  • Matrix/Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization (M/SALDI) mass spectrometry of polypropylene glycol and polystyrene, directly deposited on graphite plate, is demonstrated. Graphite plate is effective both as an en-ergy transfer medium and robu st sampling support for LDI of polymers. Mass spectra ofpolymers can be easily obtained due to homogeneous distribution on graphite surface and their ion signals are long-lived by large ef-fective desorption volume enough to investigate M/SALDI process.

  • The application of abrasive-assisted high energy water-jet was investigated as a possible new method of cutting wood. In this study the maximum cutting speeds for species of various wood density were determined and water-jet machining characteristics were investigated for sixteen Korean domestic species. The maximum cutting speed ranged from 200 to 750 mm/min. The results indicate that wood density affects machining characteristics such as maximum cutting speed, surface roughness, and kerf width. Roughness of surface generated increased and kerf width decreased as penetration depth increased.

  • Nanostructed high energy Nd-Fe-B based bulk magnet can be prepared by hot-working process (hot press and die-upset) from melt-spun amorphous or nanocrystalline powder.[1] Recently, we have investigated a modified method, current-applied pressure-assisted (CAPA) process, to produce nanocrystalline isotropic and anisotropic NdFeB magnets. The process consists of current-applied pressing the melt-spun powders to obtain isotropic precursor subsequent current-applied deforming the precursor to obtain textured magnet.[2-3] (omitted)
