  • In this study, the characteristics of a new rock cracking method using steam pressure are briefly presented. The rock cracking method was originally developed as a means to decrease the ground vibrations from underground rock excavations. The validation tests were also conducted by applying the method to an actual rock tunnel under construction. The ground vibrations were measured in the vicinity of the test site. The measured vibration results were compared with the values predicted by an attenuation equation, which had been proposed by a company in Japan. Also, a simple cost assessment for the method was conducted to demonstrate its cost effectiveness in underground tunnel excavations.

  • A design method for the electromagnetic wave absorber with the attenuation over 20 dB at a frequency was formulated. In addition to the matching boundary which is determined by the theoretical equation, several limiting conditions due to the fabrication process were examined. Based on the study on the effects of the variance of the thickness and permittivity on the electromagnetic wave absorbing characteristics, a mean to exclude such effects was also included in the proposed design method. The ranges of variables were limited as the frequency of 9.45 GHz and .epsilon.' = 5 ~ 30, when the effect of .epsilon. " was not considered.

  • In this paper, we study a disturbance observer (DOB) based controller for an EMS(Electro-Magnetic Suspension) system in presence of mass uncertainty and input disturbance. The DOB based controller is employed in order to compensate the modeling uncertainty and attenuate disturbance signals. For the design of DOB based controller, the Jacobain linearization of nonlinear system model equation is used. Computer simulation is carried out for nonlinear model in order to compare the performance of the proposed DOB controller with that of the conventional PID controller. The simulation results show that the substantial improvement in the performance can be achieved by the proposed DOB controller.

  • Impulsive vibration velocity is monitored at the surface and the boundary surface of rocks as various impulsive forces of horizontal and vertical directions were given to rocks which had difference in uniaxial compressive strength for investigate to the vibration velocity of rocks according to the impulsive direction and the monitoring site. The vibration velocity of the boundary surface of rocks was about 2.9 times or much larger than that of the surface at the same scaled distance in the case of horizontal impulsive forces, and was above 4.2 times in the case of vertical impulsive forces. The attenuation exponents of the vibration velocity equations in the surface and the boundary surface of rocks make a vast difference with the impulsive directions, but is makes little difference in the case of the same impulsive direction. The ratio of vibration constants of the surface to the boundary surface of rocks is that square and cube root scaled equation is a range of 2.7∼3.0 and 4.9∼5.0 respectively in the case of horizontal impulsive forces, and is a range of 4.2∼5.7 and 7.7∼11.5 respectively in the case of vertical impulsive forces.

  • The modern infrared (IR) imaging systems use mainly one or more wavelength bands among short wavelength IR (SWIR), middle wavelength IR (MWIR), and long wavelength IR (LWIR) bands. In the process of IR image synthesis and modeling, IR image wavelength-band conversion which transforms arbitrary band image to other band one is required. The wavelength-band conversion procedure includes a temperature estimation process of an object surface. However, in this procedure, an approximated Planck's radiation equation causes errors in estimated temperature. In this paper, we propose an estimation temperature error attenuation method in IR image band conversion procedure. The estimated temperature is corrected with a slope information of radiance according to it. The corrected temperature is used for generation of the other band IR image. The verification of proposed method is demonstrated through the simulation.

  • The performances of the simple expansion, perforated tube, and conical-connector type as an exhaust muffler are shown in this study. Applying a model in which the method of four-pole parameter is used makes theoretical estimation of the insertion loss. Experiment is performed for the measurement of the insertion loss under four cases according to the variation of the tail pipe length. By comparing the theoretical prediction with the experimental results, the validity of the modeling using the method of four-pole parameter is verified. The personal computer simulation programs for the above mentioned theory on the muffler design have been developed and exhaust sound level measurements have been carried out for simple expansion muffler, conical-connector muffler, perforated tube mufflers and the combined type of conical-connector and simple expansion muffler. The measured results for attenuation characteristics of noise for each muffler are compared with the computed theoretical results to verity the confidence and applicable limits of the theoretical equation derived.

  • This study describes a method which can attenuate reaction force effectively for an air spring system composed of an air spring and auxiliary chamber. For the analysis, the nonlinear governing equation of the air spring system is derived. For a performance improvement of the system, change of the heat transfer effect and the mass flow rates is included in the analysis of the air spring system. The simulation study is presented to show the reaction force is changed by variations in heat transfer characteristics and the air spring system of isothermal process has the best performance. As a result, to improve attenuation characteristics of reaction force, a process in the air spring system should be maintained near isothermal process.

  • Current Source(CS) PWM converter is appropriate for the magnet power supply system which requests high power and high precision current control. Input and output filters should be installed to eliminate the current or voltage harmonics caused by the PWM switching for the CS PWM converter. But the input/output filters limit the output DC current range and may destroy the system with filter resonance, and make the system equation more complicated. In this paper, systematic and simple filter design method which considers not only the harmonic attenuation but also the total system good transfer function characteristics in the dc filter. The simulated and experimental results verify the proposed theory. (author). refs., figs., tabs.

  • The shape of a galaxy's spectral energy distribution ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR) wavelengths provides crucial information about the underlying stellar populations, metal contents, and star-formation history. Therefore, analysis of the SED is the main means through which astronomers study distant galaxies. However, interstellar dust absorbs and scatters UV and optical light, re-emitting the absorbed energy in the mid-IR and Far-IR. I present the updated 3D Monte-Carlo radaitive transfer code MoCafe to compute the radiative transfer of stellar, dust emission through a dusty medium. The code calculates the emission expected from dust not only in pure thermal equilibrium state but also in non-thermal equilibrium state. The stochastic heating of very small dust grains and/or PAHs is calculated by solving the transition probability matrix equation between different vibrational, internal energy states. The calculation of stochastic heating is computationally expensive. A pilot study of radiative transfer models of SEDs in clumpy (turbulent), galactic environments, which has been successfully used to understand the Calzetti attenuation curves in Seon & Draine (2016), is also presented.
