  • In this study, we used multi-channels ceramic membrane having larger permeate volume per unit time rather than tubular membrane. The hybrid process for advanced drinking water treatment was composed of granular activated carbons (GAC) packing between module inside and outside of multi-channels microfiltration membrane. Instead of natural organic matters (NOM) and fine inorganic particles in natural water source, modified solution was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. Kaolin concentration was fixed at 30mg/L and humic acid was changed as $2{\sim}10\;mg/L$ to inspect effect of organic matters. As a result, both resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) and permeate flux (J) were highly influenced by concentration of humic acid. Also, in result of water-back-flushing period (FT) effect, the shorter FT was the more effective to reduce membrane fouling and to enhance permeate flux because of frequent water-back-flushing. However, the optimal FT condition was 8 min when operating costs were considered. Then, the hybrid process using multi-channels ceramic membrane and GAC was applied to lake water treatment. As a result, average treatment efficiencies in our experiment using the hybrid process were 98.02% for turbidity, 75.64% for $UV_{254}$ absorbance, 7.18% for TDS and 84.73% for $COD_{Mn}$.

  • In this study, the improvement of the operation condition and the water quality in water treatment plant by operating information system(OIS) was evaluated for Ansan water treatment plant. The average flow rate of raw water in the year 2005(after constructing the OIS) appeared 15.6 % lower than that in the year 2004(before constructing the OIS). The mean value(12.37 NTU) of raw water turbidity in the year 2005 remained constant, or nearly so with that(12.06 NTU) in the year 2004. The average dosing rates of coagulant appeared 12.06 mg/L in the year 2005 which was higher than 10.31 mg/L in the year 2004. Furthermore, the average turbidity concentration of fresh water in the year 2005 appcared slightly better than that in the year 2004. From $COD_{Mn}$ and BOD concentration of raw water, the water quality in the year 2005 were better than those in the year 2004. The average concentration of $KMnO_4$ in the year 2004 and the year 2005 was 2.95 mg/L and 1.25 mg/L, respectively, and the average concentration of THMs in the year 2004 and the year 2005 appeared 0.038 mg/L and 0.025 mg/L, respectively. Therefore, the fresh water quality in the year 2005 was better than that in the year 2004. In this study, it is considered that the operation of Ansan water treatment plant may be optimized by OIS, and thus the OIS may be very useful method to improve the water quality.

  • A porous silicate material named as CellCaSi was tested for the removal of microalgae in the water sample from a eutrophic pond. The effects of the CellCaSi on water qualities were investigated on the basis of both the particle size (under 1, 2,and 4 mm) and the added amount (0, 1, 5, and 10 g/l) of the CellCaSi. The removal efficiency of chlorophyll-a was highest at 79% by the addition of 10 g/l of the CellCaSi (under 1 mm) at day 3 after treatment. That is, the removal efficiency of chlorophyll-a by the CellCaSi increased with smaller particle size and more added amount. The dominant species, Chlorella ellipsoidea, was not changed by the addition of the CellCaSi, but the species number and standing crop of the algae diminished. Total nitrogen concentration was not changed much by the addition of the CellCaSi, whereas total phosphorus concentration was reduced. pH and turbidity were not changed by the addition of the CellCaSi, whereas conductivity showed a high correlation with the amount of added CellCaSi ($Y\;=\;29.2 {\cdot}X+306$, $r^2\;=0.984$). Therefore, it seems to be necessary to limit the amount of the CellCaSi under 6.6 g/1 in consideration of a registered maximum conductivity of $500\;{\mu}mhos/cm$ for raw and potable waters.

  • Effect of humic acid (HA), photo-oxidation and adsorption with periodic $N_2$ back-flushing was investigated in hybrid process of ceramic ultrafiltration and photocatalyst for drinking water treatment. It was compared and investigated with the previous result at water back-flushing in viewpoints of membrane fouling resistance ($R_f$), permeate flux (J), and total permeate volume ($V_T$). As decreasing HA, $R_f$ decreased dramatically and J increased, and finally $V_T$ was the highest at HA 2 mg/L. As HA concentration increased from 2 to 10 mg/L, the membrane fouling resistance after 180 mins' operation ($R_{f,180}$) improved 0.8 times more than that of water back-flushing. Therefore, HA concentration should affect on the membrane fouling at $N_2$ back-flushing than water back-flushing. Turbidity treatment efficiencies were almost constant independent of HA concentration, but HA treatment efficiency was the maximum at HA 2 mg/L. This means that adsorption and photo-oxidation of photocatalyst beads could removed HA at HA 2 mg/L, but it was not enough at 4 mg/L. Beyond HA 6 mg/L, UF could effectively treat HA by thick cake layer on membrane surface and severe inner membrane fouling.

  • Conformational changes of allivin, a major allergen protein in garlic, by gamma irradiation were observed. Allium solution (3.0 mg/mL in 0.01 M PBS, pH 7.4) and raw garlic were irradiated in a gamma irradiation facility to be absorbed with doses of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 kGy. After irradiation, a half of irradiated allivin solution was filtered through 0.22 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ filtration kit. UV spectrum and SDS-PAGE were used for observing the conformational changes of allivin by gamma irradiation. Turbidity of allivin solution was increased by optical observation, and the result was validated by the increase of absorbance at 660 m. Turbidity of irradiated and filtered allivin solution significantly (p<0.05) decreased, and the concentration of soluble protein in the solution decreased by increase of the dose. Aggregation among allivin molecules was observed by SDS-PAGE, but irradiated and filtered samples showed decrease of allivin with reducing aggregation trend. SDS-PAGE profiles of irradiated raw garlic were not different. Results indicate that gamma irradiation can decrease the allivin in solution state which may impact on allergenic reaction of garlic.

