songpyeon(half-moon-shaped rice cake) for Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiviing Day), they are steamed with pine needs spreaded underneath because pine needles are believed to have power in casting away evil spirits. For harvest ceremony, which were frequently held in October, people consumed steamed rice cakes garnished with red beans, which were considered to negate bad fortunes. Result : To prevent respiratory diseases caught esaily in fall due to wide daily temperature difference and dry weather, white good ingredients such as radish, pear, and taro are used. Conclusion : Main fall holidays are Chil-soek, Baek-Jung, Chu-seok. The best feature of Si-jeol-sik for fall season is that they cast out demons. Also, fall si-jeol-sik consist of many white ingredients for protecting lungs.

Flavor Characteristics of Kakdugi by Radish Cultivars and Seasons (무 품종 및 계절에 따른 깍두기의 향미특성)

  • Chemical and sensory characteristics of kakdugi which was prepared with various radish cultivars and harvesting seasons were analyzed during 7-day storage. Average pH of small radish cultivar kakdugi was higher than that of large ones, and total acidity was lower in small ones. Reducing sugar content was the highest in kakdugi of autumn radish. Organic acids such as lactic, succinic and fumaric acid analyzed by GC increased until the third day of fermentation, whereas volatile isothiocyanates analyzed by GC/MS continued to decline. There was a significant difference in flavor characteristics of large radish kakdugi across seasons, in contrast to no significant difference in those of small radish kakdugi except sweet taste and reducing sugar content in which interaction existed between season and cultivar. Score of overall acceptability was higher in small radish than large ones with Dongja showing the highest score of overall acceptability. Overall acceptability of autumn Dongja kakdugi was positively correlated with radish kakdugi odor and sour odor, respectively, but negatively with total acidity, lactic acid content, sweet taste and pungency, respectively. By multiple regression analysis, overall acceptability in spring Dongja kakdugi is expressed as a function of overall acceptability = -0.1115 + 1.2519 savory taste + 1.5159 malic acid -0.0054 total isothiocyanate + ${\varepsilon}$.

Comparison of Radish Cultivars for Physicochemical Properties and Kakdugi Preparation (무 품종별 이화학적 특성 및 깍두기 가공적성)

  • For scientification of commercial fermented radish products the study on physicochemical and processing properties of various radish cultivars should be proceeded and needed. Moisture contents of 3 parts of root ranged from 91.3 to 94.0%. Although, the upper part showed less content of moisture and ash than other parts, the upper part contained higher amount of crude protein and soluble solids. The sugar contents of Baekkwang grown on spring was the lowest$(5.0^{\circ}Brix)$ and that of Taebaek grown on autumn was the highest $(6.6^{\circ}Brix)$ among 6 cultivars. Significant difference of acidity was shown in various cultivars but not in each parts. The most abundant soluble sugars in radish root was glucose ranging from 15.8 to $27.3\;{\mu}mole/g\;f.w.$ fresh weight, f.w. and followed by fructose ranging from 16.4 to $23.1\;{\mu}mole/g\;f.w.$ However, the content of sucrose ranging from 0.7 to $2.7\;{\mu}mole/g\;f.w.$ was the lowest compared to others. Hardness of fresh root was the highest in Taebaek $[93.4{\sim}156.9N/m^2(\times10^3)]$, followed by Dongja and Chudong, and the lowest in Baekkwang. Changes in rigidity of roots during brining were determined. Although the rigidity was drastically reduced during initial 60 min., it was reversely increased during further storage. Sensory acceptabilities of Taebaek and Dongja were the best among 7 cultivars. Optimal time of radish fermentation at pH of 4.2 and acidity of 0.6% was between 24 and 28 days of storage.

  • Colonizing aphid species on Chinese cabbage, radish, red pepper and cucumber and their seasonal fluctuations were investigated without insecticide treatment during $1982{\sim}1984$ at an experimental farm in Suweon. The major species among the colonizing aphids in each crops were Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) on Chinese cabbage and radish; M. persicae (Sulzer) and Aphis gossipii Glaver on red pepper; and A. gossipii Glover on cucumber, respectively. Over 200mm of rainfalls within a 10-day period reduced the aphid populations drastically. Relative abundance of the two major aphids on Chinese cabbage and radish, and on red pepper showed inverse relationships between the spring and autumn densities within the same year.

