A study on the clothing conformity behavior of female consumers - focused on the vanity and clothing consumption value - (성소비자의 의복 동조행동에 대한 연구 - 허영심, 의복소비가치를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to closely describe the meaning of the clothing conformity behavior of female consumers in today's society. In this process, the vanity scale was used as a precedence variable, on the other hand, clothing consumption value and information search behavior was used as outcome variable, which has an effect on the clothing conformity behavior. The subjects were 300 females who live in Seoul and Kyung-gi. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, Factor analysis, Regression and ANOVA using SPSS program. The results were as follows. First, the vanity scale was classified into four factors, a concern and a positive view for each achievement and appearance. Clothing consumption value was divided into five factors; fashion, appearance attractiveness, emotional, social and functional clothing consumption value. Clothing conformity behavior was classified into three factors; normal, informational, and identified conformity factor. Second, various vanity scales influenced the clothing conformity behavior factors. In particular, concern for achievement and appearance were more important factors to clothing conformity behavior. Among six clothing consumption values, fashion was a more significant factor affected by clothing conformity behavior. Also, various conformity behaviors influenced the information search behaviors. Finally, according to age, school record, and pocket money, there were significant differences in clothing conformity behaviors and vanity factors.

A Study on the Vanity Scale -Correlation with Materialism and Fashion Orientation- (Vanity Scale에 대한 연구 -물질주의와 패션성향과의 상관성-)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between vanity and materialism and fashion orientation. This study identified underlying factors of vanity and then grouped respondents into clusters based on the low factors of vanity. This study also examined their materialism and fashion orientation according to clusters. Data were gathered by surveying university students living in Seoul metropolitan area using convenient sampling, and 313 questionnaires were used in the statistical analysis. In analyzing data, factor analysis, cluster analysis, t test, correlation, and one-way ANOVA were conducted. Regarding vanity, low factors, 1) a concern id. physical appearance, 2) a positive view of physical appearance, 3) a concern for achievement, and 4) a positive view of achievement, were identified. Correlation analysis showed all four factors of vanity were significantly related with underlying dimension! of materialism and fashion orientation. Based on the factor scores, three clusters were identified. There were also significant differences in the dimensions of materialism and fashion orientation according to the clusters.

A Study on the Effect of the Well-being Awareness on the Satisfaction of University Dormitory Foodservice (웰빙의식이 대학 기숙사 급식 만족도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to research the perception and concern of university students with regard to well-being, and how these affected their assessment and satisfaction of university dormitory foodservice. Therefore, a survey was administered to 328 college students that use a dormitory foodservice. The results of the survey are as follows: First, the more positive the self-centered and society-centered values in relation to well-being, the greater both the concern and will to practice well-being through the eating well-being foods. Second, the attitude toward well-being food was positively correlated with the taste, amount, temperature, appearance and shape of dishes. Third, unlike the will to practice well-being through the eating well-being foods, the greater the concern about foods of well-being, the more positive was the effect on the general satisfaction with the foodservice. The greater the satisfaction with the attributes of a foodservice had a substantial influence on the general satisfaction with the foods. That is to say, the taste and type of dishes played a key role in the general satisfaction with the foods. Fourth, the concern in relation to foods of well-being had no measurable influence on the decisions with regards to the satisfaction of a foodservice or on the intention to reuse that foodservice. In addition, in relation to the degree of satisfaction with the attributes and use of a foodservice, the taste, type, appearance and shape of dishes had an important impact on the decisions to use and reuse a foodservice. Fifth, the general satisfaction with the meals served by a foodservice operation had a measurable influence on the satisfaction with, and intention to reuse that foodservice.

