On Robustness of Response Surface Designs

  • One of the important properties of a 'good' response surface design is that the design should be insensitive to wild observations. In this note, a measure of sensitivity to wild observations is studied. It is shown that designs are made robust to wild observations by making $Tr[X'X)^{-1}M]$ small where M is a moment matrix over some region of interest. The proposed criterion is compared with that suggested by Box and Draper. Some about robust two-variable response surface designs are given.

Efficient Mechanical System Optimization Using Two-Point Diagonal Quadratic Approximation in the Nonlinear Intervening Variable Space

  • For efficient mechanical system optimization, a new two-point approximation method is presented. Unlike the conventional two-point approximation methods such as TPEA, TANA, TANA-1, TANA-2 and TANA-3, this introduces the shifting level into each exponential intervening variable to avoid the lack of definition of the conventional exponential intervening variables due to zero-or negative-valued design variables. Then a new quadratic approximation whose Hessian matrix has only diagonal elements of different values is proposed in terms of these shifted exponential intervening variables. These diagonal elements are determined in a closed form that corrects the typical error in the approximate gradient of the TANA series due to the lack of definition of exponential type intervening variables and their incomplete second-order terms. Also, a correction coefficient is multiplied to the pre-determined quadratic term to match the value of approximate function with that of the previous point. Finally, in order to show the numerical performance of the proposed method, a sequential approximate optimizer is developed and applied to solve six typical design problems. These optimization results are compared with those of TANA-3. These comparisons show that the proposed method gives more efficient and reliable results than TANA-3.

Dynamic Optimization Algorithm of Constrained Motion

  • The constrained motion requires the determination of constraint force acting on unconstrained systems for satisfying given constraints. Most of the methods to decide the force depend on numerical approaches such that the Lagrange multiplier method, and the other methods need vector analysis or complicated intermediate process. In 1992, Udwadia and Kalaba presented the generalized inverse method to describe the constrained motion as well as to calculate the constraint force. The generalized inverse method has the advantages which do not require any linearization process for the control of nonlinear systems and can explicitly describe the motion of holonomically and/or nongolonomically constrained systems. In this paper, an explicit equation to describe the constrained motion is derived by minimizing the performance index, which is a function of constraint force vector, with respect to the constraint force. At this time, it is shown that the positive-definite weighting matrix in the performance index must be the inverse of mass matrix on the basis of the Gauss's principle and the derived differential equation coincides with the generalized inverse method. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated by means of two numerical applications.

Sequential Analysis of Earth Retaining Structures Using p-y Curves for Subgrade Reaction

  • The sequential behavior of earth retaining structure is investigated by using soil springs in elasto -plastic soil. Mathematical model that can be used to construct the p-y curves for subgrade modulus is proposed by using piecewise linear function. The excavation sequence of retaining wall is analyzed by the beam -column method. Reliability on the developed computer program is verfied through the comparison between the prediction and the in -situ measuidments. It is concluded that the proposed method simulates well the construction sequence and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of deflections of anchored wall excavation. Based on the results the proposed method can be effectively used for the evaluation of the relative importance of the parameters employed in a sensitivity analysis.

A Study on the Shear Behavior of Sands on the Geomembranes (지오멤브레인 상의 모래의 전단거동에 관한 연구)

  • The shear behavior of any interface is a function of the fundamental properties of both materials at the interface. This study aimed at investigating the effect of planar surface roughness on the stress-horizontal displacement curve at theinterfaces composed of various geomembrane textures and granular materials. In addition, the extent of surfacialscarring on smooth geomembranes against granular materials during shearing induced by plowing effect was studied. It wasobserved that the displacements required to achieve peak and residual interface resistance, and the stress-displacementcurve at the interface vary greatly with the surface roughness of geomembrane. Quantification of surface roughnessvariations on smooth geomembrane due to plowing effect showed that the surfacial scarring during shearing by the soilparticles is directly related to both the normal stress and the angularity of the soil particles at the interface. The findingsof this study can be used to provide the useful information for the design and selection of counterface materials.

  • Farmers need alternatives for weed control due to the desire to reduce chemicals used in farming. However, conventional mechanical cultivation cannot selectively remove weeds located in the seedline between crop plants and there are no selective heribicides for some crop/weed situations. Since hand labor is costly , an automated weed control system could be feasible. A robotic weed control system can also reduce or eliminate the need for chemicals. Currently no such system exists for removing weeds located in the seedline between crop plants. The goal of this project is to build a real-time , machine vision weed control system that can detect crop and weed locations. remove weeds and thin crop plants. In order to accomplish this objective , a real-time robotic system was developed to identify and locate outdoor plants using machine vision technology, pattern recognition techniques, knowledge-based decision theory, and robotics. The prototype weed control system is composed f a real-time computer vision system, a uniform illumination device, and a precision chemical application system. The prototype system is mounted on the UC Davis Robotic Cultivator , which finds the center of the seedline of crop plants. Field tests showed that the robotic spraying system correctly targeted simulated weeds (metal coins of 2.54 cm diameter) with an average error of 0.78 cm and the standard deviation of 0.62cm.

