  • P/2010 A2, a main-belt asteroid having comet-like dust trail was discovered in January 2010, but the origin of the trail is controversial. Moreno et al. (2010) reported water-ice sublimation as a mechanism for the comet-like activity, whereas other researches (Jewitt et al. 2010; Snodgrass et al. 2010) stated that impact collision contributed to the dust trail. For asteroids are categorized based on spectral shape, optical observation using different color filters makes it possible to determine the taxonomic type of P/2010 A2 nucleus, thus gives an answer to the question of activation mechanism of the object. In this presentation, we report multiband observation of P/2010 A2 in January and March 2010 with 1-meter telescope of Ishigaki-Jima Astronomical Observatory. We employed three broadband filters of g', Rc, and Ic. In this presentation, we focus on the data acquisition, the reduction and the derivation of the reflectance spectrum of debris in the trail. Finally we discuss the potential cause of dust ejection from this asteroid.

  • We report the results of our study for ascertaining whether Ganui-dae built in the Josen Dynasty actually performed an astronomical role or not. The Ganui-dae was the first astronomical structure built as a part of the state astronomical undertakings by King Se-Jong. Our analysis was based on the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. At first we extracted the records regarding Ganui-dae from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and then classified them under six heads according to their astronomical meaning and historical significance. From this analysis we found that the Ganui-dae performed the actual astronomical role. In addition, the provisional offices and peoples mentioned in the records show the astronomical correlation. Generally, when taking into account the functional side of the records, the Ganui-dae was related with the observation. Therefore, the Ganui-dae was the space for the astronomical activity. In conclusion, the Ganui-dae was built for the purpose of the astronomical activity.

  • The Goheung radio interferometer with three 1.8-m antennas has been installed at National Youth Space Center in Goheung, Korea. The interferometric observation of the Sun using the Goheung radio interferometer was carried out and the observed data was analysed to construct the radio contour map of the Sun in 2014. The specifications of Goheung radio interferometer and the synthesized interferometer map of the Sun are provided. As a science activity center for youth, we currently provide students some experimental activities based on the principle of radio observation and interferometer. Our goal is to encourage youth to be interested in astronomy by engaging real experience of radio observation and constructing a synthesized interferometer map with observed data.

  • In this talk, we introduce the Lee Sang Gak Telescope (LSGT), a 0.43m telescope that can be operated remotely. This telescope was installed at the Siding Spring Observatory in 2015 October, and since then, it has been operated through a robotic reservation system, remotely from Korea. This telescope is now being used for educational and research activities of SNU Astronomy program. By placing the telescope at a place with an excellent astro-climate in Australia, the observation class activity can include objects in the southern hemisphere to the magnitude limit of V=20 mag at an exposure time of a few minutes. For example, Cepheid stars in Magellanic clouds can be observed during a class activity for constructing the classical Cepheid light curves that has been a key distance measure technique. Research activities such as transient observation and monitoring observation of AGN are possible, and we are currently running a high cadence supernovae search program by monitoring nearby galaxies intensively (see a presentation by C. Choi). The installation of the telescope was made possible from a support from the Seoul.

  • Similarly to other cluster of galaxies previously classified as cooling flow systems, the Chandra observation of MKW 3s reveals that this object has a complex X-ray structure hosting both a X-ray cavity and a X-ray filament. Unlike the other clusters, however, the temperature map of the core of MKW 3s shows the presence of extended regions of gas heated above the radially averaged gas temperature at any radius. As the cluster does not show evidences for ongoing major mergers Mazzotta et al. suggest a connection between the heated gas and the activity of the central AGN. Nevertheless, due to the lack of high quality radio maps, this interpretation was controversial. In this paper we present the results of two new radio observations of MKW 3s at 1.28 GHz and 604 MHz obtained at the GMRT. Together with the Chandra observation and a separate VLA observation at 327 MHz from Young, we show unequivocal evidences for a close connection between the heated gas region and the AGN activity and we briefly summarize possible implications.

  • The purpose of this study was to restore So-ganui(小簡儀), which is a unique astronomical instrument during Sejong period, so that its educational application can be sought. To achieve it, researcher researched the observation principle of our ancestors and the structure of So-ganui, and then restored So-ganui. The result is as following. First, So-ganui is the astronomical observation instrument which can not only measure the position of the celestial bodies in terms of function but also find out the height and distance of topography, and get the time. Second, restoration So-ganui is suitable for the students to learn as an inquiry activity of the observation information in the science curriculum and it would be used as the learning materials for the proper understanding of the science and measurement principle of our ancestors. This study would contribute to raising the level of pride in our scientific culture for the students and succeed the heritage of the science and culture.

  • The aim of this research is to reveal the spatial distribution of the star formation activity of nearby galaxies by comparing CO molecular emission lines with the large area observation in far-infrared (FIR) lines. We report the imaging observations of NGC 253 by FIR forbidden lines via FIS-FTS and CO molecular lines from low to high excitation levels with ASTE, which are good tracers of star forming regions or photo-dissociation regions, especially spiral galaxies, in order to derive the information of the physical conditions of the ambient interstellar radiation fields. The combination of spatially resolved FIR and sub-mm data leads to the star formation efficiency within galaxy. The ratio between the FIR luminosity and molecular gas mass, $L_{FIR}/M_{H_2}$, is expected to be proportional to the number of stars formed in the galaxy per unit molecular gas mass and time. Moreover the FIR line ux shows current star formation activity directly. Furthermore these can be systematic and statistical data for star formation history and evolution of spiral galaxies.

  • We performed a monitoring campaign of a Jupiter-Family comet 17P/Holmes, which underwent the dramatic outburst on 23.3 October 2007 at $r_h=2.44AU$, to investigate the secular change in activity and subsequent physical properties of the inner dust coma before and after the 2014 perihelion passage. The monitoring observation was carried out over two years: from May to July 2013, from July to November 2014, and January 2015 with ~weekly cadence. We conducted photometry monitoring in Rc band using four ground-based telescopes, which are the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory 105cm telescope, the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory 50cm telescope, the Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory 2m telescope, and the T30 51cm i-telescope, respectively. In order to examine the dust production rate, we put a constraint upon the physical distance from the center of the nucleus as rho=2500km and conducted aperture photometry. We found that the average absolute Rc magnitude over the period between July to November 2014 was mR(1,1,0)~12.29, which was approximately 1.5 magnitudes fainter than those of 2013 data. Accordingly, comet 17P/Holmes seemed to become dormant, although a minor eruption was detected on January 26, 2015. In this presentation, we will introduce our ongoing project for 17P/Holmes and discuss why the nucleus becomes dormant within one orbital period.