A Study on Consumption Emotion of the Appearance Management Behaviors in University Students (남녀대학생의 외모관리행동에 관한 소비감정 연구)

  • Attention to appearance is a common concern for all. Images created by appearance play an important role in judging people in terms of social life in contemporary society. This study investigated general behaviours of appearance management behaviours of both male and female college students, and categorised consumption emotion experienced by appearance management. In this regards, it was examined how consumers' psychological mechanism of consumption emotions influences consumers' satisfaction and their behavioural intentions. The main results are as follows: First, female students invest more time and money into appearance management compare to male students and have a higher level of attention. Secondly, both male and female students experience a variety of consumption emotions in appearance management behaviours. According to gender, female students show a higher level of positive and negative consumption emotions than male students. Thirdly, there are five emotional types (Confidence, Annoyance, Refreshment, Enjoyment, Anxiety) as the result of the consumption emotional typology in terms of appearance management behaviours of male and female university students. Fourthly, there are different emotional groups which influence consumers' satisfaction or behavioural intention according to gender in appearance management behaviour. In general, emotional groups such as 'Confidence, Delight and Anxiety' have a positive influence on consumers' satisfaction and behavioral intention, and 'Annoyance' composed of negative emotions have negative influence. In this respect, this research can contribute to beauty product development and marketing strategy with reflecting consumption emotion, and better understanding of consumption culture of university students which plays a pivotal role in appearance management behavior.

The Effects of the Internalization of Socio-cultural Values Relating to Appearance on Adolescents' Body Images and Clothing Behaviors (외모에 대한 사회문화적 가치관의 내면화가 청소년들의 신체이미지와 의복행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The proposes of this study were to exam the effects of internalization of sociocultural values toward appearance on adolescents' body image and clothing behaviors, and to analyze these effects by adolescents' sex and age variables. The research method was survey and the subjects were 447 male and female adolescents in Daejeon, Korea. The questionnaire consisted of 4 measuring instruments; internalization of sociocultural values toward appearance, body image, clothing behaviors, and demographic attributions. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, t-test, variance analysis, Duncan's multiple range test, using SPSS program. The results are as follows. First, most of adolescents showed positive attitude on sociocultural values toward appearance, and female and high school students revealed higher level of internalization than male and middle school students. Second, as a result of factor analysis, 3 factors emerged in body image(appearance interest, appearance evaluation, and weight concern) and 4 factors emerged in clothing behaviors(clothing interest & psychological dependency, clothing ostentation, clothing conformity, and clothing comfort). Third, internalization of sociocultural values toward appearance had important effects on adolescents' body image and clothing behaviors; the adolescents who had high level internalization showed more interest on their appearance and weight and higher clothing interest & psychological dependency and clothing ostentation and lower clothing comfort than other adolescents who had middle or low level internalization. Forth, internalization of sociocultural values toward appearance showed many different effects on body image and clothing behaviors by adolescents' sex and age variables.

The Effects of Perception of Body Shape, Self-esteem, Body Cathexis, and Body Image on Fashion Leadership by Korean and Japanese Female College Students (한국과 일본여대생의 체형인식과 자아존중감, 신체만족도 및 신체이미지가 유행선도력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study compares the perceived body image of female college students in Korea and Japan as well as explains the difference in the level of self-esteem, body cathexis, body image and fashion leadership based on nationality and body. The sense of fashion leadership affected by these factors was also analyzed. A high ratio of Korean and Japanese female students perceived themselves as obese compared to actual body physique. It was shown that body was highly distorted. They showed a comparatively low level of satisfaction with appearance in contrast to their high interest in their appearance and weight. Thin bodied individuals showed a high level of self-esteem and body cathexis; however, persons with an obese body showed a low level of body cathexis. They showed high interest in appearance regardless of body physique; however, they remain unsatisfied with their appearance. Individuals with an obese body and a standard somatotype showed a high concern with weight. A high fashion opinion leadership was reciprocal to a high interest in appearance and satisfaction with appearance. Korean female students showed an indirect positive effect on fashion opinion leadership through body cathexis, self-esteem, interest in appearance, and satisfaction with appearance. A thin body showed a positive effect on fashion opinion leadership and an obese body had a negative effect. Fashion innovativeness was directly influenced persons with a high degree of self-esteem and interest in appearance. Japanese female students were directly affected by fashion innovativeness; however, Korean female students were indirectly affected by fashion innovativeness through self-esteem and interest in appearance.

