This paper addresses issues of perceptual constancy in speech perception through the use of a spatial metaphor for speech sound identity as opposed to a more conventional characterisation with multiple interacting acoustic cues. This spatial representation leads to a correlation between phonetic, acoustic and auditory analyses of speech sounds which can serve as the basis for a model of speech perception based on the general auditory characteristics of sounds. The correlations between the phonetic, perceptual and auditory spaces of the set of English voiceless fricatives /f $\theta$ s $\int$ h / are investigated. The results show that the perception of fricative segments may be explained in terms of 2-dimensional auditory space in which each segment occupies a region. The dimensions of the space were found to be the frequency of the main spectral peak and the 'peakiness' of spectra. These results support the view that perception of a segment is based on its occupancy of a multi-dimensional parameter space. In this way, final perceptual decisions on segments can be postponed until higher level constraints can also be met.
The objective of the study is to discriminate EEG(electroencephalogram) due to emotional changes. Emotion was evoked by the series of auditory stimuli which were selected from the natural sounds in the sound effect collection of compact disc. Seventeen university students participated and experienced positive or negative emotions by six auditory stimuli with intermission between stimuli. Temporal EEG ($T_3$, $T_4$, $T_5$, and $T_6$) was recorded at the same time and a subjective test was performed on the eleven point scales after the experiment. The maximum and minimum scores of the EEG among six stimuli EEG were analyzed for discrimination of emotion. The EEG signals were transformed into feature objects based on scalar intervention model coefficients. Auditory stimulus was considered as intervention variable. They were classified by Discriminant Analysis for each channel. The features showed results with the best classification accuracy of 91.2 % in $T_4$ for auditory stimuli. This study could be extended to establish an algorithm which quantifies and classifies emotions evoked by auditory stimulus using time-series models.
Background and Objectives: The gap prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response has been used to screen tinnitus in an animal model. Here, we examined changes in the auditory late response under various conditions of gap prepulse inhibition. Subjects and Methods: We recruited 19 healthy adults (5 males, 14 females) and their auditory late responses were recorded after various stimuli with or without gap prepulsing. The N1 and P2 responses were selected for analysis. The gap prepulse inhibition was estimated to determine the optimal auditory late response in the gap prepulse paradigm. Results: We found that the gap per se generated a response that was very similar to the response elicited by sound stimuli. This critically affected the gap associated with the maximal inhibition of the stimulus response. Among the various gap-stimulus intervals (GSIs) between the gap and principal stimulus, the GSI of 150 ms maximally inhibited the response. However, after zero padding was used to minimize artifacts after a P2 response to a gap stimulus, the differences among the GSIs disappeared. Conclusions: Overall, the data suggest that both the prepulse inhibition and the gap per se should be considered when using the gap prepulse paradigm to assess tinnitus in humans.

Use of electrical stimulation for diagnosis and treatment of pyhsiolgocial impairment on the auditory system was reported by many researchers since 1800. Unfortunately, there were no standard methods or theoretical bakground for choosing stimulus conditions because of the lack of understanding on the transmission of sound through the auditory pathways. Therefore, if we could find the mechanisms of normal and abnormal functions for the system objectively, it may be possible to establish the conditions for the appropriate treatment This study was devised with three experimental conditions of electrical stimulation(0.1, 1, and 10mA) to verify the effect of electrical stimulation on the auditory system. ABRs and ECochGs were obtained from 3 Guinea Pigs before and after each stimulation, and five parameters were extracted from ABR and ECochG waveforms. The results showed that the mean differences of the first peaks of ABR, I, before and after all the stimulus conditions were significant at the significant level of p<0.05. Also, amplitude of ECochGs peak(AP) showed higher degrees of differences for the electrical stimulation than that of ABRs. Based on the results of this experiment establishment of an electrical model which characterizes the auditory system could be achieved by computer simulation. This will lead to the design of most accurate model for the real auditory system, which provide the quantitive information regarding diagnosis and treatment.

Zero-Crossings with Peak Amplitudes(ZCPA) model motivated by human auditory periphery was proposed to extract reliable features speech signals even in noisy environments for robust speech recognition. In this paper, some practical considerations for digital hardware implementations of the ZCPA model are addressed and evaluated for recognition of speech corrupted by several real world noises as well as white Gaussian noise. Infinite impulse response(IIR) filters which constitute the cochliar filterbank of the ZCPA are replaced by hamming bandpass filters of which frequency responses are less similar to biological neural tuning curves. Experimental results demonstrate that the detailed frequency response of the cochlear filters are not critical to performance. Also, the sensitivity of the model output to the variations in microphone gain is investigated, and results in good reliability of the ZCPA model.
Objective: This study was to identify whether working memory (WM) can be clearly subdivided according to auditory and visual modality. To do this, we administered the most recent and universal clinical WM measures in a mixed psychiatric sample. Methods: A total of 115 patients were diagnosed on the basis of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and with MINI-Plus 5.0, a structured diagnostic interview. WM subtests of Korean version of Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV and Korean version of Wechsler Memory Scale-IV were administered to assess WM. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to observe whether WM measures fit better to a one-factor or two-factor model. Results: CFA results demonstrated that a two factor model fits the data better than one-factor model as expected. Conclusion: Our study supports a modality model of WM, or the existence of modality-specific WM systems, and thus poses a clinical significance of assessing both auditory and visual WM tests.
In this paper, we explore the application of Kodaly hand signs in enhancing children's music education, performances, and auditory assistance technologies. This research focuses on improving the recognition rate of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) models in identifying Kodaly hand sign scales through the integration of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). We developed an enhanced MLP model by augmenting it with additional parameters and optimizing the number of hidden layers, aiming to substantially increase the model's accuracy and efficiency. The augmented model demonstrated a significant improvement in recognizing complex hand sign sequences, achieving a higher accuracy compared to previous methods. These advancements suggest that our approach can greatly benefit music education and the development of auditory assistance technologies by providing more reliable and precise recognition of Kodaly hand signs. This study confirms the potential of parameter augmentation and hidden layers optimization in refining the capabilities of neural network models for practical applications.
