Population Dynamics of Corbicula ( Corbicula) japonica Prime from Namdae Stream in Yangyang, Korea (강원도 양양 남대천에서 채집된 일본재첩, Corbicula (Corbicula) japonica Prime의 수산자원학적 연구)

  • Samples of Corbicula ( Corbicula) japonica Prime of Namdae Stream in Gangnung were collected from November 2000 to October 2001. Age of C. (C.) japonica was determined from the rings on the shell, The shell length of the samples ranged from 8 mm to 38 mm. The ring on the shell was formed once a year in March. Von Bertalanffy's growth parameters were estimated using a nonlinear regression method, asyinptotie shell length ($L_{\omega}$) was 48,98 mm, K was 0.20421year, theoretical age at 0 shell length $(t_0)$ was 0.3169 year, and asymptotic total weight ($W_{\omega}$) was 41.37 g. The formula of allomeky between shell length (L, mm) and total weight (W, g) of the brackish water clam was W=3.42$\times$10^{-4}L^{3}. The annual survival rate was estimated at 0.3799, instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality was 0.5007/year, and instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality was 0.46721year. The age at first capture was estimated at 2.1593 year using shell length compositions of the brackish water clam, The current yield-per-recruit at 0.4672/year of fishing mortality was 0.6595 g. F_0.1 was estimated at 0.1865/year, Acceptable biological catch was estimated at 14.4 metric ton.

Numerical Analysis on the Wave Resistance by the Theory of Slender Ships (세장선 이론에 의한 조파저항의 수치 해석)

  • The accurate prediction of the ship wave resistance is very important to design ships which operate satisfactorily in a wave environment. Thus, work should continue on development and validation of methods to compute ship wave patterns and wave resistance. Research efforts to improve the prediction of ship waves and wavemaking resistance are categorized in two major areas. First is the development of higher-order theories to take account of the nonlinear effect of the free surface condition and improved analytical treatment of the body boundary condition. Second is the development of direct numerical methods aimed at solving body and free-surface boundary conditions as accurately as possible. A new formulation of the slender body theory for a ship with constant speed is developed by Maruo. It is quite different from the existing slender ship theory by Vossers, Maruo and Tuck. It may be regarded as a substitute for the Neumann-Kelvin approximation. In present work, the method of asymptotic expansion of the Kelvin source is applied to obtain a new wave resistance formulation in fluid of finite depth. It takes a simple form than existing theory.

Evaluation of Soil Improvement by Carbonate Precipitation with Urease (요소분해효소에 의한 탄산칼슘 침전을 통한 지반 개량 평가)

  • This study presents the experimental results of $CaCO_3$ formation in sand by the Enzyme Induced Carbonate Precipitation (EICP) method. Concentration of $CaCO_3$ with elapsed reaction time is calibrated by standardized procedure by measuring $CO_2$ pressure, and it increases with time towards asymptotic value. Jumunjin sand saturated with EICP solution shows that both shear wave velocity and electrical conductivity sharply increase as the reaction starts to approach to the constant values after 50 hours of reaction time. Urease concentration of 0.5 g/L exhibits 224% higher final shear wave velocity than that of 0.1 g/L. The nucleation models hint that carbonate tends to precipitate not only at grain contacts but also at grain surfaces. Regardless of urease concentration, electrical conductivity and shear wave velocity follow the unique path. The scanning electron microscopic images and X-ray computed tomographic images validate the spatial configuration of produced $CaCO_3$ in soils.

