  • Natural hydraulic lime (NHL) is produced by burning a form of low-grade limestone containing silica and alumina which, above certain temperatures, combine with calcium oxide. The resulting silicates and aluminates impart hydraulic properties to the product. This study aims to determine the calcined characteristics of NHL using domestic low-grade limestone with maximized hydraulic properties. Six types of low-grade limestone containing $SiO_2$ were selected and experiments were carried out with different burning temperatures and holding times. The burning temperature and holding time as the most suitable burning conditions were $1,200^{\circ}C$ to $1,300^{\circ}C$ and 3 to 7 h, respectively, for the manufacturing of NHL from domestic low-grade limestone. These results demonstrate the feasibility of NHL using domestic low-grade limestone to produce NHL.

  • Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG) powders were prepared by precipitation of Y hydroxides during milling of alumina powders. The powder calcined at 1200$^{\circ}C$ for 4 h contained a small amount of Yttrium Aluminum Monoclinic (YAM) in addition to YAG. However, phase-pure YAG was obtained in the compact of the milled powder with an average particle size of 0.57 ${\mu}$m at 1300$^{\circ}C$, which is much lower than those (l500∼1600$^{\circ}C$) for a mixed oxide method. The powder was found to exhibit an excellent sinterability regardless of the addition of a sintering aid, SiO$_2$(350 ppm Si). The undoped sample were sintered to a relative density of 98% at l600$^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the addition of SiO$_2$ caused a considerable densification to occur at 1500$^{\circ}C$ and the relative density reached 97.7%. But the sintering aid had little effect on the densification at 1600$^{\circ}C$, showing a similar relative density to the undoped sample.

  • As an ozone gas sensor, the semiconductor gas sensor which is cheap, portable and simple in use and has a high sensitivity and an excellent selectivity, has been known as an alternative. In the present study, ITO ($In_2O_3 95%,\;SnO_2$ 5%) thin films were deposited on the alumina substrate by using R.F. magnetron sputtering method. The substrate temperature was 300$^{\circ}C$ and 500$^{\circ}C$, respectively and then some specimens were annealed at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 4h in air. ITO gas-sensing films formed crystallines before and after annealing. As results of gas sensitivity measurements to an ozone gas, the sensor deposited at 300$^{\circ}C$ and then annealed has the highest sensitivity (sensible below 1 ppm). As the operating temperature increased gradually, the sensitivity decreased but the response time and stability improved.

  • For the lower-temperature preparation of calcium monoaluminate(CA, C:CaO, A:$Al_2O_3$) clinker which is hard to synthesize purely within its melting point, an equimolar hydrate was obtained and then used as a starting raw material of clinker burning. The hydrate was prepared from a mixture of waste oyster shell and industrial aluminium hydroxide by heating to $1200^{\circ}C$, grinding and mixing with water. The hydrate was composed of amorphous aluminium hydroxide and $C_3AH_6$(H:$H_2O$) formed by resolution-precipitation mechanism of the system C-A-H. By heating the hydrate, nearly pure and porous calcium monoaluminate clinker was formed at $1400^{\circ}C$ which is fairly lower temperature than that of its melting point. The formation of calcium monoaluminate was performed mainly by the reaction between amorphous alumina and $C_{12}A_7$ caused by the decomposition of $C_3AH_6$. The immediate and earlier formation of $C_{12}A_7$ seemed to be accelerated by not only high surface area and instability of the thermally decomposed hydrate but also the catalytic effect of water decomposed from the hydrate. The final calcium monoaluminate clinker was very porous because of the influence of highly porous shape of the thermally decomposed hydrate.

  • This paper aims to recycle red mud from a byproduct in the alumina industry as an alternative raw material for depleted natural resources. In order to apply red mud as a ceramic material, red mud ceramics were prepared according to mixing and temperature in a laboratory environment. Compared with KS L 4201 in terms of compression ratios and absorptions, it is found that two kinds of conditions for one type and three conditions for two types meet the standard. When red mud is used as a clay brick raw material, the substitution ratio of red mud is 10% or less, and the firing temperature is considered to be appropriate at $1200^{\circ}C$. In order to apply red mud to clay brick raw material in actual field, various samples and firing temperature should be considered in the future.

  • The ceramic microfiltration system with periodic $N_2$-back-flushing was operated for treating paper wastewater discharged from a company making toilet papers by recycling milk or juice cartons. Two kinds of alumina membranes with 7 channels used here for recycling paper wastewater. The optimal filtration time interval for HC04 membrane with $0.4{\mu}m$ pore size was lower value of 4 min than 16 min for HC10 with $1.0{\mu}m$ pore size at fixed back-flushing time 40 sec, trans-membrane pressure $1.0kg_f/cm^2$ and back-flushing pressure $5.0kg_f/cm^2$. From the results of TMP effect at fixed filtration time interval and back-flushing time, the lower TMP was better on membrane fouling because high TMP could make easily membrane cake and fouling inside membrane structure. However, we could acquire the highest volume of total permeate at the highest TMP for the reason that TMP was driving force in our filtration system to treat paper wastewater. Then the permeate water of low turbidity was acquired in our microfiltration system using multi channels ceramic membranes, and the treated water could be reused in paper process.

