Owing to the depletion of fossil energy, wind power is attracting attention as a promising environmentally friendly alternative energy source, because it is abundant, renewable, and non-polluting. Wind turbines are divided into horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) and vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) according to the direction of the rotating shaft. VAWTs have a low power generation efficiency, but are not affected by the wind direction and, thus, no yaw system is required and their structure is simple. Small VAWTs are attracting much attention because they can generate power even at low wind speeds. In this study, the output voltages and output currents of small VAWTs with gyromill type, hinge type and double door type blades capable of generating power even at low wind speeds were analyzed at variable wind speeds in the range of 1~11 m/s. At the maximum wind speed of 11m/s, the application of the double door type blades achieved 67% and 9% higher wind turbine output voltages than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. As regards the wind turbine output currents, the application of the double door type blades gave rise to 93% and 5% higher results than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. Through this study, the excellent output characteristics and commercialization potential of the double door type blades, which can generate power both at low and high wind speeds, were confirmed.

The electric power industry have recently been building out Smart Grids, a two-way electricity grid that connects power consumers and producers to a network that enables one to respond quickly to any eventuality. The construction of a two-way electricity grid means that the power control process becomes unified, from what used to be separate processes that originate individually from the consumption phase and the production and supply phases. The role of power control that takes place within each section of the power system may be independent. However, this does not mean the independent control sections are operated individually, but are configured to meet a single target and purpose. Each control section possesses enough degree of independency to respond to eventualities that may occur within different stages of the power system, but at the same time, possesses unified system elements for the stability of the entire power system. From this perspective, Smart Grids are widely regarded as the most rational power industry operation plan. A variety of different control and communication systems can be applied for an effective deployment of Smart Grids. Recently, we have seen systems such as PMS(Power Management System) and PAS(Process Automation System) applied in the deployment of Smart Grids, which are developed from the techniques utilized in the industry. The PMS is attracting particular attention for its power operations management ability. In this study, we propose plans for improvement in the rational development of power system controls through case studies of live PMS operations.
Despite the advantages of energy arbitrage using energy storage systems (ESSs), the high cost of ESSs has not attracted storage owners for the arbitrage. However, as the costs of ESS have decreased and the price volatility of the electricity market has increased, many studies have been conducted on energy arbitrage using ESSs. In this study, the existing two-period model is modified in consideration of the ESS cost and risk-free contracts. Optimal investment strategies that maximize the sum of external effects caused by price changes and arbitrage profits are formulated by market participants. The optimal amounts of ESS investment for three types of investors in three different market structures are determined with game theory, and strategies in the form of the mixed-complementarity problem are solved by using the PATH solver of GAMS. Results show that when all market participants can participate in investment simultaneously, only customers invest in ESSs, which means that customers can obtain market power by operating their ESSs. Attracting other types of ESS investors, such as merchant storage owners and producers, to mitigate market power can be achieved by increasing risk-free contracts.

Distributed Generation (DG) is predicted to play a important role in electric power system in the near future. insertion of DG system into existing distribution network has great impact on real-time system operation and planning. It is widely accepted that micro turbine generation (MTG) systems are currently attracting lot of attention to meet customers need in the distributed power generation market In order to investigate the performance of MT generation systems, their efficient modeling is required. This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a MT generation system suitable for grid-connected operation. The system comprises of a permanent magnet synchronous generator driven by a MT. A brief description of the overall system is given, and mathematical models for the MT and permanent magnet synchronous generator are presented. Also, the use of Power electronics in conditioning the power output of the generating system is demonstrated. Simulation studies with MATLAB/Simulink have been carried out in grid-connected operation mode of a DG system. The control strategies for grid connected operation mode of DG system is also presented.
As the 5G service market is expected to grow rapidly, the development of high-power, high-efficiency power amplifiers for the 5G communication infrastructure is indispensable. Gallium nitride (GaN) is attracting great interest as a key device in power devices and integrated circuits due to its wide bandgap, high carrier concentration, high electron mobility, and high-power saturation characteristics. In this study, we investigate the technology trends of Ka-band GaN radio frequency (RF) power devices and integrated circuits for operation in the millimeter-wave band of recent 5G mobile communication services. We review the characteristics of GaN RF high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) devices to implement power amplifiers operating at frequencies around 28 GHz and compare the technology of foreign companies with the device characteristics currently developed by the Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI). In addition, the characteristics of Ka-band GaN monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) power amplifiers manufactured using various GaN HEMT device technologies are reviewed by comparing characteristics such as frequency band, output power, and output power density of integrated circuits. In addition, by comparing the performance of the power amplifier developed by ETRI, the current status and future direction of domestic GaN power devices and integrated circuit technology will be discussed.