Damping of a taut cable with two attached high damping rubber dampers

  • Due to their low intrinsic damping, stay cables in cable-stayed bridges have often exhibited unanticipated and excessive vibrations which result in increasing maintenance frequency and disruption to normal operations of the entire bridges. Mitigation of undesired cable vibration can be achieved by attaching an external damping device near the anchorage. High Damping Rubber (HDR) dampers have many advantages such as compact size, better aesthetics, easy maintenance, temperature stability, and cost benefits; therefore, they have been widely used to increase cable damping. Although a single damper has been shown to reduce cable vibrations, it is not the most effective method due to geometric constraints. This paper proposes the use of two HDR dampers to improve effectiveness and robustness in suppressing cable vibration. Oscillation parameters of the cable-dampers system were investigated in detail by modeling the stay cable as a taut string and each HDR damper as complex-valued impedance and by using an analytical formulation of the complex eigenvalue problem. The problem of two HDR dampers arbitrarily located along a cable is solved and the solution is discussed. Asymptotic formulas to calculate the damping ratios of the cable with two HDR dampers installed near the anchorage(s) are proposed and compared with the exact solutions. Further, a design example is presented in order to justify the methodology. The results of this study show that when the two HDR dampers are installed close to each other on the same end of the cable, some interaction between the dampers leads to reduced damping ratio. When the dampers are on the opposite ends of the cable, they are effective in increasing damping ratio and can provide better vibration reduction to multiple modes.

Comparative field tests on uplift behavior of straight-sided and belled shafts in loess under an arid environment

  • This study elucidates the uplift behaviors of the straight-sided and belled shafts. The field uplift load tests were carried out on 18 straight-sided and 15 belled shafts at the three collapsible loess sites under an arid environment on the Loess Plateau in Northwest China. Both the site conditions and the load tests were documented comprehensively. In general, the uplift load-displacement curves of the straight-sided and belled shafts approximately exhibited an initial linear, a curvilinear transition, and a final linear region, but did not provide a well defined peak or asymptotic value of the load, and therefore their uplift resistances should be interpreted from the load test results using an appropriate criterion. Nine representative uplift resistance interpretation criteria were used to define the "interpreted failure load" for each of the load tests, and all of these interpreted uplift resistances were normalized by the failure threshold, $T_{L2}$, obtained using the $L_1-L_2$ method. These load test data were compared statistically and graphically. For the straight-sided and belled shafts, the normalized uplift load-displacement curves were respectively established by the plots that related the mean interpreted uplift resistance ratio against the mean displacement at the corresponding interpreted criteria, and the comparisons of the normalized load-displacement curves were made. Specific recommendations for the designs of uplift belled and straight-sided shafts in the loess were given, in terms of both capacity and displacement.

Evaluating stock status of shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) in southern Java and West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, using length-based approach

  • The high economic value and demand for shark fin have significantly increased the vulnerability of the shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus Rafinesque, 1810) population in the Indian Ocean, particularly in the southern region of Java and West Nusa Tenggara. This study utilized a length-based assessment method to evaluate the stock status of I. oxyrinchus. Over a span of eight years (2013-2021), data on length frequency and sex composition were collected. The length-based spawning potential ratio (SPR) was employed to investigate the stock status of the fishery. The findings revealed that I. oxyrinchus exhibited a large body size, with an asymptotic length estimated at 386.86 cm total length and a growth coefficient of 0.04/year . Females were more frequently captured than males, and evidence indicated a declining trend in the size of female sharks. A low SPR value of approximately 6% indicated the overfishing condition of mako shark. To ensure the sustainability of the shortfin mako shark population in the Indian Ocean, it is essential to develop effective management strategies through integrated cooperation among the government, fishers, traders, shark industries, and local communities.

  • Six sigma is the rating that signifies "best in clas", with only 3.4 defects per million units or operations. Higher sigma quality level is generally perceived by customers as improved performance by assigning a correspondingly higher satisfaction score. The process capability indices and the sigma level $Z_{st}$ have been widely used in six sigma industries to assess process performance. Most evaluations on process capability indices focus on point estimates, which may result in unreliable assessments of process performance. In this paper, we consider statistical inference for process capability indices $C_p$, $C_{pk}$ and $C_{pm}$. Also, we study better testing procedure on assessing sigma level $Z_{st}$ and capability index $C_{pm}$, for practitioners to use in determining whether a given process is capable. The proposed method is easy to use and the decision making is more reliable. Whether a process is clearly normal or nonnormal, our bootstrap testing procedure could be applied effectively without the complexity of calculation. A numerical result based on our proposed method is illustrated.

