  • The investigation was conducted to find out amounts and ratios of N, P and K fertilizers applied on summer Chinese cabbage in 58 farmers' fields of highland area. The application levels of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, livestock manure and lime fertilizers were 444, 188, 390, 9,920 and $2,160kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, for summer Chinese cabbage. The ratios of basal dressing were 48% in N, 46.6% in $K_2O$. The frequencies of top dressing both N and K were 1.7 times. The kinds of compound fertilizers were in the order of 11-10-10+3+0.3 > 11-6-6+4+13+17 > 12-9-11+3+0.3 in basal application and 18-0-18+0.3 > 13-0-13+1+0.3 > 18-0-15+0.3 in top dressing. From the surveyed results, we could estimate that total 4,347 tons of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$ fertilizers were over used for summer Chinese cabbage by farmers in highland.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes of soil properties for potato and Chinese cabbage after application adding phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in the mounded highland soil from 1999 to 2001. Experimental plots were designed with control(NPK+Lime+Compost) and chemical improvement(Control+Application adding P and K). Mounded soil before field experiment of first year(1999) was low in organic matter, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium, and the soil texture was loamy sand soil. After 3 years, the contents of soil organic matter increased a little, and available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium contents were remarkably increased. The crop growth in chemical improvement plot was better than control plot. Yield of chemical improvement plot in comparison with control plot was increased by 5~22% for potato and 6~25% for Chinese cabbage after 2~3 years.

  • This work aims to select the potentially vulnerable plant species against climate change at alpine and subalpine belts of Mts. Sorak, Jiri, and Halla, from central, southern, southern insular high mountains of the Korean Peninsula, respectively. The selection of global warming related vulnerable plants were performed by adapting various criteria, such as flora, endemicity, rarity, floristically specific and valuable species, species composition at mountain summits, horizontal and vertical ranges of individual species, and their distributional pattern in the Korean Peninsula. Line and quadrat field surveys along the major trails from all directions at height above 1,500 meters above sea level of Mts, Sorak, Jiri and Halla were conducted each year during spring, summer, and autumn from 2010 to 2011. Based upon above mentioned eight criteria, high level of climate change related potentially vulnerable arboral plants, such as Rhododendron aureum, Taxus caespitosa, Pinus pumila, Oplopanax elatus, Vaccinium uliginosum, and Thuja koraiensis are noticed from at subalpine belt of Mt. Sorak. Species of Abies koreana, Rhododendron tschonoskii, Oplopanax elatus, Taxus cuspidata, Picea jezoensis, and Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii belong to climate change concerned vulnerable species at subalpine belt of Mt. Jiri. High level of climate change related species vulnerability is found at alpine and subalpine belts of Mt. Halla from Diapensia lapponica var. obovata, Salix blinii, Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum, Vaccinium uliginosum, Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii, Taxus cuspidata, Rhamnus taquetii, Abies koreana, Hugeria japonica, Prunus buergeriana, and Berberis amurensis var. quelpartensis. Countermeasures to save the global warming vulnerable plants in situ are required.

  • A field experiment was conducted during the growing season of 1985 to determine the effects of slope orientation, north and south facing exposures and three different altitudes, 800, 1,000 and 1,200m a.s.1. on the dry matter yield, forage quality and botanical composition of alpine pasture. 1. Total dry matter yield of alpine pasture was influenced by slope orientation and altitude. An average forage yield of both exposures at 1,000m a.s.1. was 9,301kg/ha compared with 10,274kg/ha at 800m a.s.1. and the productivity express in relative percentage decreased by 9.5% per 200m attitudinal increase. 2. An average forage yield of both altitudes, 800 and 1,000m a.s.1. on the south facing exposure was 21.5% higher than that on the north exposure. 3. Crude protein concentration of forage grown on both exposures was lowest at 800m a.s.1. increasing gradually as the altitude increased, but crude fiber concentration decreaced in a manner opposite to that of crude protein. 4. Forage grown on the north facing exposure had a higher concentration of crude protein than that grown on the south facing exposure at the same altitude, but lower concentraion of crude fiber. 5. Orchardgrass and timothy were two main species on both exposures at 800m a.s.1. but timothy was only dominant species at 1,000 and 1,200m a.s.1. and performed well up to 1,200m a.s.1. in alpine area. The economic production limit of orchardgrass would be about 800m a.s.1. in the alpine pasture. 6. No soil property differences were found between the north and south facing exposures as well as three different altitudes in the alpine pasture. It seemed that the previous pasture fertilization of the experimental field completely overshadowed any soil property differences from slope orientation and altitude.

  • Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) recently became a single worst insect which is not controlled effectively by organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides in Kangwon alpine croplands. The objective of this study was to determine if diamondback moth has developed a resistance to organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. Resistance of diamondback moth, collected at Keichon, Jangpyong Taebaek, Chunchon, and Hongchon, was determined by the concentration required to kill fifty percent of population, $LC_{50}$. Their response of resistance varied to insecticides and locations: Taebaek populations were 35 and 70 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than susceptible(S) population. Hongchon populations were 94 and 254 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than S population. In addition, Chunchon populations were 37 and 19 times more resistant to profenofos and benfuracarb, respectively, than S population. However, the field populations did not differ in resistance to diazinon, phenthoate, flupyrazofos, carbofuran, and furathiocarb. This study show that field populations of diamondback moth found in Kangwon alpine vegetable croplands have developed a resistance and/or multiple resistance to some insecticides, implying that farmers are losing organophosphorus and carbamate insecticide options for selective control in vegetable crops.

  • The stable isotopes ratios ($\delta^{13}C\;and\;\delta^{15}N$) of two coexisting species of zooplankton (Daphnia longispina and Acanthodiaptomus pacificus) and POM were determined in two alpine lakes in Japan. The difference of $\delta^{13}C$ between A. pacificus and D. longispina was 4.1$\pm$0.9‰ in Lake Shirakoma, which was larger than in Lake Panke. Whereas the difference of $\delta^{15}N$ between A. pacificus and D. longispina (2.6$\pm$0.8‰) was larger in Lake Panke than in Lake Shirakoma. $\delta^{13}C$ of POM (-26.6$\pm$1.2‰) in Lake Shirakoma was different from those of zooplankton; it was heavier than those of D. longispina and A. pacificus by 3.7$\pm$1.6‰ and 7.8$\pm$1.0‰, respectively. Whereas $\delta^{15}N$ of POM (2.0$\pm$0.8‰) was similar with those of both A. pacificus and D. longispina. This implies that the two lakes may have different trophic structure and food sources for zooplankton, and each species are grazing on selectively different components of POM. The temporal variation of $\delta^{13}C$ for each zooplankton species was associated with lipid contents of zooplankton in both lakes. The results showed that stable isotope composition of zooplankton can be an useful information for understanding energy pathways and trophic structures in lakes.

  • It has been well known that soil erosion and sediments from alpine agricultural fields are causing severe water quality and turbidity problems in receiving waters. Also these result in the loss of money because farmers have to buy top soils to provide enough root zone in the following year. Thus, there have been needs to reduce soil erosion and sediment discharge into the stream networks. To accomplish this end, an effective erosion control plans should be developed based on scientific research, not by rule of thumb. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been widely used to estimate the soil erosion in many countries over the years. In this study, the USLE was used to estimate soil erosion potential under different cropping scenarios in HongCheon County, Kangwon. The soil erosion potential for continuous corn cropping was the highest compared with those from continuous potato find average cropping scenarios. This indicates the soil erosion plans need to be established considering cropping system in the field. The Unit Stream Power Erosion-Deposition (USPED) was applied for HongCheon County to estimate soil erosion and deposition areas. The USPED estimated results can be used to complement USLE results in developing effective erosion control plans.