  • Most operation related to the application granular agrochemicals in korea are manual and labour consuming. As a multipurpose granular applicator, a pneumatic granular applicator that can be attached to conventional ride -on machines for paddy field was designed in this study. Experiments and simulations were carried out for determine in the design factors with one fertilizer (DongBu 21-17-17) and one pesticide (SamKong Ivi). The maximum terminal velocity of granular chemicals was estimated as 14.2m/s. A better distribution pattern was obtained at the diffuser having only deflectors without dividing guides. The diffuser spacing 1.0m for the fertilizer and the diffuser spacing 0.8m for the pesticide at the boom height over 0.80m were acceptable for the uniform distribution. In the case that the forward speed of ride-on machines was 0.7m/s, the groove opening and the roller speed of the selected metering device were13mm -15mm at 2 rps for the fertilizer, and 9 mm-11mm at 0.25rps or the pesticide. This study suggested a method of developing a pneumatic applicator for granular agrochemicals.

A Study on the Actual Status of Professors in Department of Food and Nutrition at Junior College (전문대학 식품영양과의 교수실태에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to propose the way to give substantial education for the students of Departments of Food and Nutrition in Junior College. Questionnaires were gathered from the professors of the Departments of Food and Nutrition in Junior Colleges. The results of this study could be summarized as follows. 1. The professors and assistant teachers appointed in Department of Food and Nutrition in Junior Colleges were insufficient in number showing the sufficiency proportion of 35.8% and 61% respectively. 2. Part time lecturers took charge of lectures on major subject up to 27%. 3. The academic backgrounds of all professors were above a master's degree, and the number of professors who were In the doctor's course and who had got doctor's degree amounted to 31.5% and 27.9% respectively. 4. The number of professors who had majored in the course of Food and Nutrition at university or at graduate school was the most and that of Food Engineering ranked the next. 5. The number of professors having careers in the fields of food and nutrition before the appointment to professor amounted to 32%. 6. The number of professors having domestic training managed by the Education Ministry amounted to 67.8%, but those having foreign training amounted to only 8.3%. 7. The number of domestic scientific journals subscribed by one professor was on an average 2.8, but that of foreign was only 0.8. 8. Each professor associated on an average 2.7 kinds of academic society, and published 3.6 pieces of thesis in the last three years. 9. The professors were comparatively satisfied with their present occupations, but they were dissatisfied with such points as deficiency of educational postulates, insufficient income, low level in intellectual faculties of their students and lack of social understanding.

  • Excessive torsional behavior of asymmetric building structures is observed to be the main cause of the poor seismic performance. Concepts of current design provisions for torsion are based on the assumption that the strength of the lateral load resisting elements can be adjusted without changing their stiffness. This paper investigates inelastic torsional effects of multi-story high rise residential building in Korea on increase of strength demand and ductility of members using some methods published in literature. The methods analyze the reduction of strength and member ductility resulting from torsional mechanisms. This study shows that use of these concepts control inelastic torsion during preliminary seismic design of multi-story building of irregular plans.

  • 한글의 파열자음(Plosive Consonants of stop consonants)인 ㄱ, R, ㅋ, ㅃ, ㅍ이나, ㄷ, ㄸ, ㅌ의 삼중 구별은 외국어에서는 찾아 볼수 없는 한글 고유의 특성이라고 생각되어 왔다. 이는 한국인 학자에게 뿐만 아니라 외국인 학자에게도 크나큰 관심사가 되어 왔다. 그 가장 큰 이유중의 하나가 소위 파열자음의 생리기전면에서 볼때, p,b나 k,g의 구별이 단순히 무성(Voiceless)대 유성(Voiced)의 차이냐 또는 근육의 힘의 차이냐 하는 문제가 오랫동안 국제학계에서 논난의 대상이 되어왔기 때문이다. 둘째로는 기이하게도 한글의 파열자음은 모두 무성자음으로 외국어에서 볼수있는 유성대 무성의 대조는 없으며, 다만 근육의 gal의 대조가 있지 않을까 생각되어 왔기 때문이다. 그러나 현재까지는 이 세가지 종류의 한글파열자음 발음시의 생리기전의 차이를 규명한 연구가 없었다. 저자는 이점에 착안하여 미국 위스컨신대학교 언어병리학 및 생리학 실험실에서 고도로 발달된 최신 연구기구를 이용하여 한글파열 자음 발음시의 생리기전의 차이를 규명하였다. 서론 연구방법, 연구결과, 결론에 관한 자세한 내용은 영문초록에 기술되어 있다.
