Physicochemical and Functional Properties of Collagen Powder from Skate (Raja Kenojei) Skins (홍어껍질로부터 추출한 콜라겐의 물리화학적 및 기능적 특성)

  • Physicochemical and functional properties of collage from skate skin (Raja Kenojei) are examined depending on pH and NaCl concentration in the medium. The solubility decreased as NaCl concentration increased but, turbidity increased as concentration of collagen increased. Oil-holding capacity and water-holding capacity were similar to other fish skin collagens. Emulsion activity, creaming stability, and viscosity were lowest at where pH levels were isoelectric point regions of collagens. However, the higher pH values at 7.0-9.0 caused increasing foam expansion, foam viscosity, and gel strength. These results indicated that collagen from skate skin could be used as a functional ingredient for food and industrial applications.

Texture and Storage Stability of Tofu Incorporated with Rhynchosia volubilis

  • The effects of Rhynchosia volubilis (yakong) incorporation (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%, w/w of soybeans) on quality and shelf life of tofu were investigated. Moisture content of tofu increased slightly with the increase in the level of yakong incorporation from 10% to 30% and no apparent relationships between yakong incorporation and the yield were found. Turbidity of soybean whey tended to increase with increased level of yakong incorporation where the values of 20% and 30% samples were significantly different from those of control and 10% sample (p<0.05). The different levels of yakong incorporation were found to have significant influence (p<0.05) on all the color characteristics of tofu. Tofu texture varied with the level of yakong incorporation in consistent pattern; however, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in most cases. Tofu incorporated with yakong ($10{\sim}30%$) had a shelf life of above at least 1 day longer than that of the control tofu.

A Study on The Effectiveness of Watertreatment Using Activated Carbons and Membranes (활성탄과 Membrane을 이용한 수처리효과에 관한연구)

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of water treatment using nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration systems, tapwater contaminated by bacteria and nitrate nitrogen was filtered, and then the rates of removal for many kinds of contaminants were comp.ared and investigated. The rates of turbidity removal by these systems are around 80% all of them. However, nanofiltration system is the most effective as hardness removal is 80%, suspended solids 90%, total residual chlorine 90% and nitrate nitrogen 69%. Among nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and microfiltration systems, nanofiltration system is the most stable in flow rate of permeate. Comparing hollow and spiral type of ultrafiltration, microfiltration each, spiral type is more stable than hollow type owing to rinsing effect of brine. The values of pH in ultrafiltration and microfiltration systems are between 7, 0 and 7.5, and that of nanofiltration system is low to 6.2-7.0. The effectiveness of heterotrophic bacteria removal is the most excellent in the nanofiltration system.

Advanced Treatment for Reuse of Oil Refinery Process Wastewater using UF/RO Processes (UF/RO 공정을 이용한 정유공장 방류수의 재활용을 위한 고도처리)

  • Deionized water and wastewater flux were discussed using module set 1-7 composed of ultrafiltration hollow fiber type modules and reverse osmosis spiral wound type modules. The separation characteristics of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membranes were discussed with the variation of applied pressure and temperature. Turbidity and SS were removed effectively from ultrafiltration mem¬brane, and removal efficiency of COD, T-N, and TDS using reverse osmosis membrane was very efficient. Permeate flux increased linearly with the increase of applied pressures and temperature. It was shown that ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membranes were suitable Lo the advanced treatment and reuse of oil refinery process effluent.

해양에서 분리한 Bacillus subtilis SH-1이 분비하는 용균효소의 정제 및 특성

  • The bacteriolytic enzyme produced from Bacillus subtilis SH-1 was purified and characterized, and its molecular weight was determined. The bacteriolytic enzyme activity was increased about 66.5 times via purification with recovery yield of 18.5%. The optimum pH and temperature of this enzyme were 9.0 and 50$\circ$C. The enzyme was stable within a pH range of 6.0-10.0 and unstable above 60 . The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be 23,000 dalton in a form of monomer with no other subunits. Effect of the enzyme on the lysis of bacteria engaged in food posion was tested. The lysis degree was below 31% against Gram negative bacteria and above 48% in Gram positive bacteria. The values higher than 73% were obtained against Vibrio sp. and Listeria sp. As the turbidity of dissolved peptidoglycan clecreases, the free amino group levels were increased. And, based on hydrolysis of casein, this enzyme was thought to be an endopeptidase.