The Economic Effects of Chemical Fertilizer in Big Data (작목별 비료투입에 따른 경제적 효과 추정)

  • This study analyze the economic effect of chemical fertilizer. We used the input and output data, and the analysis variables include production output nitrogen, phosphoric acid, potassium, seeds, and labor. The main results are as follows. First, for spring potatoes, potassium increases to a certain level of output, but over a certain stage, the output decreases as the input increases. Optimal use of potassium in the calculation of spring potatoes can achieve the effect of reducing input costs and increasing output simultaneously. Second, radish In autumn, nitrogen increases to a certain level, but over a certain stage it represents a reverse U-shaped relationship in which output decreases as input increases. This means that reducing the amount of fertilizer input increases the output. This means that soil-related agricultural big data can contribute to the management of nutrients and greenhouse gas reduction in agricultural land.

Growth and Yield Response of Chinese Cabbage and Radish on Application of Potassium Chloride Fertilizer (염화칼리 시용에 따른 배추와 무의 생육과 수량)

  • The application of potassium above the optimum level may cause the inhibition of plant growth, fertilizer loss, and environmental pollution. Therefore, application rate of K fertilizer should be recommended on the basis of soil test. In order to determine critical K content in soils causing growth inhibition of vegetables, $1m^2-pot$ experiments with Chinese cabbage and radish were accomplished with various K-application rates. The threshold concentrations of exchangeable potassium causing the inhibition of plant growth were $0.96cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for Chinese cabbage in spring, and $1.28cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for radish in autumn. Above those concentration levels, the yields of them were decreased with the increase of potassium levels in soils. Germination rate of Chinese cabbage in spring decreased with increase of the electrical conductivity (EC) of soils due to application of potassium fertilizer. In the harvesting stage, the potassium contents of plant were increased with the increase of K application rate while plant uptake of nutrients was decreased at the K adjustment level of over $2.0cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$.

Studies on the Contamination of Kimchi Material - Pesticide Residues in Vegitables - (김치의 오염(汚染)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) - 김치 재료(材料)의 농약오염(農藥汚染) -)

  • In order to investigate the level of pesticide residues in the vegetables for Kimchi materials (Chinese cabbage, radish, red pepper, garlic and cucumber), which were produced in Andong district, organochlorine and organophosphur pesticide residues were analyzed using gas chromatography. The results were as follows; 1) In chinese cabbage, radish and some other vegetables harvested in early summer (June), organochlorine and organophosphur pesticide residues were detected in almost all of the samples tested, and a few of them showed a level higher than the organochlor APR(allowable pesticide residues). 2) Heptachlor, the soil insecticide was the most abundantly detected pesticide among the four organochlorine pesticides tested (Dieldrin, Endrin, BHC, Heptachlor) in this study. 3) Somewhat higher concentrations of organochlorine pesticides were detected in all kinds of sample vegetables harvested in late summer than in those harvested in early summer. And the frequency of organochlorine pesticide contamination was also increased, but the frequency of organophosphur pesticide contamination was decreased. 4) In the vegetable harvested in late autumn, level of organochlorine pesticide residues and frequency of contamination were markedly decreased and organophosphur pesticide residues (Diaginon, Malathion, Thiometon, EPN) were rarely detected. 5) The results of this study indicates that to take a lot of vegitables grown in summer was somewhat uncomfortable than those grown in autumn.

Studies on the Correlation between Virus Diseases and Aphid Vectors in Radish Fields (무우바이러스병과 매개진딧물과의 상관관계에 관하여)

  • The relationship between ratio of virus diseases and the population of aphid vectors was studied by planting radishes(Rophanus sativus L. var. Chungsu gungjung) every 10 days and collecting aphids from April to November at Jeonju, Korea in 1982. Alate aphids were collected with yellow pan traps and virus infection ratios were checked with symptoms. The populations of flying aphids showed two peaks, one in the late May and one in the middle October in Jeonju and the population of aphid vectors also showed the same inclination. Of aphid vectors, Myzus persicae, Lipaphis erysimi, Brevicoryne brassicae, and Aphisgossypii were trapped and their percentages to total trapped aphids were $62.82\%(39,260/62,499)$ M. persicae was the most prevalent species and its percentages to aphid vectors were $82.53\%(32,401/39,260)$. High and sudden increase in virus infection ratio was found in spring while the trend in autumn was slow and low. A correlation coefficient between the population of virus vector aphid and virus infection ratio was $r=0.7414^*(\hat{Y}=8.1444+0.0551X)$ in spring and $r=0.9117^{**}(\hat{Y}=10.2590+0.463X)$ in autumn. The symptoms of radish virus diseases appeared approximately 15 days after virus vector aphids had attacked. Virus infection ratios were higher on plots where virus infected plants were reserved than on plots where they were removed.
