  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the perception of and attitude toward dementia and depression among residents in a community. Methods: Data were collected using the questionnaire from 226 residents in Incheon city from February to May, 2017. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe's test to identify differences in perception of and attitude toward dementia and depression. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to identify the correlation between the study variables, and multiple regression was used to identify factors affecting depression. Results: There were significant differences in perception of dementia according to age, education, marital status, and exercise. Also, significant differences in attitude toward dementia were found in occupation, family history of dementia and education about dementia. Depression was significantly different depending on the type of health insurance coverage and alcohol drinking. The scores of perception of dementia and depression were 11.09, 2.37, respectively on a 2-point scale and for attitude toward dementia was 85.94 on a 7-point Likert scale. The perception of dementia was positively correlated with the attitude toward dementia and there were negative correlations between perception of dementia and age and between depression and attitude toward dementia. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that we should improve perception of and attitude toward dementia and reduce depression to prevent and manage dementia effectively.

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to examine the knowledge of, attitude toward, and education requirements for dementia that students majoring in occupational therapy have and to determine the correlations between knowledge of and attitude toward dementia according to the degree of dementia education provided in a university. Methods : From January 2021 to February 2021, 150 students majoring in occupational therapy in Daejeon, Jeollanam-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do were enrolled in this study and surveyed using a questionnaire. The students who participated understood the purpose of this study and agreed to participate. For data analysis, SPSS version 20.0 was used. Results : The subjects scored, on average, 18.64 ± 3.23 of 30 points Knowledge of dementia. The subjects had many correct answers in the items on dementia assessment, diagnosis, and treatment and care, whereas they had few correct answers in the items on the risk factors of dementia. In terms of attitude toward dementia, the subjects scored 37.38 ± 8.32 on the stability subscale and 48.26 ± 9.11 on the knowledge subscale; thus, they had higher scores on the knowledge subscale. The subjects had high educational requirements regarding the cognitive activity and activities of daily living of occupational therapy for dementia. The subjects' knowledge of dementia had a positive correlation with their attitude toward dementia according to the degree of dementia education (p<.05). Conclusion : The students majoring in occupational therapy had high educational requirements of the cognitive activity and activity of daily living for dementia. When they had more education of dementia, their attitude toward dementia had a positive correlation with their knowledge of dementia. Therefore, it is considered that students majoring in occupational therapy need to have professional education in their university curriculum.

Methods: Participants were 115 nurses from the seven geriatric hospitals. Data were collected from September $5^{th}$ through $21^{st}$ in 2018 and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: Person-centered care was significantly different according to satisfaction with income, career of geriatric hospital, application of their opinions, and the satisfaction with hospital managers, administrators and nurse managers. Also person-centered care showed a significant positive correlation with the attitude toward dementia. Predictors of person-centered care were the satisfaction with hospital managers and the attitude toward dementia, which explained 23.0% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the attitude toward dementia and the satisfaction with the hospital organization were related to the person-centered care in geriatric hospitals. Therefore, the strategies to improve the attitude towards dementia should be carried out to enhance the person-centered care among nurses in geriatric hospital.

Results : The health students' dementia policy awareness and knowledge of dementia were high, and their attitudes toward dementia were positive. High knowledge of dementia was influenced by sex, interest in dementia, presence of dementia information, and related volunteer work experience. Positive attitudes toward dementia were related to sex, department, and mode of receiving dementia information. High dementia policy perceptions were associated with interest in dementia and the presence or absence of information on dementia. Positive correlations were found between dementia policy perception and knowledge and attitude toward dementia. Conclusion : According to our study, interest in dementia is increasing owing to the recent dementia safety system. As a result, the dementia policy awareness and knowledge of dementia among college students pursuing health studies were high, and their attitude toward dementia was positive. From these results, we can infer that systematic and continuous education on dementia should be conducted in universities.

  • This study is a cross-sectional survey study aimed at collecting basic data for the development of a program to cultivate a positive attitude toward dementia among people caring for dementia patients. For this study, data were collected from March 1 to March 7, 2022 as a structured questionnaire, and 232 study participants were in their 20s to 60s. The collected data were derived from chi-square test, t-test, and simple regression analysis using the spss 18.0 program. As a result of the analysis, women had higher treatment knowledge for dementia than men, men had higher attitudes toward dementia than women (p<0.01), and people living with dementia patients had higher attitudes than those who gave birth (p<0.01). Attitudes toward dementia were more positive in the family than those with dementia patients (p<0.01). Dementia-related knowledge consists of disease knowledge, treatment knowledge, and nursing knowledge, of which only positive dementia attitude affects dementia treatment knowledge (t=5.29, p<0.01). Based on these results, it is suggested that the provision of accurate knowledge about dementia treatment should be planned first as a nursing program for dementia patients.

  • As the number of the elderly increases, concerns about senile dementia and serious game for dementia are growing. The purpose of this study is to explore the types of attitude toward senile dementia. To identify public attitudes toward senile dementia, we conducted Q methodology. A Q set of potential public attitudes toward senile dementia was identified through literature review. From this, 52 potential public attitudes toward senile dementia were identified. Twenty subjects ranked these explanations as possible public attitudes. The attitudes toward senile dementia were classified as 4 types : 'type1 : idealistic & expectant', 'type 2 : aversive & defensive', 'type 3 : active & realistic', and 'type 4 : responsible & compensatory'. This study revealed that people have different explanatory frameworks for the attitude toward senile dementia.

  • Purpose: Korea is one of the most rapidly aging countries, accompanied by an increasing number of older adults with dementia. Certified-care-assistants are the primary care workers for these older adults. This cross-sectional descriptive study compared the factors influencing care behaviors among Korean and non-Korean certified-care-assistants in Korea. Methods: Participants, 113 Korean certified-care-assistants and 71 non-Korean certified-care-assistants, completed a survey questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to assess dementia knowledge, attitude and care behaviors toward older adults with dementia. To determine the differences in these two groups, t-test was used. A stepwise multiple regression was performed to identify factors related to care behavior. Results: Significant differences in dementia knowledge, attitude and care behavior toward older adults with dementia emerged between Korean and non-Korean certified-care-assistants. Factors influencing care behavior varied by group. Dementia knowledge and education level were the significant factors of care behaviors in Korean certified-care-assistants, whereas attitude toward older adults with dementia was the significant factor in non-Korean certified-care-assistants. Conclusion: Findings indicate that different factors influence the care behavior of two groups. These findings can be utilized to develop certified-care-assistants' training curriculum that needs to be tailored by nationality to improve the quality of care for older adults with dementia.