  • In this research, the mix proportion of the antiwashout underwater concrete with the mineral admixture was evaluated. It can reduce the amount used of the antiwashout admixture (hereinafter referred to as "AWA") and satisfy the properties of concrete. In addition, the review for the difference of the test and practical affairs were conducted. Optimized unit quantity of water of antiwashout underwater concrete and the amount used of AWA was revealed by $190kg/m^3$, 0.9%/W, respectively. In particularly, the mix design is reduced by 5% than the W/B of target strength even though the W and AWA reduced. Therefore, it will have the economical feasibility and qualities including the material separation, resistance characteristic and compressive strength, and etc. The stable value was shown in 1 point of minute passed in the measurement of the turbidity amounts using the turbidimeter after the checker insertion. However, it needs to be reviewed for the interrelationship between turbidity measuring machine and KCI-AD102 standard method. There were no significant differences of compressive strength of specimens in the water depending on the production methods.

  • Three embankments are located in the Chunggye Bay, each named as Changpo, Bokkil and Kuil and environmental changes are expected due to freshwater input. To investigate this phenomenon, three sample sites in front of each embankment gate were selected in Nov. 2006(autumn), Feb. 2007(winter), May. 2007(spring) and Aug. 2007(summer). At every point of embankment spot, large cells(micro-size, >$20\;{\mu}m$) of phytoplankton were turned out to be a major cause of algal bloom in Feb. 2007 and nano-size($2-20\;{\mu}m$) phytoplankton became dominant during rainy season. In rainy season, each point of embankment showed low salinity and transparency with higher ammonium and phosphorus concentrations than dry season. However, the number of phytoplankton has decreased and it is expected that freshwater influx has more influence on high turbidity and radical decrease of salinity than nutrient. According to the results of this study, therefore, nutrient could have more influence on growth of phytoplankton in dry season, but high turbidity and radical changes of salinity have more influence in rainy season.

  • This research was undertaken to do the technical and economical feasibility study of membrane water treatment system. For the technical feasibility study, batch water treatment system using UF(ultrafiltration) was set up and several experiments were carried out. The performance of the UF membrane was tested in terms of turbidity. The experimental results showed that the UF membrane process produced less than 1 NTU water regardless of input water turbidity. For the economical feasibility study, the cost model was analyzed and programmed for simulation. Also costs of the membrane water treatment and the conventional treatment were evaluated. The simulation results showed that the unit production cost increased when design flow or permeate flow decreased. The production cost of membrane water treatment system was lower than that of the conventional system. Both technical and economical feasibility study showed that the UF membrane water purification system was a very competitive water purification process.

  • The present study examines firstly, the inhibition of collagen gelation to explore the possible involvement of $Cu^{++}$-catalyzed peroxidation in rheumatoid arthritis and secondly, the effect of sodium salicylate on this peroxidative reaction to provide a possible explanation for its mechanism of anti-inflammatory action. Incubation of collagen obtained from rat skin with $Cu^{++}$ and $H_2O_2$ resulted in the inhibition of gelation in terms of maximal turbidity and lag phase, but either $Cu^{++}$ or $H_2O_2$ alone essentially gave no effect in the collagen gelation. In the presence of sodium salicylate the inhibited gelation of collagen induced by $Cu^{++}$ and $H_2O_2$ was reversed with the dependency of the concentration of sodium salicylate. Moreover, the rate of $H_2O_2$ decomposition by $Cu^{++}$ was accelerated by sodium salicylate and this decomposition of $H_2O_2$ was found to be saturable in terms of concentration of this drugs. Thus it can be expected that $Cu^{++}$ -catalyzed peroxidation attacks collagen resulting in change of structural or functional integrity of collagen, and sodium salicylate may act on this peroxidative process, possibly through the enhancement of catalatic action of $Cu^{++}$. From these results $Cu^{++}$-catalyzed peroxidation can be in part responsible for degradation of joint tissue in rheumatoid arthritis and sodium salicylate may exert its anti-inflammatory action by this peroxidative reaction.

  • This study was carried out to investigate algal community structures and their correlations with environmental factors on five weir areas in the Nakdong River, South Korea. Water qualities, hydrodynamics, meteorological conditions and algal species compositions were observed in studied sites from May 2010 to Dec. 2013. Results showed that average total phosphorus concentration of 2013 was decreased by 52.4% in comparing with that from 2010 to 2011. Chlorophyll.a concentrations were positive significant with water temperature, pH, total phosphorus and total nitrogen, but is not significant with turbidity and suspended solids. Seasonal successions of algae were observed that Stephanodiscus sp. was dominant species with 65.3% of dominant frequency in studied site. Large algal biomass of the low temperature-adapted diatoms were observed during temperature range of $4{\sim}9^{\circ}C$, but large cyanobacterial biomass mainly during high temperature period ranged from $22^{\circ}C$ to $32^{\circ}C$. Microcystis sp. dominated during high water temperature in summer. The yearly correlations of algal biomass with accumulated solar radiations were not significant but seasonal correlations of summer from June to August were significant with correlation coefficient 0.33 (p<0.05). There were not significant correlations between turbidities and algal biomass. Turbidity and suspended solids concentrations were not significant correlation with algal biomass. According to the results, algal communities had strong correlation with water temperature and had partially correlation with solar radiation. For an effective management of algal blooms, water managers should survey with more long-term monitoring of various environmental factors and algal communities.
