  • This study was designed to identify and compare the consumption value and interest in appearance with regard to the comparison of men's cosmetics purchase decision factors. We conducted a survey among 259 men who have experienced the re-purchase of men's cosmetics. All data was analyzed with the SPSS Windows 17.0 program in terms of frequency, percentage, means, standard deviations, paired-t test, Cronbach $\alpha$, factor analyses, and multiple regression. In summary, three findings emerged from this study. First, men's cosmetics purchase decision factors included two subfactors: product quality factors (price, quality, skin compatibility, fragrance) and image factors (trend, brand image, consciousness of others, diversion). Second, a paired-t test revealed that the consideration toward the image factors of a first time purchase decision was lower than the re-purchase decision factors. However the consideration toward the product quality factors of a first time purchase decision was not different from the re-purchase decision factors. Third, the product quality factors were positively influenced by distinction factors of appearance and functional value. And social value, emotional value, and curiosity value were found to be effective in the image factors at the first time of purchase and re-purchase. Also, the product quality factors of re-purchase decisions were influenced by the satisfaction of the first time purchase. This study will contribute to provide some information for marketers in understanding men's cosmetics purchase decisions and to offer basic data for marketing strategies and product development.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that automatically detects organs having similar appearances in medical images by learning both context and appearance features. Since only the appearance feature is used to learn the classifier in most existing detection methods, detection errors occur when the medical images include multiple organs having similar appearances. In the proposed method, based on the probabilities acquired by the appearance-based classifier, new classifier containing the context feature is created by iteratively learning the characteristics of probability distribution around the interest voxel. Furthermore, both the efficiency and the accuracy are improved through 'region based voting scheme' in test stage. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we detect femur and tibia which have similar appearance from SKI10 knee joint dataset. The proposed method outperformed the detection method only using appearance feature in aspect of overall detection performance.

  • Early researches in human action recognition have focused on tracking and classifying articulated body motions. Such methods required accurate segmentation of body parts, which is a sticky task, particularly under realistic imaging conditions. Recent trends of work have become popular towards the use of more and low-level appearance features such as spatio-temporal interest points. Given the great progress in pose estimation over the past few years, redefined views about pose-based approach are needed. This paper addresses the issues of whether it is sufficient to train a classifier only on low-level appearance features in appearance approach and proposes effective pose-based approach with pose estimation for emotional action recognition. In order for these questions to be solved, we compare the performance of pose-based, appearance-based and its combination-based features respectively with respect to scenario of various emotional action recognition. The experiment results show that pose-based features outperform low-level appearance-based approach of features, even when heavily spoiled by noise, suggesting that pose-based approach with pose estimation is beneficial for the emotional action recognition.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in clothing and body attitude according to demographic variables, and to examine how clothing and body attitude were influenced by social values and demographic variable of adolescents. The questions of 5-point Likert scale were used for the evaluation of clothing attitude, body attitude, and social values. Four dimensions of social values were derived by factor analysis: 'the sense of estrangement', 'the satisfaction with school life', 'materialism', and' the sense of community'. Subjects were 373 adolescent girls in Seoul(182 middle school students and 191 high school students). The data were analyzed by using factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. First, the conformity to entertainers' dresses was influenced by materialism and age(-). Clothing aesthetics was influenced by materialism and allowance, and fashion was influenced by materialism. Second, the interest of plastic surgery was influenced by materialism and allowance. The interest of weight was influenced by the sense of estrangement, school grade(-), the education level of mother, materialism, and the satisfaction with school life. The interest of makeup was influenced by allowance, school grade(-), and the education level of mother(-). Appearance satisfaction was influenced by the sense of estrangement(-) and the satisfaction with school life. The present result means that social values such as materialism and the sense of estrangement are significant variables to understand the appearance attitude of adolescents.