The Effects of Body Image on Apparel Management Behavior and Weight(Figure) Control Behavior (성인여성의 바디이미지가 의복관리행동과 체중(몸매)관리행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze body image of women and investigate the relationships of apparel management behavior and weight(figure) control behavior. To achieve the purposes, a questionnaire was conducted to 329 females from October 5 to October 25, 2011. The final data were analyzed with spss 17.0 program. The results were as follows. First, It was found that body image were classified 4 factors of care for appearance, concern about weight, effort of appearance improvement. and appearance attractiveness. Second, there were significant differences of body image by demographic characteristics. Third, there were significant differences of BMI, apparel management behavior and weight(figure) control behavior by demographic characteristics. Forth, there were significant differences of body image, apparel management behavior and weight(figure) control behavior by BMI. Fifth, there were partial significant relations of body image, BMI, appearance management behavior and weight(figure) control behavior. Thus, it was found that body image is related to appearance management behavior and weight(figure) control behavior.

Impacts of Mass Media and Personal Factors on Attitudes towards Plastic Surgery and Plastic Surgery Behavior of College Students (대중매체와 개인적 변수가 대학생 소비자의 성형태도 및 성형행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mass media and personal factors on attitudes towards plastic surgery and plastic surgery behavior. For this study the personal factors included concern for appearance, self-esteem, and body satisfaction. Subjects were 472 college students in Ulsan. The results showed that favorable attitudes towards plastic surgery were a little higher than the median, meaning that the respondents had a slightly positive attitude towards plastic surgery, and only 20% of the respondents had had an experience with plastic surgery. A multiple regression analysis was computed and indicated that a more positive attitudes towards plastic surgery was related to high levels of concern for appearance, more time watching TV, a higher household income, and being a female student, in terms of gender. The results of logit analysis indicated that a more positive attitude towards plastic surgery and being a female student related to a higher probability of having had plastic surgery.

The Effects of Vanity and Marital Satisfaction on Clothing Behavior (주부들의 허영심 및 결혼만족도가 의복행동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigates the effects of vanity and marital satisfaction on four aspects of clothing behavior. The data were collected from 258 housewives in Suwon and Seoul, and analyzed using factor analysis, cluster analysis, one-way ANOVA, t-test, multiple regression analysis, and a reliability test. The results of this study were as follows. 1) Three factors of vanity were identified (concern for physical appearance, concern for achievement, and positive view of physical appearance/achievement). Based on these three factors, the respondents were classified into three clusters. 2) Three factors of marital satisfaction were identified (relationship with husband, satisfactory life, and unsatisfactory life). Based on these three factors, the respondents were classified into two clusters. 3) There were significant differences in four aspects of clothing behavior according to the vanity clusters. 4) There was only significant difference in the sex appeal of clothing according to the marital satisfaction clusters. In conclusion, vanity was an important variable to influence fashion, exhibitionism, body improvement, and sex appeal of clothing behavior. The marital satisfaction significantly affected exhibitionism and body improvement for clothing behavior.

The effect of consumers' needs for uniqueness and pursuit of clothing benefit on bespoke suit purchase intention amongst 20~30-year-old males (20~30대 남성 소비자의 독특성 욕구와 의복추구혜택이 비스포크 정장 구매 의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Modern men are much more interested in their appearance than ever before, as well as showing an increased need for uniqueness in order to construct their own sphere and pursue differentiation from others. Besides, changes in life style and the aesthetic sense are causing men to pursue various kinds of clothing benefits so that they want a suit with characteristics beyond the stereotyped design and style. They have started to be actively engaged in clothing purchases, forming a driving force for the growth of the male suit market. Hence, this study has significance in that it offers data conducive to consumers' custom suit purchase by reviewing data on the present condition of the custom suit market and bespoke suits. In addition, it aims to give a summary on the theoretical bases of preceding studies, including the need for uniqueness, pursuit of clothing benefit and concern for the appearance of male consumers, as well as examining the factors that influence on their bespoke suit purchase intentions. Accordingly, this work intends to construct a basic environment for consumers to approach the custom suit market easily and pave the way for male suit markets through offering marketing data and information that is helpful for custom suit-related markets.
