  • Indonesia is known as the largest oil palm producer in the world. However, along with the production, it generates wastes and pollution that caused the environmental problem in surrounding areas. Previous researchers reported that the high palm oil mill effluent (POME) concentration inhibited microalgae growth. However, the inhibition factor was not clearly explained by using kinetic model. This study presents kinetic models of Botryococcus braunii (B. braunii) cultivated on POME wastewater under different turbidity condition. Results showed that the growth model of Zwietering was closely suitable with experimental results. It was found that B. braunii was able to consume organic carbon from the POME wastewater on the logarithmic model. A modified kinetic model of Monod Haldane described the influence of turbidity and chemical oxygen demand on the cultivation. Turbidity of POME medium inhibited the growth rate at KI 3.578 and KII 179.472 NTU, respectively. The Lipid (39.9%), and carbohydrate (41.03%) were found in the biomass that could be utilized as biofuel source.

  • A method to improve water treatment efficiency by coagulant overdosing for high pH raw water at a drinking water treatment plant (WTP) which had no pH adjusting facilities was investigated. Poly aluminum chloride (PACl) was used for coagulant, and turbidity removal efficiency was evaluated as a function of PACl dosage increases. pH and turbidity of supernatant of jar-tester were 7.10 and 0.50 NTU respectively, when the turbidity, pH, alkalinity, water temperature, conductivity of raw water were 1.75 NTU, 9.38, 46.5 mg/L, $6.4^{\circ}C$, $400{\mu}s/cm$, respectively. Turbidity of settled water was reduced from 2.18 NTU to 0.28 NTU (87% reduction) when PACl dosage was increased from 16 mg/L to 45 mg/L at a full scale WTP. This can be attributed to the recovery of coagulant efficiency by pH reduction with the increase of coagulant dose, however coagulation efficiency was reduced with the formation of Al(OH)4- by PACl addition at higher pH. Coagulant overdosing was proven to be a rapid and effective method for high pH raw water, which can be applied at drinking WTP.

  • The determining the appropriate dosage of coagulant is very important, because dosage of coagulant in the coagulation process for wastewater affects removing the amount of pollutants, cost, and producing sludge amount. Accordingly, in this study, in order to determine the optimal PAC dosage in the coagulation process, CCD (Central composite design) was used to proceed experimental design, and the quadratic regression models were constructed between independent variables (pH, influent turbidity, PAC dosage) and each response variable (Total coliform, E.coli, PSD (Particle size distribution) (< $10{\mu}m$), TP, $PO_4$-P, and $COD_{cr}$) by the RSM (Response surface methodology). Also, Considering the various response variables, the optimum PAC dosage and range were derived. As a result, in order to maximize the removal rate of total coliform and E.coli, the values of independent variables are the pH 6-7, the influent turbidity 100-200 NTU, and the PAC dosage 0.07-0.09 ml/L. For maximizing the removal rate of TP, $PO_4$-P, $COD_{cr}$, and PSD(< $10{\mu}m$), it is required for the pH 9, the influent turbidity 200-250 NTU, and the PAC dosage 0.05-0.065 ml/L. In the case of multiple independent variables, when the desirable removal rate for total coliform, E.coli, TP, and $PO_4$-P is 90-100 % and that for $COD_{cr}$ and PSD(< $10{\mu}m$) is 50-100 %, the required PAC dosage is 0.05-0.07 ml/L in the pH 9 and influent turbidity 200-250 NTU. Thus, if the influent turbidity is high, adjusting pH is more effective way in terms of cost since a small amount of PAC dosage is required.

  • Present study aims to investigate the effect of muddy water on the gill and the kidney tissues of Zacco koreanus under high turbidity rearing condition. The gill of Z. koreanus showed abnormal shapes in its secondary lamellae and a rough surface with impure debris in the high level of turbidity and the longer raising period condition. In addition, the gills showed the edema, the exfoliation of epithelial cell, and the fusion of the secondary lamellae. In case of kidney tissue, the atrophied glomerulus was observed, and the empty space in Bowman's capsule was wider. The SOD activities in both gill and kidney tissues were increased in proportion to the high level of turbidity. On the while, CAT and GPX activities were shown constant level in the gill, but were increased in the kidney in the high turbid muddy water. These results indicate that the harmful radicals which generate by high level of turbidity could be removed partly by antioxidant enzymes in the kidney. The concentrations of micro heavy metal ions accumulated in the gill increased drastically at the 1,000 NTU. Based on the above results, it is considered that the exposure to the high level of turbidity for long period may affect on the structures of tissues, and change the enzymatic balance in Z. koreanus, causing the fatal disease.

