  • Illite has been known to adsorb Cs preferentially to other alkali cations, especially at lower Cs concentration due to the frayed edge site. This frayed edge site was only verified by isotherm experiments, but not by other analytical methods. To investigate the Cs sorption properties on the surface of illite, artificially weathered illite with increasing frayed edge sites was reacted with Cs at different solution concentrations. The illite was weathered f3r 1 hour, 2 days, 14 days in 0.001 M HCl solution. With increasing reaction time, increasing amount of K in solution was observed, indicating formation of frayed edges by weathering, which was also verified by XRD, SEM, and TEM analysis. Original and weathered illites were converted to the homoionic Na form and reacted with $10^{-3}$ / ~ $10^{-7}$ M CsCl solutions for 24 hour. The aspect of Cs sorption was clearly distinguished around $10^{-5}$ M Cs concentration. The relative Cs amount sorbed on illite at low concentration (<10$^{-5}$ M) was higher than high concentration and increased with decreasing Cs concentration. In general, the amount of sorbed Cs increases with increasing weathering time and this trend is more noticeable at lower concentration while not much differentiated with weathering time at high concentration. These results indicate that the selective Cs sorption site exists in illite at low concentration, known as frayed edge site, and the number of those sites increases with weathering time.

GLC method and amino acid autoanalyzer were applied. respectively. while the general composition of the seed and physico-chemical properties of the seed oil were also determined by A. O. A. C. method. The results obtained were summarized as follow The content of oil, protein and ashes were 47.05%, 20.14% and 3.1%, respectively. The content of sulfur and cyan compound in the seed were 0.02% and 0.00005%, respectively, which were far below than allowed guantity by food regulation. Therefore, it is considered to be safe for edible purpose. The iodine absorption number obtained was 145.2, which might be belonged to drying oil. The physico-chemical properties of the seed oil such as acid value, saponification number and refractive index showed the characteristics of an unsaturated high molecular fatty acid compound. The seed oil was composed of 34.8% of oleic acid, 25.1% of linoleic acid and 26.1% of linolenic acid, which accounts for more than 80% of essential fatty acid. Therefore, it could be used as an edible oil. Seventeen kinds of amino acids were anayzed from seed protein. Among them comparatively high content of threonine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine and phenylalanine were observed. As a non-essential amino acid, glutamic acid was found as high as 4.985%. From these results the seed of thornless Chinese pepper would be good for oil and protein source.

  • A research projects is currently being conducted to develop a nonlinear finite element analysis methods for predicting the structural behavior of reinforced concrete frame structures, exposed to fire. As part of this, reinforced concrete frames subjected to fire loads were analyzed using the nonlinear finite-element program DIANA. Two numerical steps are incorporated in this program. The first step carries out the nonlinear transient heat flow analysis associated with fire and the second step predicts the structural behavior of reinforced concrete frames subjected to the thermal histories predicted by first step. The complex features of structural behavior in fire conditions, such as thermal expansion, plasticity, cracking or crushing, and material properties changing with temperature are considered. A concrete material model based on nonlinear fracture mechanics to take cracking into account and plasticity models for concrete in compression and reinforcement steel were used. The material and analytical models developed in this paper are verified against the experimental data on simple reinforced concrete beams. The changes in thermal parameters are discussed from the point of view of changes of structure and chemical composition due to the high temperature exposure. Although, this study considers codes standard fire for reinforced concrete frame, any other time-temperature relationship can be easily incorporated.

  • In this paper, damage detection procedure using the finite element model updating was formulated and applied to a small-scale frame structure. FE model updating is the analytical method which finds the mathematical model that generates the measured dynamic properties similarly, and can be effectively used for the damage detection and SHM. For model updating, several kinds of dynamic properties, such as the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and frequency response functions, can be used as the inputs. In this paper, two kinds of model updating procedures using the natrual frequency and the frequency response function, and the natrual frequency and the mode shapes, respectively, were applied to identify the location and the severity of damage of the test structure, which is a four-story two bay steel structure. Results from the damage detection showed that more accurate identification results was obtained when the natrual frequency and the frequency response function were used than when the natrual frequency and the mode shapes were used.

  • Saponins have been considered as promising natural substances for mitigating methane emissions from ruminants. However, studies reported that addition of saponin-rich sources often arrived at contrasting results, i.e. either it decreased methane or it did not. The aim of the present study was to assess ruminal methane emissions through a meta-analytical approach of integrating related studies from published papers which described various levels of different saponin-rich sources being added to ruminant feed. A database was constructed from published literature reporting the addition of saponin-rich sources at various levels and then monitoring ruminal methane emissions in vitro. Accordingly, levels of saponin-rich source additions as well as different saponin sources were specified in the database. Apart from methane, other related rumen fermentation parameters were also included in the database, i.e. organic matter digestibility, gas production, pH, ammonia concentration, short-chain fatty acid profiles and protozoal count. A total of 23 studies comprised of 89 data points met the inclusion criteria. The data obtained were subsequently subjected to a statistical meta-analysis based on mixed model methodology. Accordingly, different studies were treated as random effects whereas levels of saponin-rich source additions or different saponin sources were considered as fixed effects. Model statistics used were p-value and root mean square error. Results showed that an addition of increasing levels of a saponin-rich source decreased methane emission per unit of substrate incubated as well as per unit of total gas produced (p<0.05). There was a decrease in acetate proportion (linear pattern; p<0.001) and an increase in propionate proportion (linear pattern; p<0.001) with increasing levels of saponin. Log protozoal count decreased (p<0.05) at higher saponin levels. Comparing between different saponin-rich sources, all saponin sources, i.e. quillaja, tea and yucca saponins produced less methane per unit of total gas than that of control (p<0.05). Although numerically the order of effectiveness of saponin-rich sources in mitigating methane was yucca>tea>quillaja, statistically they did not differ each other. It can be concluded that methane mitigating properties of saponins in the rumen are level- and source-dependent.