  • High temperature electrical conductivity of Aluminum Nitride (AlN) ceramics sintered with $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid has been investigated with respect to various sintering conditions and MgO-dopant. When magnesium oxide is added as a dopant, liquid glass-film and crystalline phases such as spinel, perovskite are formed as second phases, which affects their electrical properties. According to high temperature impedance analysis, MgO doping leads to reduction of activation energy and electrical resistivity due to AlN grains. On the other hand, the activation energy and electrical resistivity due to grain boundary were increased by MgO doping. This is a result of the formation of liquid glass film in the grain boundary, which contains Mg ions, or the elevation of schottky barrier due to the precipitation of Mg in the grain boundary. For the annealed sample of MgO doped AlN, the electrical resistivity and activation energy were increased further compared to MgO doped AlN, which results from diffusion of Mg in the grains from grain boundary as shown in the microstructure.

  • High thermal conductivity films with electrically insulating properties have a great potential for the effective heat transfer as substrate and thermal interface materials in high density and high power electronic packages. There have been lots of studies to achieve high thermal conductivity composites using high thermal conductivity fillers such alumina, aluminum nitride, boron nitride, CNT and graphene, recently. Among them, hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) nano-sheet is a promising candidate for high thermal conductivity with electrically insulating filler material. This work presents an enhanced heat transfer properties of ceramic/polymer composite films using h-BN nano-sheets and PVA polymer resins. The h-BN nano-sheets were prepared by a mechanical exfoliation of h-BN flakes using organic media and subsequent ultrasonic treatment. High thermal conductivities over $2.8W/m{\cdot}K$ for transverse and $10W/m{\cdot}K$ for in-plane direction of the cast films were achieved for casted h-BN/PVA composite films. Further improvement of thermal conductivity up to $13.5W/m{\cdot}K$ at in-plane mode was achieved by applying uniaxial compression at the temperature above glass transition of PVA to enhance the alignment of the h-BN nano-sheets.

  • The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the biological stability of the zirconia/alumina composite abutment by histologic and radiographic examination in clinical cases. 17 partially edentulous patients (5 men and 12 women, mean age 47) were treated with 37 implants. The implants were placed following the standard two-stage protocol. After a healing period of 3 to 6 months, zirconia/alumina composite abutments were connected. All radiographs were taken using paralleling technique with individually fabricated impression bite block, following insertion of the prosthesis and at the 3-, 6-, 12 month re-examinations. After processing the obtained images, the osseous level was calculated using the digital image in the mesial and distal aspect in each implant. An ANOVA and t-test were used to test for difference between the baseline and 3-, 6-, 12 months re-examinations, and for difference between maxilla and mandible. Differences at P <0.05 were considered statistically significant. For histologic examination, sample was obtained from the palatal gingiva which implant functioned for 12 months. Sections were examined under a light microscope under various magnifications. Clinically, no abutment fracture or crack as well as periimplantitis was observed during the period of study. The mean bone level reduction(${\pm}standard$ deviation) was 0.34 rom(${\pm}\;0.26$) at 3-months, 0.4 2mm(${\pm}\;0.30$) at 6-months, 0.62 mm(${\pm}\;0.28$) at 12-months respectively. No statistically significant difference was found between baseline and 3-, 6-, 12-months re-examinations (p > 0.05). The mean bone level reduction in maxilla was 0.33(${\pm}0.25$) at 3-months, 0.36(${\pm}0.33$) at 6-months, 0.56(${\pm}0.26$) at 12-months. And the mean bone level reduction in mandible was 0.35(${\pm}0.27$) at 3-months, 0,49(${\pm}0.27$) at 6-months, 0.68(${\pm}0.30$) at 12-months. No statistical difference in bone level reduction between implants placed in the maxilla and mandible. Histologically, the height of the junctional epithelium was about 2.09 mm. And the width was about 0.51 mm. Scattered fibroblasts and inflammatory cells, and dense collagen network with few vascular structures characterized the portion of connective tissue. The inflammatory cell infiltration was observed just beneath the apical end of junctional epithelium and the area of direct in contact with zirconia/alumina abutment. These results suggest the zirconia/alumina composite abutment can be used in variable intraoral condition, in posterior segment as well as anterior segment without adverse effects.

  • Recently, low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology has gained a remarkable application potential in sensors, actuators and microsystems fields. In this study, we investigated the effects of annealing treatment on the electrical properties of $Pb(ZrTi)O_3$ (PZT) thin films deposited on LTCC substrate. The LTCC substrates with thickness of 400 ${\mu}m$ were fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The PZT thin films were deposited on Au/LTCC substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method. Then, the change of the crystallization of the films was investigated under various annealing temperatures. The results showed that the crystallization of the films were enhanced as increasing annealing temperatures. The film, annealed at $700^{\circ}C$, 3min, was well crystallized in the ferovskite structure. The structural variation of the films were analyzed by using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and field emmision scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).