  • A PCF(Pore Controllable Fiber Filter) process was applied as a pretreatment of water treatment for reduction of turbidity. The experimental results obtained from the PCF showed that the removal efficiency of turbidity without coagulation was around over 70 percent. However, the removal efficiency of turbidity by the coagulation-PCF process was high as much as over 95%. Thus, the coagulation pretreatment was required for the better operation of the PCF. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) images of fiber before and after filtration showed that the filtration mechanism of PCF filter is both controlling attachment mechanism and Sieving mechanism through fiber pore. For the coagulation-PCF process, optimum dosage of coagulant was needed for the economical operation, and for this, determining the optimum dosage by using a filter column test. Also only 16mg/L of alum was used to obtain high algae removal efficiency over 90%. Therefore, it can be concluded that coagulation-PCF process is very effective pretreatment process for algae removal.

  • The changing patterns of water temperature and turbidity in streams entering Imha Reservoir were studied. The turbidity variation near the intake tower in Imha Reservoir was investigated in relation with the variation of water temperature and turbidity in streams. Water temperature was estimated using multi-regression method with air temperature and dew point as independent variables. Peak turbidity was also estimated using non-linear regression method with rainfall intensity as an independent variable. Although more independent variables representing watershed characteristics seem to be needed to increase estimation accuracies, the methodology used in this study can be applied to estimate water temperature and peak turbidity in other streams.

  • Small scale D-water treatment plant(WTP) where has slow sand filtration was using raw water containing high concentration of manganese (> 2mg/l). The raw water was pre-chlorinated for oxidation of manganese and resulted in difficulty for filtration. Thus, sometimes manganese concentration and turbidity were over the water quality standard. Two stage rapid manganese sand filtration pilot plant which can treat $200m^3/d$ was operated to solve manganese problem in D-WTP. The removal rate of manganese and turbidity were about 38% and 84%, respectively without pH control of raw water. However, when pH of raw water was controlled to average 7.9 with NaOH solution, the removal rate of manganese and turbidity increased to 95.0% and 95.5%, respectively and the water quality of filtrate satisfied the water quality standard. Manganese content in sand was over 0.3mg/g which is Japan Water Association Guideline. The content in upper filter was 5~10 times more than that of middle and lower during an early operation but the content in middle and lower filter was increased more and more with increase of operation time. This result means that the oxidized manganese was adsorbed well in sand. Rapid manganese sand filter was backwashed periodically. The water quality of backwash wastewater was improved by sedimentation. Thus, turbidity and manganese concentration decreased from 29.4NTU to 3.09NTU and from 1.7mg/L to 0.26mg/L, respectively for one day. In Jar test of backwash wastewater with PAC(Poly-aluminum chloride), optimum dosage was 30mg/L. Because the turbidity of filtrate was high as 0.76NTU for early 5 minute after backwash, filter-to-waste should be used after backwash to prevent poor quality water.

  • The increased turbidity in rivers during flood events has various effects on water environmental management, including drinking water supply systems. Thus, prediction of turbid water is essential for water environmental management. Recently, various advanced machine learning algorithms have been increasingly used in water environmental management. Ensemble machine learning algorithms such as random forest (RF) and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) are some of the most popular machine learning algorithms used for water environmental management, along with deep learning algorithms such as recurrent neural networks. In this study GBDT, an ensemble machine learning algorithm, and gated recurrent unit (GRU), a recurrent neural networks algorithm, are used for model development to predict turbidity in a river. The observation frequencies of input data used for the model were 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 120 and 168 h. The root-mean-square error-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR) of GRU and GBDT ranges between 0.182~0.766 and 0.400~0.683, respectively. Both models show similar prediction accuracy with RSR of 0.682 for GRU and 0.683 for GBDT. The GRU shows better prediction accuracy when the observation frequency is relatively short (i.e., 2, 4, and 8 h) where GBDT shows better prediction accuracy when the observation frequency is relatively long (i.e. 48, 120, 160 h). The results suggest that the characteristics of input data should be considered to develop an appropriate model to predict turbidity.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the coagulation characteristics of the completely mixed chamber for wastewater treatment. The completely mixed chamber system was composed of the reservoirs, the three-stage mixing and coagulation part with propeller impeller, the injection parts of coagulants, a sedimentation tank and a control panel. Wastewater sample of pH 8.5 and initial turbidity 1,000NTU was prepared using sludge taken from a tunneling work site. The efficiency of turbidity removal with increasing the dosage of coagulant aids increased by about 99%. Increasing coagulant above the optimal dosage, however, the efficiency of turbidity removal decreased.