  • Kaolinite [$Al_2Si_2O_5(OH)_4$] used in these experiments was synthesized at 250$^{\circ}C$ for 36 hrs by a hydrothermal process from amorphous $Al(OH)_3$ and $SiO_2$. The change of the mineralogical properties of the phase synthesized were observed in the pH range 2 to 9. The synthetic kaolinite were characterized by the analytical methods of XRD, IR, DIA, and FE-SEM. Kaolinite was obtained in a wide range of pH. The phases with high- to midium- defect kaolinite with high thermal stability were obtained from the acidic conditions and high-defect kaolinite with low thermal stability from the basic conditions. These variations of kaolinite properties appears to be related to the pH dependence of kaolinite surface speciation. The peaks intensity and resolution of the kaolinite decrease according to the alkalinity of the solution by the results of the IR testing. And the peak intensity increases in the 60 to 70$^{\circ}C$ range due to dehydration reaction observed by TG-DTA. Such phenomena was the result of increase of unreacted amorphous materials in the high pH condition, which could be identified by FE-SEM.

  • Top synthetic spin valves with structure Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe(P1)/Ru/CoFe(P2)/FeMn/Ta on Si(100) substrate with natural oxide were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering system, and investigated on the magnetoresistance properties and effective exchange bias field. As the thickness of FeMn increased above 150 $\AA$, MR ratio was decreased due to the current shunting effect. As the thickness of free layer decreased below 40$\AA$, MR ratio was reduced rapidly. In case of 40 $\AA$ thick of free layer, spin valve film with a structure Si(100)/Ta(50 $\AA$)/NiFe(27 $\AA$)/CoFe(13 $\AA$)/Cu(26 $\AA$)/CoFe(30 $\AA$)/Ru(7 $\AA$)/CoFe(15 $\AA$)/FeMn(100 $\AA$)/Ta(50 $\AA$) exhibited maximum MR ratio of 7.5 % and an effective exchange bias field of 600 Oe, respectively. Thickness difference dependence in this synthetic spin valve structure on effective exchange field was investigated and interpreted by the analytical method. It should be noted that thickness increase of CoFe(P 1) and decrease of CoFe(P2) in synthetic antiferromagnet leaded to the decrease in effective exchange bias field by experimentally and analytically.

  • This study was carried out to examine the quality properties of honey in Korean commercial markets. The moisture content, stable carbon isotope ratio, invert sugar, cane sugar, and hydroxy-methylfurfural (HMF) contents of honey were measured according to the Korea Food Code and AOAC's (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) official methods. The stable carbon isotope ratio ranged from -25.18‰ to -12.60‰, which clearly differed between honey of $C_3$ origin (flower) and $C_4$ origin (artificial). Results of quality measurements revealed a moisture content of 18.12 to 19.70%, fructose content of 36.10 to 43.94%, glucose content of 22.61 to 31.91%, sucrose content of 1.56 to 4.75%, invert sugar content of 64.89 to 72.79%, and HMF content of 4.10 to 78.66 mg/kg. These values demonstrate that the quality of the tested honey meets the standard criteria of the Korean Food Code and Codex. However, it is necessary to reconsider the appropriate criteria for imported honey because it is circulated in the market through a long distribution process.

  • A self-administered questionnaire survey and face-to-face interviews were conducted on 150 local residents belonging to seven villages, 160 visitors and 86 experts in order to analyze the attitudes of groups of local residents, visitors as well as experts toward the development plan of Sobaeksan Jarak-gil. Reliability analysis and one-way ANOVA were performed on the data collected by a questionnaire survey using IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 after coding. The Duncan Test was conducted as a post-hoc test. Based on the analytical results, in economic terms, the expert group expected an increase in income, improvement in living standards and increase in expenditure for the maintenance of local infrastructure. In environmental terms, the visitor group was highly concerned about the disruption of the local natural environment and ecosystem, destruction of local properties and landscape, increase in water/soil/air pollution and increase in solid waste and noise. In social and cultural terms, the expert group had higher expectation for excavation of traditional cultural properties, instillation of local patriotism and pride, and the visitor group was highly concerned about a rise in crime, destruction of indigenous culture/increase in imitations, and induction of conflicts between residents. It is estimated that these results will be used as basic data for establishing the development plan of the mountainous ecological trail reflecting opinions of various groups.