  • The changes of conventional clarification process and an increase in treatment cost are required to meet increasingly stringent regulations related to the treated water quality. Although many enhanced coagulations have introduced to improve organic matter removal, the results to remove color, nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic material have not been very efficient yet. The removal of waste matters such as SS, organic matter, color and turbidity contained in dyeing wastewater was carried out by using the combination of calcium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate. The flocculation was investigated as a function of coagulant dose, pH, mixing time, settling time and coagulant addition modes such as the sequential addition of the two coagulants and the simultaneous addition of them. The flocculation by the combination of calcium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate was compared with that by aluminum sulfate. The mechanism of flocculation was investigated as well. About 84% of color in dyeing watewater was removed by flocculation with combination of calcium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate.

  • It is necessary to implement the management plan for the production of safe and high quality drinking water from lake Paldang. To set up the plan, the water quality items such as BOD, T-P, SS and coliform were monitored for ten years, 1997~2006, and the influence of raw water quality on the drinking water treatment process and the treated water quality was also evaluated from 2004 to 2006. In conclusion, water quality items such as turbidity(SS), T-P(eutrophication), pathogens(fecal coliforms, enterovirus, reovirus, giardia, cryptosporidium), DOC(precursor of disinfection by-products), and micro-pollutants(phthalates, VOCs, heavy metals) are should be managed to get safe and high quality drinking water from lake Paldang.

  • Quantification of sediment losses into the ambient waters associated with various works of coastal developments is highly required for predicting their possible detrimental impacts on the aquatic environments. Although there have been some studies especially related to dredging (e.g., Nakai, 1978; Kirby and Land, 1991; Collins, 1995; Pennekamp et al., 1996; Lorenz, 1999; Jin et al.,2003), none can be regarded as a general guidance up to date, which results from the facts that the amount of sediments released into the ambient waters is influenced by several site/case-specific conditions, and that the existing studies have been carried out using different methods.   • The generation of energy and the cooling of system using thermoelectric semiconductor material have been in spotlight. Thermoelectric effect increases with the decrease of the thermal conductivity. In the thermoelectric devices, thermal conductivity is related to phonon scattering. Therefore, few studies have been conducted in the thermoelectric materials dispersed nano oxide particle for increasing the phonon scattering. However, core-shell structure which nano particle disperses in solvents and then which thermoelectric materials coated on the nano oxide particles has not been reported. In this study, we selected commercial nano powder such as $Al_2O_3$. This nano particle was about 20nm and was crushed aggregate by mechanical treatment. We have developed the effect of the dispersant and the solvent. The properties of particles were evaluated by SEM, TEM, particle size analysis, and BET. Dispersion and dispersion stability were evaluated by electronic microscope and turbidity.

Removal Characteristics of Rainwater Including Non-point Pollutants Using Pre-filter of Wasted-tire and Non-woven Fabric (폐타이어와 부직포를 이용한 프리필터에 의한 비점오염원 포함 우수 처리 특성)

  • Pre-filter system that was consisted of wasted-tire, non-woven fabrics, and sponge was developed as a primary treatment process prior to rainwater reservation or a pre-treatment process of rainwater reuse system for reclamation. By using this system, SS concentration, TOC, COD, and turbidity could decreased by 86.7%, 62.6%, 69.1% and 66.5%, respectively. From the results of particle size distribution of treated water, the particles over than $30{\mu}m$ of diameter were completely removed by pre-filter system. But 90% of particles less than $20{\mu}m$ of diameter were passed through pre-filter. Optimal depth of wasted-tire and non-woven fabrics were 15cm and 2.4cm, respectively. Pre-filter system was considered as an effective alternative for pre-treatment of rainwater including non-point pollutants and it could be also applied for the treatment of combined sewer overflow (CSO).
