  • A particular optical receiver has its own optical receiver modes (ORMs) determined by its optical and electrical filters. Superposing the ORM waveforms at the transmitter, we can generate a new type of optical signals, called ORM signals. After optical detection, they produce pre-specified voltage waveforms accurately, which is advantageous for digital signal processing. Assuming a Gaussian optical receiver, where the optical and electrical filters are Gaussian, we illustrate various phase-shift keying ORM signals using two ORMs by changing their relative phase. We also illustrate multi-level ORM signal patterns using two or more ORMs.

  • An optical receiver using a CMOS-compatible avalanche photodetector (CMOS-APD) is demonstrated. The CMOS-APD is fabricated with $0.18{\mu}m$ standard CMOS technology and the optical receiver is implemented by using the CMOS-APD and a transimpedance amplifier on a board. The optical receiver can detect 6.25-Gb/s data with the help of the series inductive peaking effect.

  • Two protocols inclouding the receiver collision avoidance function are proposed for high-speed optical fiber LANs with finite users. The basic idea to avoid receiver collision is the grouping of destination nodes by the number of channels and it is accomplished in the architecture with or without one separate control channel. While the protocol with a control channel requires a tunable optical transmitter, a fixed optical transmitter and two fixed optical receiver, the other protocol requires a tunable optical transmitter and one fixed optical receiver. The performance of two receiver collision avoidance protocols is computed and analyzed under various system parameters. The numerical results show that the receiver collision avoidance protocol has better performance for a small load than the protocol without receiver collision avoidance.

  • In this paper, we design optical receiver composed of CDR(clock and data recovery), SA(sense amp), TIA(transimpe dence amplifier), and decision circuit. The optical receiver can be classified to two main block, one is Deserializer composed of CDR and SA, another is PD receiver composed of preamplifier(샴), peak detector, etc. In this paper, we propose CDR using delayed data topology that could improve defects of existing CDR. The optical receiver that is proposed in this paper has the role of translation a 1.25 Gb/s optical signal to $10{\times}125 Mb/s$ array electric signals. This optical receiver is verified by simulator(hspice) using 0.35 um CMOS technology.

  • This paper describes a 150-Mb/s monolithic optical receiver for plastic optical fiber link using a standard CMOS technology. The receiver integrates a photodiode using an N-well/P-substrate junction, a pre amplifier, a post amplifier, and an output driver. The size, PN-junction type, and the number of metal fingers of the photodiode are optimized to meet the link requirements. The N-well/P-substrate photodiode has a 200-${\mu}m$ by 200-${\mu}m$ optical window, 0.1-A/W responsivity, 7.6-pF junction capacitance and 113-MHz bandwidth. The monolithic receiver can successfully convert 150-Mb/s optical signal into digital data through up to 30-m plastic optical fiber link with -10.4 dBm of optical sensitivity. The receiver occupies 0.56-$mm^2$ area including electrostatic discharge protection diodes and bonding pads. To reduce unnecessary power consumption when the light is not over threshold or not modulating, a simple light detector and a signal detector are introduced. In active mode, the receiver core consumes 5.8-mA DC currents at 150-Mb/s data rate from a single 3.3 V supply, while consumes only $120{\mu}W$ in the sleep mode.

  • In this paper, a transimpedance optical receiver based on PIN/P-HEMT with cascoded input stage and inductor peaking technique was designed for several giga bits optical communication. Analysis of the receiver shows that cascoded input stage with inductor peaking increase bandwidth without sacrificing low frequence gain. The receiver achieved a low noise characteristic and maximally flat frequence response. It is shown that the 3-dB bandwidth of the designed receiver is 8.3 ㎓ and input equivalent noise current is as low as 16pA/√Hz to 10㎓.

  • A power-adjustable fully-integrated CMOS optical receiver with multi-rate clock-and-data recovery circuit is presented in standard 65-nm CMOS technology. With supply voltage scaling, key features of the optical receiver such as bandwidth, power efficiency, and optical sensitivity can be automatically optimized according to the bit rates. The prototype receiver has −23.7 dBm to −15.4 dBm of optical sensitivity for 10−9 bit error rate with constant conversion gain around all target bit rates from 1.62Gbps to 8.1 Gbps. Power efficiency is less than 9.3 pJ/bit over all operating ranges.

  • We propose a novel, tiny optical receiver engine utilizing an all-in-one package based on embedded optics technology. The package's best transmission S21 and reflection S22 opto-electric (OE) bandwidths are 49.8 GHz and 34.9 GHz, respectively, and the reflectance of the optical engine is below -31.7 dB for all channels. The engine satisfies the MIL-STD-883G standard for reliability tests, such as mechanical and thermal shock, and vibration resistance. The sensitivity after 10 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission is below -8 dBm. The optical receiver engine is cost-competitive and applicable for 400G coarse wavelength division multiplexing 4 (CWDM4) 10 km optical transceivers.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a production flow for 155Mbps transmitter/receiver optical modules. Compact optical module packages for use as 155Mbps optical interfaces are developed by implementing a self-alignment principle for the formation of V-grooves and solder bumps. on the bases of experimental results of two hundreds of receiver/transmitter optical modules, each steps and flows of our production are developed by production efficiencies.