Robust and Non-fragile $H_{\infty}$ Decentralized Fuzzy Model Control Method for Nonlinear Interconnected System with Time Delay (시간지연을 가지는 비선형 상호연결시스템의 견실비약성 $H_{\infty}$ 분산 퍼지모델 제어기법)

  • In general, due to the interactions among subsystems, it is difficult to design an decentralized controller for nonlinear interconnected systems. In this study, the model of nonlinear interconnected systems is studied via decentralized fuzzy control method with time delay and polytopic uncertainty. First, the nonlinear interconnected system is represented by an equivalent Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy model. And the represented model can be rewritten as Parameterized Linear Matrix Inequalities(PLMIs), that is, LMIs whose coefficients are functions of a parameter confined to a compact set. We show that the resulting fuzzy controller guarantees the asymptotic stability and disturbance attenuation of the closed-loop system in spite of controller gain variations within a resulted polytopic region by example and simulations.

Characteristics of Wave Response in a 'Y' Shape Water Channel Resonator Using Resonance of Internal Fluid (내부유체 공진을 이용한 'Y'자 수로형 공명구조물내 파도응답 특성)

  • In this study, the wave responses in a 'Y'shape water channel resonator for amplifying wave energy of a low density has been investigated. A water channel resonator is composed of the long channel and wave guider installed at the entrance. If the period of the incident waves coincides with the natural period of the fluid in a water channel resonator, resonance occurs and the internal fluid amplifies highly to a standing wave form. In order to analyze the wave response in a water channel resonator, we used the matched asymptotic expansion method and boundary element method. The both results were in good agreement with the results of the model test carried out in the two-dimensional wave tank of Jeju National University. Wave guider has an optimum length and installation angle according to the period of the incident wave, and especially effective in enhancing the amplification factor in a period range deviated from the resonance period. It is expected that the wave energy can be effectively extracted by placing the point absorber wave energy converter at the position of anti-node where the maximum wave height is formed by the internal fluid resonance.

Comparative assessment of age, growth and food habit of the black-chinned tilapia, Sarotherodon melanotheron (Rüppell, 1852), from a closed and open lagoon, Ghana

  • Background: The black-chinned tilapia, Sarotherodon melanotheron, is the most abundant fish species in the Nakwa (an open lagoon) and Brenu (a closed lagoon) in the Central Region of Ghana. Aspects of the life history characteristics and the ecology of the fish populations in both lagoons were studied to assess the bio-ecological status of this important resource. Methods: Fish samples were obtained from fishermen that fish on the Nakwa and Brenu lagoons using cast, drag and gill nets. The age of the fish was assessed from otoliths analysis and its growth modelled following the von Bertalanffy growth function. Morphometric characteristics of the fish populations were analysed using power regression and ANOVA for parameters comparisons, and Student's t test to determine whether species grew isometrically. The percentage occurrence method was used to analyse the stomach contents of the fish. Results: A total of 382 fish samples from both lagoons were measured, comprising 209 from Nakwa lagoon and 176 from Brenu lagoon. The size and weight of fish samples ranged between 3.9-11.5 cm total length and 1.0-27.3 g for Nakwa Lagoon and 5.6-12.8 cm total length and 3.2-29.8 g for the Brenu Lagoon. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞ = 12.04 cm and K = 2.76/year for the Nakwa Lagoon samples and L∞ = 13.44 cm and K = 3.27/year for Brenu Lagoon samples. Daily otolith incremental rate ranged from 0.01-0.03 mm per day to 0.01-0.02 mm per day for Nakwa and Brenu lagoons, respectively. Stomach content analysis of the fish samples revealed that the species are planktivorous and the range of food varied between the lagoons. Green algae were the most prevalent food item in the stomachs of the fish samples from Nakwa with the frequency of 69% whilst diatoms (80.5%) were most prevalent phytoplanktonic food item for the fish in Brenu lagoon. Conclusions: The estimates of asymptotic length for the species in both lagoons are close to known values of the species length at first sexual maturity and points to intensive fishing pressure. As a consequence, a comprehensive sample-based survey is required in both lagoons to derive estimates of management reference points. The results of the stomach content analysis are beneficial to the construction of diet matrix for ecosystem models of the two systems.
