  • A method of stochastic dynamic analysis of suspension bridge subjected to random wind loads has been developed in this paper. Example analyses are carried out by mode superposition method(MSM), mode acceleration method(MAM) and advanced mode acceleration method(AMAM) in frequency domain for the Nam-Hae Bridge. In this study the statistical characterics of random wind loads we assumed to be Gaussian stationary zero mean processes. The considered structural response quanties are displacements, shear forces and bending moments. The mean extreme responses are approximately calculated by three times of standard deviations. The followings are the conclusions from this study. 1. Numerical results which obtained by three methods of computer program developed in this paper agree reasonably well when the numbers of modes increase. 2. AMAM is simple, accurate, economic and reliable method compared with the MSM and the MAM.

  • In this paper, robust vibration control of a one-link flexible robot arm based on variable structure system is discussed. We derive dynamic equations of it using a Lagrangian assumed modes method based on Bernoulli-Euler Beam theory. The optimal sliding surface is designed and the problem of chattering is also solved by the adoption of a continuous control law within a small neighborhood of the switching hyperplane.

  • This paper presents a sliding mode controller based on variable structure for the tip position control of a single-link flexible manipulator. Dynamic equations of a single-link flexible manipulator are derived from the Euler-Lagrange equation using a Lagrangian assumed modes method based on Bernoulli-Euler Beam theory. Simulation results are presented to show the validity of the system modeling, controller design.

  • The structural dynamic responses by wind load consist of alongwind, acrosswind and torsional behavior. Specially, dynamic alongwind response can be obtained from theoretical approach presented by Davenport, Vellozzi and Cohen. Generally the structural dynamic alongwind response can be obtained using the approximate analysis, under the condition that only the first mode shape of the structure is considered and the mode shape is assumed to be a linear function. In this paper, the dynamic alongwind responses are performed by using spectrum of longitudinal velocity fluctuations presented by Davenport and Kaimal, respectively.

  • The effect of plastic deformation in an interfacial crack is considered. Yield zones are assumed to have the form of a strip along the interface. The crack is subjected to mode III loads at infinity and lies along the interface of two semi-infinite planes with different material properties. The size of the yield zones, the relation between the size of the yield zone and CTOD are obtained in a closed form solution. The J integral also can be obtained in a closed form Solution.

On Mode Correlation of Solar Acoustic Oscillations

  • In helioseismology it is normally assumed that p-mode oscillations are excited in a statistically independent fashion. Unfortunately, however, this issue is not clearly settled down in that two experiments exist, which apparently look in discrepancy. That is, Appourchaux et al. (2000) looked at bin-to-bin correlation and found no evidence that the assumption is invalid. On the other hand, Roth (2001) reported that p-mode pairs with nearby frequencies tend to be anti-correlated, possibly by a mode-coupling effect. This work is motivated by an idea that one may test if there exists an excess of anticorrelated power variations of pairs of solar p-modes. We have analyzed a 72-day MDI spherical-harmonic time series to examine temporal variations of p-mode power and their correlation. The power variation is computed by a running-window method after the previous study by Roth (2001), and then distribution function of power correlation between mode pairs is produced. We have confirmed Roth's result that there is an excess of anti-correlated p-mode pairs with nearby frequencies. On the other hand, the amount of excess was somewhat smaller than the previous study. Moreover, the distribution function does not exhibit significant change when we paired modes with non-nearby frequencies, implying that the excess is not due to mode coupling. We conclude that the origin of this excess of anticorrelations may not be a solar physical process, by pointing out the possibility of statistical bias playing the central role in producing the excess.

  • An airborne radar is an essential aviation electronic system of the helicopter to perform various missions in all-weather environments. This paper presents the conceptual design results of the multi-mode pulsed Doppler radar system testbed model for helicopter. Due to the inherent flight nature of the hovering vehicle which is flying in low-altitude and low speed, as well as rapid maneuvering, the moving clutters from the platform should be suppressed by using a special MTD (Moving Target Detector) processing. For the multi-mode radar system model design, the flight parameters of the moving helicopter platform were assumed: altitude of 3 Km, average cruising velocity of 150knots. The multi-mode operation capability was applied such as short-range, medium-range, and long-range depending on the mission of the vehicle. The nominal detection ranges is 30 Km for the testbed experimental model, but can be expanded up to 75 Km for the long range weather mode. The detection probability of each mode is also compared in terms of the signal-to noise ratio of each mode, and the designed radar system specifications ate provided as a design results.

Analysis of non-homogeneous orthotropic plates using EDQM

  • Element based differential quadrature method (EDQM) has been applied to analyze static, stability and free vibration of non-homogeneous orthotropic rectangular plates of variable or stepped thickness. The Young's modulus and the density are assumed to vary in exponential form in X-direction whereas the thickness is assumed to vary linear, parabolic or exponential variation in one or two directions. In-plane loading is assumed to vary linearly. Various combinations of clamped, simply supported and free edge conditions (regular and irregular boundary) have been considered. Continuous plates could also be handled with ease. In this paper, formulation for equilibrium, buckling and free vibration problems is discussed and several numerical examples are solved using EDQM and compared with the published results.

  • This paper presents design and analysis of step-down piezoelectric transformer for application to AC-adapters. These transformers are consist of rectangular type and disk type multilayered piezoelectric ceramic plate. This piezoelectric transformer operated in third thickness resonance vibration mode. Finite element methode(FEM) was used for analysing transformer. Vibration mode and electric field of piezoelectric transformer were simulated at resonance frequency. As results, rectangular type transformer's output voltage was higher than the disk type. But disk type transformer's current was lagger than rectangular type. These results are assumed that disk type transformer's mixed vibration mode influence transformer's output characteristics. From these results, we expect that disk type piezoelectric transformer is more adoptable than rectangular plate type piezoelectric transformer for AC adapters.

  • Up to now, there has been a lot of researches on the sliding mode control which has the insensitive characteristics to the variations of plant parameters, nonlinearities and external disturbances. One difficulty in applying the sliding mode control is the need for the knowledge of the full-state vector. The use of state observer is a natural step towards the relaxation of this condition. However, the exact plant-modeling is assumed to be known. Recently, there has been a remarkable advance in the microprocessor and one can construct the controller which could not realize due to hardware restriction in the past. Therefore in this paper, the PID sliding mode controller which has only one output feedback signal is suggested by means of microprocessor and the performance of electro-hydraulic servosystem compensated with this controller is proved.
