  • Larix kaemferi is now a major economic kind of trees and is produced in large quantity every year. Thus, the study of Larix kaemferiis conducted to acquire the basic date of measures for the reasonable use, clarifying the relation with the compression strength parallel to grain according to anatomical properties by heartwood and sapwood, and earlywood and latewood. As the length of an earlywood tracheid and the radial wall thickness of earlywood and latewood tracheids increased, the compression strength rose, and as the height of uniseriate ray in cell number increased, the compression strength parallel to grain fell. The major anatomical factors effecting on the compression strength parallel to grain of heart wood were the radial wall thickness of a latewood tracheid and the length of a latewood tracheid, while in sapwood, the length of an earlywood tracheid and the radial wall thickness of earlywood and latewood tracheids were the major factor on it.

  • Ginkgo trees have long been planted in Korea as roadside trees and ornamental trees, but the wood was seldom used except some utilization for small artifacts. Soaring prices of imported wood and future uncertainty about long-term supply of foreign woods have stimulated research on value-added utilization of less-utilized domestic wood resources such as Ginkgo wood. The properties of Ginkgo wood were investigated to determine its utilization potential in this study, and the results of anatomical, physical, and mechanical studies were presented with chemical compositions.

  • 1) The greater parts of rail road cross tie wood in Korea have been supplied by the imported woods from foreign countries such as Formosa (Taiwan) and Japan. However on account of anatomical properties on these imported woods are not known when newly imported, identification and preservative treatment are apt to fail. Accordingly this expriment was accomplished by the need of application of anatomical properties for the preservative treatment and identification of several imported woods. 2) In this study macroscopical and microscopical properties were inspected and briefly described about four species (Cyclobalanopsis gilva Blume, Castanopsis longicaudata K. et H., Machilus longiflora Hay and Schima superba Gard et Champ) from Formosa and one (Fagus crenata, Blume) from Japan. With several native species these are important as the rail road tie wood in Korea. 3) According to the results measured values of the vessels and fibers of each tested species are as following table.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the mechanical behavior in bending and the anatomical changes of wood under several deflection rates. Sample specimens of water-saturated Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) were stressed to rupture under several deflection rates. Mechanical properties of wood such as modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and stress at proportional limit, and anatomical changes affected by deflection rates were estimated. Microscopic observations on compression side of the test specimens when the specimen was loaded to rupture were carried out by the SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results are summarized as follows: 1. The mechanical properties of wood were affected by variations of the deflection rates. The modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and stress at proportional limit were in proportion to the logarithm of deflection rates. 2. The deflection of wood at rupture in bending increased as deflection rates decreased. 3. The variations of the microscopic deformations of sample specimens were closely related to the deflection of wood at rupture. In case of largely deflected wood by maximum bending load, severe and abundant microscopic deformations were observed.

  • Muna teakwood, especially from old stands, has been popular as raw material for timber industries in Indonesia for the past ten decades. Due to the scarcity of this wood, superior-grown seedlings of Muna teakwood have been developed and widely planted. Since there is no information on its characteristics, therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate wood characteristics of the 8-year-old superior-grown teak from Muna Island to ensure their proper utilization as raw material for wooden furniture. Wood discs and boards from basal area of three different trees were used as the samples. Macroscopic and microscopic anatomical characteristics were observed following the IAWA's list, while their physical-mechanical properties were measured following British Standard 373-57. Results showed that anatomical characteristics of this wood sample are similar to regular teakwood, but its heartwood portion is higher. Differences among trees are found in regards to wood texture, growth ring width, as well as early and latewood portion. The green moisture content was lower than that of fast-growing teak of a similar age. The wood is more stable than the old teakwood, but its specific gravity is lower. In general, mechanical properties of this wood were higher than those of the regular fast-growing teakwood, but lower than the old one. Based on its specific gravity, this superior Muna teakwood was categorized as a Strength Class of III. The wood is suitable enough for wooden furniture manufacturing.

  • The anatomical and physical properties of tension wood (TW), opposite wood (OW) and lateral wood (LW) in the branches of Korean paulownia (Paulownia coreana) were compared. The diameter of TW vessels was larger than that of OW and LW vessels. The most distinctive feature of TW fibers was the presence of a gelatinous layer (G-fiber). The cell wall of TW fibers was nearly three times as thick as that of OW and LW. TW differed from OW and LW in density, X-ray diffraction pattern and shear and compressive strengths. The results obtained in this study showed clear differences in the anatomical and physical properties of TW, OW and LW of Paulownia coreana branch woods.

  • Larix kaempferi is a tree with a major economic impact and is processed in large quantity every year in Korea. This study was carried out to collect basic data for the reasonable use of Larix kaempferi and to investigate the relation between anatomical properties and modulus of rupture (MOR) for heartwood and sapwood. As the length of earlywood tracheid and the radial wall thickness of earlywood tracheid and latewood tracheid increased, the modulus of rupture (MOR) increased, but decreased with increasing microfibril angle. Statistical analysis by the stepwise regression technique shows that the main factors affecting the modulus of rupture (MOR) of heartwood are the microfibril angle and the radial wall thickness of latewood tracheid, while those affecting MOR of sapwood are the length of earlywood tracheid and the microfibril angle.

  • Persimmon wood (Diospyros kaki) is a seasonal fruit-producing plant with a beautiful dark pattern in its wood that is suitable for high-quality furniture, sculptures and musical instruments. The utilization of persimmon wood can be improved by determining its anatomical characteristics, such as juvenile and mature wood. This study aimed to determine the boundaries between juvenile and mature wood and observe the anatomical properties of juvenile and mature wood and their variations in the axial direction. Three 30-year-old persimmon (D. kaki) trees grown in Karo, North Sumatra, Indonesia, were used in this study. The boundary between juvenile and mature wood was determined by measuring the fiber length and vessel element length from near the pith to near the bark. Anatomical observations were conducted in the juvenile and mature wood areas. The results showed that the average boundaries between juvenile and mature wood were 44.11 mm from the pith and were not significantly different in the axial direction of the trees. Furthermore, the wood anatomy categories of juvenile and mature wood differed significantly in terms of fiber diameter, fiber proportion, vessel proportion, and axial parenchyma proportion. In the axial direction, vessel diameter, ray parenchyma frequency, and ray parenchyma proportion at the base, middle, and top of the tree were significantly different.

  • 1. The physical and anatomical properties investigated in this study are the ones, which may give more effect on absorption of preservatives, such as variation of annual ring, specific gravity, shrinkage, E.M.C. of desorption and adsorption at 70 percent relative humidity condition, general and minute properties of wood. 2. On this study, the positive effects of wood structure, in particular, the appearances of tyloses in vessel element upon the absorption of creosote were observed. 3. Thirteen percent sodium chloride solution treatment and boiling hot water treatment have shown poor results to improve the preservative absorption characteristics of tested species however, some slight difference between treated and control could be seen. (see Tables 6 and 7).