Regarding greenhouse gas reduction, BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) is an important technology that can generate its own power in urban buildings based on clean energy resources. In particular, the perovskite material is attracting attention as a BIPV solar cell because it can have various colors and transparency. However, it is not easy to increase both transparency and efficiency factors because solar cell transparency and efficiency are inversely related to each other. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a semi-transparent perovskite solar cell structure that can improve both transparency and efficiency, and evaluate the stability according to international standard.

Recently, 2-dimensional flat light sources have been attracting much attention for its use in LCD backlight applications because of its high luminous efficiency and uniformity. A long-gap discharge, mercury-tree flat fluorescent lamp has been developed, which shows a high brightness ($>5000\;cd/m^2$) and high luminous efficacy (60 lm/W). Additionally, it has a wide operating margin and stable driving condition with the aid of an auxiliary electrode. For driving the lamp, a narrow pulse power to maintain the glow discharge state is required. Since there has been no research for this kind of lamp driving, this paper proposes a newly developed short-pulse, high-voltage lamp-driving scheme. The proposed lamp system uses a ballast with a coupled-inductor in order to raise the short pulse voltage up to the lamp ignition level and to obtain energy-recovery action during the glow discharge mode. The operation principles are presented and also the system performances such as the lighting efficiency, spatial and angular uniformities are evaluated by hardware experiments. The results show that the proposed lighting system is a good candidate for the next-generation of LCD backlight systems.

In this paper, we used LSTM as a method to detect abnormal behavior of motors. We fixed the high layout size to 1 and changed the range of the input values and the neural network structure to see what change in power consumption prediction. Now, as the fourth industrial revolution era, smart factories are attracting attention. All the physical actions of smart factories are done using motors. Continuous monitoring of motor malfunctions helps to detect malfunctions and efficient operation. However, it is difficult to acquire the power consumption constantly due to the influence of the noise. We have experimented with a simple experimental environment, a method of predicting similarity to input data by adjusting the range of the input data or by changing the neural network structure.

This paper presents an electronic ballast using a step down converter, a low frequency inverter for high pressure discharge lamp. The proposed ballast is composed of a full-wave rectifier, a step down converter operated as a current source with power regulation and a low frequency inverter with ignition circuit. The ignition circuit generates high voltage pulse of 1${\sim}$2[kV] peak, 130[Hz]. Moreover, it is able to reignite at regular intervals by protective circuit. As experimental results on the test, lamp voltage, current and consumption power are measured 132.5[V], 7.6[A] and 1,005[W], respectively. It was confirmed that the designed ballast operate the lamp with a constant power.
There has been a deep interest in trying to find better-performing fuel clad motivated by the desire to decrease the likelihood of the reactor barrier failure like what happened in Fukushima in recent years. In this study, the effect of move towards accident tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding as the most attracting concept for improving reactor safety is investigated for SMART modular reactor. These reactors have less production cost, short construction time, better safety and higher power density. The SiC and FeCrAl materials are considered as the most potential candidate for ATF cladding, and the results are compared with Zircaloy cladding material from reactor physics point of view. In this paper, the calculations are performed by generating PMAX library by DRAGON lattice physics code to be used for further reactor core analysis by PARCS code. The differential and integral worth of control and safety rods, reactivity coefficient, power and temperature distributions, and boric acid concentration during the cycle are analyzed and compared from the conventional fuel cladding. The rod ejection accident (REA) is also performed to study how the power changed in response to presence of the ATF cladding in the reactor core. The key quantitative finding can be summarized as: 20 ℃ (3%) decrease in average fuel temperature, 33 pcm (3%) increase in integral rod worth and cycle length, 1.26 pcm/℃ (50%) and 1.05 pcm/℃ (16%) increase in reactivity coefficient of fuel and moderator, respectively.
